It's that the background music is becoming synthetic beats and hip-hop "boom boom clap" rhythms. It doesn't even sound like real instruments anymore. And I remember when every song on a Coldplay album was good. And if you like Princess of China, you're obviously not a longtime Coldplay fan. They're obviously trying to grab a new audience, and apparently it's working. Oh well, we'll always have their first three albums.
Every song on this album is driven by piano/synths, guitar, drums and bass. And I've been a Coldplay fan since Parachutes. I happen to think Princess of China is a great song. So...I'm confused.
Same here. I own all of their albums and have listened to them enough to sing along to all of their songs. And I STILL think Princess of China is a catchy song. Coldplay is just changing, and it's up to their audience to decide whether or not to catch up with them.
I will say that I too noticed that some of their instruments don't sound like real instruments this time around. The thing is, I realized that Coldplay makes artificial instruments, for once, sound REALLY GOOD!
I don't understand how people can write off MX as a desperate attempt to get into pop music. Hurts Like Heaven, Charlie Brown, Don't Let It Break Your Heart, Up with the Birds. What is it about songs like these that make them sound like anything you've heard in pop music? In a more general sense, practically ALL of the songs on the album sound unique and original.
Where are the "pulsating club beats" that everyone seems keen to mention? How does a song like "Paradise" get grouped together with low-rate pop music, simply because it has a pounding bass and a little bit of repetition?
I understand that "Princess of China" was an interesting direction for the band to take, but when you listen to it, it really isn't that bad. A popular singer from this generation singing with the glorious Coldplay? Oh noes! Yeah, it sounds different, but that doesn't mean it sounds awful. You are free to disagree, but it'd be great if people didn't hate it because of who's singing.
As for the transition songs, I personally find them to be very enjoyable. Of course they're not supposed to be listened to on their own, but they add a good amount of atmosphere for the next song, so I've never had a reason to skip them.
People are always saying that Coldplay needs to "get back to their roots" and start playing like they did for "Parachutes" and "AROBTTH." While I think that would be wonderful indeed, I still don't spite Coldplay's new sound. The band is changing drastically, and I'd have to say they're pulling it off with flying colors. One of the true essences of Coldplay lies in their cryptic lyrics. Every song they sing has SOME kind of meaning, but they almost never flat-out say what it is. Listen to MX again and you'll see that this hasn't changed. In "Paradise," Chris sings the phrase "Life goes on, it gets so heavy/The wheel breaks the butterfly." What the heck does that mean? I have no idea, but I'm sure it's hiding something (although some are free to disagree).
My point is: Yeah, Coldplay has changed. But they're still the same band they've always been, and their hearts are in their music. I fully support the direction they are going, and I refuse to just write them off as a generic pop music wannabe.
I couldn't agree more with this statement.
Oh, and as for the line in Paradise, "Life goes on it gets so heavy/ The wheel breaks the butterfly," I think he's talking about how life has got him (or her, the girl he constantly refers to in Paradise) down and disappointed him. Life gets "heavy" because it is bringing him/her down. The "wheel" could be referring to a circle, ie the Circle of Life, and it breaks the "butterfly" (the representation of his/her dreams or paradise, hence the symbol of the song being a butterfly). Make sense now?

That DOES make sense! Lyrics like these prove to me that Coldplay's still got it. Thanks!

Did anyone see Chris Martin on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night? He is so darn nice it's impossible not to love him. Coldplay will perform on Saturday Night Live tonight, so be sure to watch!
Also, I've listened to Mylo Xyloto a little more and my initial judgment was off. This album is a ton better than Viva la Vida in my opinion. Some of the songs I said were forgettable are anything but. Up With the Birds grows on me the more I listen to it. The second half of the song is brilliant and the beginning leads up to it nicely. Paradise has been stuck in my head a lot as well. I'm also a big fan of Hurts Like Heaven, Charlie Brown, Major Minus, and Every Teardrop is a Waterfall. Some of the other ones are pretty good as well. All in all, I'd say this is a pretty solid album. A lot more to my liking than Viva la Vida. (But I still don't want Rihanna in my Coldplay.)

Good to hear you're starting to the beauty in the album. I'll be honest here: When I first bought the album on the 24th and had just uploaded it to my iTunes, I was pretty skeptical about it. None of the songs except Paradise and Major Minus caught my attention (not even Charlie Brown; that song took me about 5 plays for it to get stuck in my head), and I especially thought the second half of the song was boring. However, the more you listen to the entire album, it begins to grow on you, and I eventually began to actually CHOOSE to play songs like U.F.O. and Up In Flames (which are great songs, but had judged to be the worst on the album when I initially bought the album).
As for Mylo Xyloto being better than Viva La Vida, I don't really know, as they're both beautifully crafted pieces of art where each and every track is great (with the exception of M.M.I.X. on Mylo. I really don't see any point in that track).

Viva la Vida is by far my least favorite Coldplay album. It just didn't feel like Coldplay to me, especially coming after the beautiful X&Y. But I'm not saying it's bad, it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Chris Martin was on Howard Stern last week talking and playing songs on his piano. He said "Paradise" was actually written for the winner of a show like American Idol to sing after they won. He wouldn't say which show. He said that once he wrote it he told them they couldn't have it, it was too good.

That's really interesting. I didn't know that.
Coldplay was awesome on SNL last night. They rocked the house with Paradise and Every Teardrop is a Waterfall and even appeared in two sketches.
