Looking for movies I've never seen before, I DVR'd Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds

Fun fact, the scene where all those birds fly in through the chimney, was actually animated. The birds were drawn on the film by hand.

I will watch again the part 1 at my local cinema and it will be my 10th times watching WICKED part 1.

Nice! I'll probably do that.

Saw Back to the Future at the theater today. It was awesome seeing one of my favorite movies on the big screen for the first time. I was too young to see it at the theater 40 years ago so this was a treat. That movie still holds up to this day.

The best was seeing the first 2 movies, double-feature style, in theatres on October 21, 2015...the date they go forward to in the sequel.

It was quite the happening!

And to top it off, when I got back to the parking lot and turned on my car, what was playing, that moment, on the radio? Huey Lewis' "The Power of Love".

It was almost too awesome a night to handle.

This weekend I saw Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein and Predator: Badlands in theatre, and recommend them both.

Frankenstein is also on Netflix.

Bookmakers say Frankenstein will probably get a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars.

And Badlands was clever, and the same director that made Prey and the animated Predator: Killer of Killers that also came out this year.

Watched A Quiet Place. It was really good! The tension was strong throughout, and all of the actor were phenomenal - Emily Blunt in particular blew it out of the water during the birth scene. The Dad's sacrifice at the end was also very nice. Honestly, my biggest issue was the use of "Signed English" throughout the film, rather than "real" American Sign Language - but in fairness, that is easier for non-signers to associate with. It's a bummer for me and other signers (especially the Deaf ones), but it makes sense from a filmmaking perspective haha. Definitely recommend it, and I'm sure I'll watch the sequel and prequel soon.

I saw it last weekend, it's decent but less breezy and more plot focussed than the first.

I'm surprised you like Wicked so much since you complain if something is vaguely political and Wicked isn't subtle.

I gave Violent Night a chance and was surprised I enjoyed it. I really don't like gore or horror, but David Harbour (from Stranger Things) and others did enough to make it entertaining. If anyone has skipped this movie and want's something new & christmas themed, this may be worth a watch.

I am looking forward to Wicked For Good, but probably waiting to stream it.

Didnt talk about it here, but a few weeks ago I watched Over The Hedge on YouTube. I have heard of this through memes online and I recall watching a 20-minute video a few years ago talking about how the film was decent and pretty funny, but compared to DreamWorks other films, this one seemed pretty forgotten and only talked about by kind of a niche audience. Saw YouTube offered this for free, so I watched it and really enjoyed it!

The film is about a slick raccoon who, after destroying a bear’s stockpile of food, is forced to recollect all his food within a week. Finding it impossible to do alone within that time frame, he manipulates a group of woodland animals who have recently woken up from hibernating to help him steal food from a small neighborhood of unsuspecting humans.

So after I finished watching this, I kind of realized this was a bit similar to another film I’ve seen before, called The Nut Job, which came years after this. Despite liking the animation in The Nut Job and finding the premise had potential to be fun, i ultimately didn’t like it from the awful humor, its terrible main character, and extremely generic supporting characters, and now that I think about it, is a bad ripoff to this. However, unlike that failure, Over the Hedge I find succeeds a lot in its characters. The cast is varied and have distinct personalities that don’t feel boring, and I love the contrast between the smooth-talking, charming RJ and the neurotic, always careful Verne, who clash and argue with how they lead and instruct the characters. While RJ is initially a bit dislikable and takes advantage of the animals, he shows regret after growing close to them and seeing that some of them look up to him. The rest of the supporting characters are awesome and silly, especially Hammy, who is the best character in this by the way! The antagonists are also hilarious but ridiculous, especially the Verminator, who has such over-the-top traps.

Another thing I liked was how zany this was. Out of the other DreamWorks films I’ve seen, this was probably the most energetic out of them all, but also insane. One scene I found the most memorable was when Verne was trying to return the wagon of food to the humans to avoid trouble, but both Verne and RJ are chased by a playful dog. The climax was so insane, ridiculous but exciting. It’s hard for me to describe both scenes, so I’d recommend seeing the film, it’s so ridiculous and entertaining! Also, did you know that the final showdown in Over the Hedge was direct inspiration for a scene in the first Sonic the Hedgehog film where Sonic stops time during the bar fight and messes with everyone while their frozen? Thought that was a fun fact to include.

I would absolutely recommend seeing this, and I absolutely agree it’s an underrated DreamWorks film! The characters are perfect, the premise is hilarious, and the zaniness makes it super memorable. I’m so disappointed it never got a sequel though, can’t believe inferior Nut Job got two sequels….

@CaleBoi25 That’s so funny! Yeah, the film is very funny but also so quotable. I actually found out about this through memes and edits people made specifically using a scene where Verne is chewing on bark (I fondly remember watching an edit where every time he chews it gets increasingly louder) and people quoting it. I guess the video I watched explaining why this film was surprisingly good was also what convinced me to watch it. Wish it got more recognition like DreamWorks other films, it’s so fun, zany and all the characters are so charming and distinct from one another. It definitely had potential for a sequel…
