Been continuing my annual October horror movie watchlist, here are a few notable examples,

The Howling 2: Your sister is a Werewolf (1985)- I’ve seen the first Howling a couple times, and finally got around to the sequel. Oh man, is it gloriously bad in the best possible way. Worth checking out for the scene with Christopher Lee trying to be incognito at a punk show.

Arachnophobia (1990)- Hadn’t seen this one in years, really holds up. Much like Tremors it’s a horror comedy that treats the monster as a serious threat which I really appreciate. Always loved John Goodman’s exterminator character in this.

The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025)- I’ve never really liked this series, and this one is no exception. It’s basically a series of the exact same jump scare, person wandering darkened hallway, then BOO! scary old lady!! This type of horror has never been effective in scaring me, as you can see it coming a mile away. Also there’s just a lot of overdone cgi. I will say that there was some nice camera work, and some interesting stuff done with mirrors, but still didn’t save the movie for me.

Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)- I was initially skeptical of this one, it seemed odd that they’d try and stretch out that one chapter of the Dracula novel into a feature length movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. Really excellent production value, and some great performances. It’s a similar kinda pot boiler horror film to John Carpenter’s The Thing, i.e. a bunch of characters trapped in an isolated setting slowing realizing their growing peril as they’re picked off one by one. Really loved how bestial and savage Dracula was portrayed in this.

Train to Busan (2016)- This was a rather excellent zombie movie. They really take full advantage of the premise of a zombie outbreak on a train. Some really intense, gripping sequences, with a cast of likeable, (and unlikeable), characters. I will say the movie does kinda lay on the melodrama rather thick, especially towards the latter half of the film. And while well acted, it was a bit much for me. I generally prefer my zombie movies to lean more towards the fun side, and not the, I’m going to be depressed for a week side of things. That’s just my preference though.

My brother and I watched The Blob (1958) this weekend! We have both been scared of it since we were kids (long story short, we over heard our grandma talking about it when we were little and were terrified), but we finally got over that fear haha! It was kinda corny, and of course the effects weren't all that azing compared to modern films, but it was still very enjoyable! The story rushed along way too quickly, with character arcs just doing total 180s at times, but it was still a fun little movie to finally check off the list. And hey, I no longer run screaming out of dark rooms because I'm scared the Bob is gonna get me (that's what I called it as a kid)

@seinfeldfanatic love Ernest scared stupid. I was so happy I found our old DVD copy while digging through boxes at my parent's place the other month. Definitely the best Ernest movie, and a good gateway horror film for kids.

Looking for movies I've never seen before, I DVR'd Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, and Price of Darkness by John Carpenter.

I'm glad I went into Prince of Darkness blind. It was kinda unique. I was entertained with both movies.

@WoomyNNYes yeah, prince of darkness is an underrated classic. That grainy camcorder footage of the devil in the church doorway is one of the creepiest images in horror films.

If you're in the mood for some more Carpenter check out, in the mouth of madness. It won't disappoint!

I watched the Masters of the Universe movie again last night and I still get goose bumps when he shouts "I have the power" during the final battle with Skeletor.

Been watching Twice Upon a Time (1983)...from...Archive (dot) Org. I remember watching on telly back in 1997 when I first moved to Virginia from Delaware on Cartoon Network when they did that Cartoon Theater back then. Now...this is the strane & unique part...it has two dubs. The PG-13 & the kid-friendly dialogues. Luckily the DVD by Warner Archive has both. So yeah...DVD is the only other way to watch this but it's better than any...cuz I don't there's no other way of watching it on stream. Plus, I need to buy those Archival DVD discs soon this week.

Just a question here I don't have enough knowledge of, actually, but can someone tell me how people's reception are formed when it comes to something like movies? For an example, how can a film like Ello get positive reviews on Rotten Tamatoes, but not so with people who have watched it on Youtube? (I have not watched the movie myself.)

I'm a bit late to this one, but word of advice, don't listen to YouTubers for animated movies. They're usually negative and do a lot of clickbait for movies.

A good example I could give is Smurfs. Shortly after seeing the movie this past summer, I saw a video entitled "Yeah... The Smurfs movie is TERRIBLE... (But You Already Knew That)" The thumbnail shows the user score on Rotten Tomatoes is a 12%, if you actually look at the actual Rotten Tomatoes page, it sits at a 64% user score. The YouTuber made up a fake number in hopes people don't do their own research, while making the movie user reception look worse than it actually is.

Not to mention, opinions are going to be different from person to person. Smurfs is actually one of my favorite movies and theater experiences this year. When I'm able to, I'm planning to buy the Blu-Ray.

I wouldn't trust YouTubers when it comes to movies, especially animated ones. From what I notice with cartoon/animation YouTubers, they'll always hate on most modern animated movies because they're "kids movies," while praising older animated movies, ignoring that those movies were the "kids movies" of their time, and they were the kids who grew up watching them. Nostalgia plays a role in animated movie YouTube reviews. There's a good reason why I don't watch them.

Speaking of Elio, I'm always seeing recommended on YouTube people compare Elio and KPop Demon Hunters, usually to trash on Elio. Having seen both movies, I like them both, but they're both made for two different audiences. The only thing in common is they're both animated. KPop Demon Hunters is more of an action musical movie made for an audience who like KPop and anime, and Elio is a sci-fi and comedy movie for kids and their families.

Yeah, there's a very good reason why I don't trust YouTubers when it comes to animated movies. I'm someone whose favorite movies mostly consists of animated movies.

Just enjoy movies, watch them, enjoy them, form your own opinion on them based on your experience. Don't worry about YouTubers, they don't represent everyone who watch a movie. Remember, Rotten Tomatoes paints an overall score, you really need to look at the individual critic reviews or user reviews to see how someone felt about a movie.

Edit: Sorry this was long, but I had a lot to say about the subject having seen YouTubers talk animated movies over the years.

@CaleBoi25 Indeed, or people who don't want animation to be seen as that "kids genre." I've seen so many talk about animated movies over the years on YouTube, and it just boils down to being overall negative. Saddens me really, because it generally doesn't make for good discussion on animated movies.

Years ago I once watched a review calling the first Trolls movie "TERRIBLE" (this seems to be these YouTuber's favorite word), and most of the review was nitpicking, and complaining about singing and dancing in a musical (musicals like Trolls are suppose to have singing and dancing in it). It was a bad review, it felt like he missed the point or didn't understand the movie or its world, which isn't hard to do with a movie like Trolls.

Over the years, I stopped watching these YouTubers. It's not just Trolls, it's every animated movie out there. As mentioned, I got recommended people comparing KPop Demon Hunters and Elio, and it all boiled down to "Disney bad, give me likes." I'm not putting down both movies, I enjoyed them both. Same with Smurfs, it just boiled down to "it's cool to hate Smurfs," and that's it. It's the sad state of animation discussion on YouTube.

I don't have cable, so I watch YouTube when I'm not watching shows or movies, and mostly just stick with gaming content and official animated content (like shorts, full episodes on official channels, etc). Anytime I see an animated movie YouTuber, I just click "don't recommend channel."

Saw Back to the Future at the theater today. It was awesome seeing one of my favorite movies on the big screen for the first time. I was too young to see it at the theater 40 years ago so this was a treat. That movie still holds up to this day.
