Wrote about it on my blog. Love it
I think a lot of critics totally missed the point when reviewing this one.

Coldplay HAS written some dark songs (Violet Hill, Death and All His Friends, Up In Flames to name a few)...

Strange, I always thought Death and All His Friends gave off sort of an uplifting, inspirational vibe. Interesting!

Yeah that was my take on Death and all his Friends as well--sort of uplifting call to arms.

^Both great songs. I love how Amsterdam builds up to such an awesome ending. My favorite Coldplay song always changes. I really like Moses, See You Soon, Charlie Brown, and Shiver along with so many others. Really the first three albums were my favorite.

Oh, and Don't Panic. How could I forget about Don't Panic?

Such a tough call. Death and All His Friends and Strawberry Swing are probably my favorites, but Hurts Like Heaven and Up With the Birds are climbing their way up as well. Shiver, Don't Panic, Sparks, God Put a Smile Upon Your Face, Daylight, Speed of Sound...all great as well.

Hard to decide on a favorite... I think I'll just list my favorites from each album.:

Parachutes:

  • Don't Panic (Really chill song.)
  • Shiver (The intro riff and overall sound of the song are really catchy.)
  • Yellow (A really beautiful and affectionate song.)

A Rush of Blood to the Head: (The only album I don't have all the songs to)

  • The Scientist (A really sad song that I can relate to.)

X & Y:

  • Fix You (The buildup to the last chorus is phenomenal and bone-chilling.)
  • Talk (The first song that really hooked me on Coldplay.)
  • The Hardest Part (An ironically uplifting and beautiful song. My personal fave on X&Y. I can just feel the love and care given to the song.)

Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends:

  • Lovers In Japan (Love the oriental sound; really makes it unique. My personal fave on the album. Was my anthem when I went to Japan earlier this year.)
  • Violet Hill (An epic and sorrowful war song.)
  • Death and All His Friends (This one really made me shiver the first time I listened to it. The part of the song where he says "I don't wanna follow Death and all of his friends" is just phenomenal. By far their best closing song. Also love the way it ends with the same riff as "Life in Technicolor", the album's opening track.)

Mylo Xyloto:

  • Paradise (Immediately fell in love with its use of ambient sounds and orchestral strings. Makes me feel like I'm flying.)
  • Charlie Brown (Reminds me of my childhood for some reason, and by far the album's catchiest song.)
  • Major Minus (Love the angry sound of it and the awesome bass part.)

I think it's safe to say I love pretty much all of Coldplay's songs.

Just gave Death and All His Friends another listen and I agree, it's not very dark, but rather mysterious and kinda bone-chilling in the way that it's very moving. Cemeteries of London, however, is kind of dark imo. Clearly it's talking about spirits. Or zombies.

I listened to all the MX songs in order and overall I'd say it's another disappointing album from Coldplay, and that's coming from a seasoned Coldplay fan. I can think of five of the fourteen songs that I like and the other nine range from the utterly forgettable (Up in Flames, Up with the Birds) to the unbearable (Princess of China). Seriously, Princess of China is so bad that when I heard Rihanna start singing I had to stop the song the first time I listened to it. And three of the songs aren't even songs; they're just 40 seconds of nothing. So there's really 11 songs. And I couldn't make out any kind of story from listening to the songs in order, but that may be because I don't know a lot of the lyrics to the songs.

It seems like Coldplay used to be an original band and now they are just trying to "fit in" with today's pop crap. What's next, Chris Martin is going to start auto tuning his voice? How about a duet with Justin Bieber? They lost the style that made so many people Coldplay fans to begin with. After listening to these songs I went back and listened to songs from their older albums and there is no comparison; the old songs blow the new ones away. Coldplay is still one of my favorite bands, but I'm not sure how much more of their new stuff I can take.

If you think that Coldplay used to be an original band, I must say I think you're sorely mistaken. The New York TImes described them as "the most insufferable band of the decade" when X&Y released, and the general consensus around critics was that they were Radiohead-lite. Even Chris Martin joked once that they were the Diet Coke of Radiohead.

I'm not saying that they were any of these things--I've made it clear that I love their early stuff--but Coldplay were never a revolutionary band. I wonder what it is you think Coldplay is doing on this album to "fit in" with modern pop bands. They've always been a successful pop band from day one. Yellow, Clocks, and Speed of Sound were all wildly successful singles. And it's funny you mention it, because Chris Martin does use Auto Tune in Hurts Like Heaven, and most would agree it's one of the strongest tracks on the album.

MX is hugely disappointing. I loved how colourful Viva La Vida is, but MX is just overproduced trash with weak acoustic songs mixed in. Club pounding and hip hop beats? Not in my Coldplay please. Charlie Brown feels like a VLV outtake, which would explain why it's the strongest track on there (Martin has mentioned in interviews it was actually a leftover from that era).

If you dig the new style or still somehow find yourself emotionally invested in these songs, good on you. I'm just glad Coldplay isn't one of the half dozen bands that I listen to like back when I got into music, so I have other choices. Better luck next time, Coldplay, and thanks for creating two modern pop rock masterpieces (AROBTTH and VLV).

It's been a pretty disappointing music year for me, thank god for Antlers, Arctic Monkeys and Florence. And looking forward to Black Keys.

I don't understand how people can write off MX as a desperate attempt to get into pop music.
Hurts Like Heaven, Charlie Brown, Don't Let It Break Your Heart, Up with the Birds. What is it about songs like these that make them sound like anything you've heard in pop music? In a more general sense, practically ALL of the songs on the album sound unique and original.

Where are the "pulsating club beats" that everyone seems keen to mention? How does a song like "Paradise" get grouped together with low-rate pop music, simply because it has a pounding bass and a little bit of repetition?

I understand that "Princess of China" was an interesting direction for the band to take, but when you listen to it, it really isn't that bad. A popular singer from this generation singing with the glorious Coldplay? Oh noes! Yeah, it sounds different, but that doesn't mean it sounds awful. You are free to disagree, but it'd be great if people didn't hate it because of who's singing.

As for the transition songs, I personally find them to be very enjoyable. Of course they're not supposed to be listened to on their own, but they add a good amount of atmosphere for the next song, so I've never had a reason to skip them.

People are always saying that Coldplay needs to "get back to their roots" and start playing like they did for "Parachutes" and "AROBTTH." While I think that would be wonderful indeed, I still don't spite Coldplay's new sound. The band is changing drastically, and I'd have to say they're pulling it off with flying colors. One of the true essences of Coldplay lies in their cryptic lyrics. Every song they sing has SOME kind of meaning, but they almost never flat-out say what it is. Listen to MX again and you'll see that this hasn't changed. In "Paradise," Chris sings the phrase "Life goes on, it gets so heavy/The wheel breaks the butterfly." What the heck does that mean? I have no idea, but I'm sure it's hiding something (although some are free to disagree).

My point is: Yeah, Coldplay has changed. But they're still the same band they've always been, and their hearts are in their music. I fully support the direction they are going, and I refuse to just write them off as a generic pop music wannabe.

I think my favorite song out of the whole album is Princess of China, Rihanna was the best in the whole song! I can't stop listening to the song. Anyone who says they can't believe they have Rihanna in the song and she ruined it needs to go rethink their lives and FAST!

It's that the background music is becoming synthetic beats and hip-hop "boom boom clap" rhythms. It doesn't even sound like real instruments anymore. And I remember when every song on a Coldplay album was good. And if you like Princess of China, you're obviously not a longtime Coldplay fan. They're obviously trying to grab a new audience, and apparently it's working. Oh well, we'll always have their first three albums.

Every song on this album is driven by piano/synths, guitar, drums and bass. And I've been a Coldplay fan since Parachutes. I happen to think Princess of China is a great song. So...I'm confused.

Lol samehere. But for me it doesn't matter to me if the song sounds good I will listen to it and support the song and this song is better than Clocks or Viva La Vida. And also this song is what happened to me and this is what I want to tell him.

All I can say is, compare these songs with their older material. I don't know how else to elaborate. I just feel abandoned as a Coldplay fan.

While I do agree that Coldplay is aiming for a younger, hippier and autotuned audience I think that Mylo Xyloto is quite a revolutionary album in many ways. I think Princess Of China is the best and most catchy out of all the songs on the new album.

Of course Clocks will always be my favorite as it is what made and defined me as a Coldplay fan via the Peter Pan Motion Picture soundtrack. I also love the sounds in Parachutes and Viva La Vida Death and all His Friends
