I don't know if there's already a Coldplay fan thread, but here you can discuss their new album, Mylo Xyloto.

I personally find the songs "Paradise" and "Charlie Brown" to be my favorites from their 5th release, and "Hurts Like Heaven", "Major Minus", and "Every Teardrop is A Waterfall" are also really good. Pretty much the whole album is really good imo, and I would even say its my favorite Coldplay album so far, and it just gets better the more I listen to the songs.

If you haven't listened to Coldplay or their new album, I suggest you listen to them on Youtube. RIGHT NOW.

Yes. Yes. Yes! Yes! YES!
Nice to see another Coldplay fan around here! I bought their album the day it came out.
I definitely gotta agree with your favorites. 'cept I find that I listen to "Major Minus" the least. =/

My favorites happen to be "Hurts Like Heaven," "Paradise," "Us Against the World," "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall," and "Up with the Birds."

The entire album is fantastic though!

X&Y is the best.

Why do people point to their wrists when asking for the time, but don't point to their crotch when they ask where the bathroom is?

I really enjoy this album. I know a lot of people say it's bad because it's nothing like their previous albums - I've never cared about someone's "sound" as long as their material stays great. I wasn't a huge fan of X&Y as there were only a couple of songs I really enjoyed - Viva la Vida and Prospekt's March were good and enjoyable but Mylo Xyloto is my favourite of theirs so far. I even bought the vinyl. :3

I enjoy all of their albums immensely. A Rush of Blood to the Head still stands as my favorite.

In terms of Coldplay getting a "New Sound" for Mylo Xyloto, I always thought that that was the case for all of their albums. Each one has a distinct sound to it that sets it apart from the others. Thus, Mylo Xyloto fits right in!

@Oddy: For whatever reason, Coldplay is not allowing streaming of their album on certain websites, so it's difficult finding a video that plays the entire CD. There isn't really a youtube video that has all of the songs listed as a playlist, but users are starting to upload individual videos with quality sound of them. Here's the tracklist, if you want to look any of them up.

1/2. Mylo Xyloto/Hurts Like Heaven
3. Paradise
4. Charlie Brown
5. Us Against the World
6/7. M.M.I.X/Every Teardrop is a Waterfall
8. Major Minus
9. U.F.O
10. Princess of China
11. Up in Flames
12/13. A Hopeful Transmission/Don't Let It Break Your Heart
14. Up with the Birds

And in response to the lyrics of "Viva la Vida" (album), I don't think they are meaningless garbage. I will agree that some songs are incredibly vague and borderline pretentious, but there is still meaning deeply rooted within them. Plus, the listener can draw out whatever meaning he or she wants to, so it doesn't really matter!

Glad to hear that others on this site are enjoying the album as well. I was worried that this thread would go straight to the end of the forum list because of the popularity of the other General Discussion threads haha.

And I've been reading some reviews on the new album and it's sad to say that many reviewers have been trashing it. Such a shame when it's such a quality album.

Oh, and has anyone realized/read that the whole album is actually a large love story that encompasses the two fictional characters "Mylo" and "Xyloto" (hence the album's name)? I thought that detail was pretty cool, as it adds a whole new layer of depth to an already deep album.

I've been a huge Coldplay fan for many years now. I'd have to say Viva La Vida is my least favorite album but I like what I've heard from the new album. Especially Charlie Brown. That guitar just sounds so awesome. Mylo Xyloto is the bands first concept album, with the theme being a love story.

Oh well if reviewers have been trashing it. Reviewers usually don't know what they're talking about. If you like it, who cares.

I think a lot of critics totally missed the point when reviewing this one.

Would it be safe to assume you are a Radiohead fan based on your name?

Also, I read your review. I don't have the album so I can't agree one way or the other, though I liked your take. With that said, you didn't like Warning Sign? And I think that Major Minus sounds pretty dark. Just my thoughts. I cringed when you said Coldplay is now a pop band. Whether or not that is true, I wish they would go back to their more alternative rock roots. Rihanna? Come on. Back in the days of A Rush of Blood to the Head and X and Y, I would have said Coldplay was my favorite band. I still like them a lot, but they kind of lost me on Viva La Vida.

Oh yes, they're my favorite band. Besides High Speed and Twisted Logic, I've never thought Coldplay was the Radiohead rip-off a lot of people make them out to be. And with Mylo Xyloto, they're definitely doing their own thing now.

As for Warning Sign: meh. The end of the song is great, but I still think it's pretty weak considering the strength of the b-sides. And if you didn't like Viva, chances are you won't like this one. It's even more poppy and colorful.

Yeah, I never thought they were a rip-off either. I don't think a band could copy Radiohead if they tried.
Well, I liked some songs on Viva, so I'll probably like some of the songs on Mylo. Charlie Brown is awesome.

Fantastic review. I agree on a lot of your points concerning the album.

I may have a few things to argue about with your view of the band as a whole, but to each his own on that one. From one Coldplay fan to another, I say cheers!

Much appreciated It's funny, for a band whose music is often deemed "samey," there's so many differing opinions on what Coldplay "is," and what their best era is. Not a lot of bands these days even have eras.

Excellent, excellent review! I agree with almost everything said about the album, especially how the songs get more addicting the more you listen to them and are far more meaningful when in the context of their actual location on the album. I could argue that yes, Coldplay HAS written some dark songs (Violet Hill, Death and All His Friends, Up In Flames to name a few), though they aren't as dark as songs from grunge bands such as say, Smashing Pumpkins. However, to each his own and I'll let you voice your opinion on that subject. I'm just happy that we both can agree that it's a spectacular album.
