With better music than Mega Man II (NES) It's the top of the pile in my book. Nothing comes close. Quick Man's stage music, Crash Man's, and the first level of Doctor Wily's castle... all stone cold classics. I'd not played Mega Man II until recently, and the music is the star of the show, in an already pretty damn fine game.

Not NES, but the Sonic The Hedgehog games on the Master System had some brilliant tracks.

I would say Ys Book I & II, but neither the graphics nor the sound were 8-bit.

So, I'll say... The Guardian Legend.
