@Sunsy Honestly, I think nobody should trust any opinion from critics, or other people when they are going to watch or play something. I think it’s best for people to just watch something on their own, experience the movie, and form their own opinion on it instead of acting like a movie is good or bad because a critic or another person said so, and I think when people do that, their opinions are insincere, and if the critic’s opinion is really negative and they choose to agree with them that a movie is bad and choose not to watch it, they could even be missing out on a movie that they might actually like if they gave it a chance. I pretty much avoid doing that, because I remember actually kind of doing that with a show I did eventually watch in the past, albeit it wasn’t me following negative opinions from critics and instead from fans of the show. I felt embarrassed afterward…

EDIT: I’ll add this, critics giving their positive or negative opinions is fine of course, but I don’t think a person should be heavily reliant on them all the time or copy the same opinion as them on a movie they hasn’t watched. For me, I don’t read or watch critic reviews (or any reviews in general) before watching something, it’s when I finish watching the movie and forming my own opinion that I do watch/read reviews to see how everyone else felt about it, mostly for fun.

Don’t trust critics. They’ll say anything. They’ll scrutinize the Mario movie for being a boring, lackluster movie and praise Barbie for… I don’t even know why that movie was so popular. And even worse, they’ll stone Mega Man X7 to death for being too slow and clunky (it’s not thaaat bad) and praise Mega Man 2 for giving their 5-year-old brains something to do. Don’t listen to the lies.

I'm all in favour of making up your own mind on things instead of taking reviews as gospel, but I can't get behind the narrative that critics are 'lying' and you can't 'trust' them. It's just their job to give their opinion, you don't have to agree with it but it's no more an attempt at deceit than your own opinions are.

@Dogorilla I guess I should have made it a little more silly, but I was mostly joking. I don’t actually think they’re straight up lying, but it is pretty common for some biased opinions to show up in most reviews.

@StewdaMegaManNerd That's fair, I just sometimes see people getting worked up about reviewers having different opinions to their own, and it's like... do people know how opinions work?

Mom wanted to watch the live action Cinderella from 2015 tonight. I have to say, it was a really good adaptation of the story.

@StewdaMegaManNerd I don't, but it does amuse me given most were trashing Snow White online, and the movie was not as bad as others made it out to be, from what I watched anyway. Just nice to watch something mom picked out and we both enjoyed it. It is one of many examples to me where I've seen bad press for a movie, but ended up liking it once I watched it.

@Pastellioli I agree with all of that. Seriously, IIRC, all the negative press had me not wanting to see Snow White. I'm glad my mom decided on it since Snow White was her childhood, we both enjoyed the movie, despite just about everyone on the Internet trashing it. Personally, I was surprised it was musical, the few times I've seen the commercials for it, it didn't seem like a musical outside the song "Hi Ho, Hi Ho, It's Off To Work We Go". Movie wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be.

Needless to say, Disney has done movies I haven't liked much. Saw Wish a year after release, and while it wasn't as bad as the Internet made it out to be, my disappointment were the characters. I could not get into Asha's character as much as other animated characters I like. Again, my own opinion.

Bullet Train

Seven degrees of separation, but in comedic action form. Brad Pitt is an assassin who has sworn off firearms and has a nasty bad luck streak. And even though Brad Pitt is the headliner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry control a majority of the scenes. Add to that, a whole bunch of cameos, and I have to admit I was thoroughly entertained.

Just another movie where the critic aggregate score got it wrong and the fan scores are more accurate.

@Sunsy Its great that you enjoyed it! It’s good to not let overly negative reception or opinions of a movie deter you from watching it, because, again, people following opinions like that all the time sometimes can discourage them from seeing a movie they might like, and the same can apply to TV shows, books, and games too! I just sometimes see the general public opinion on a movie out of curiosity, and then watch it, and then read how other people felt about it when I’m done with it.

I agree, and I did feel the same about Wish too, I think it wasn’t super bad, but I’m super mixed on it. I think it was interesting that they tried to go for a watercolor-looking style with the animation and the cast did a good job, especially with singing, but I wasn’t a fan of the songs and thought they were a bit underwhelming (at least in terms of the lyrics), and the characters weren’t too interesting in my opinion.

In honor of the 50th anniversary I watched Jaws tonight. In all honesty I watch this movie everytime around this year since its the quintessential summer movie. Its still one of my favorite movies and it just never ages. Just such great chemistry between Roy Schneider, Richard Dryfuss, and Robert Shaw. And I know that due to all the problems they were having with the shark was the reason behind not seeing it much but I think that just adds to the suspense. And of course the classic theme never gets old, I still get goosebumps everytime I hear it.

Definitely one of the greatest movies every made.

I have watched ELIO last time and....
Again, quite disappointing in my opinion after long deliberation.
The storyline was generic, about a boy wanted to be abducted by aliens but after get abducted, I didn't feel a lot of story progression from other aliens.
It felt the storyline just too focused on ELIO and Glordon, the other characters just forgettable and didn't do much in movie.
The music was not memorable, not even ear catchy like WICKED or Inside Out, disappointing.
Surprisingly, I was cried for a brief when almost the end of story but I was thinking I got melancholy on the wrong timing.
After watching the movie, I didn't feel I want to watch again.
My personal score for ELIO after final verdict is 6 from 10.
Not bad as two disappointing live action Disney movie Snow White, Lilo & Stitch, but still not really a good movie.
Three Disney movies 2025 in a row that really disappointed me. 😑

@Anti-Matter Looking at all the reviews of the Disney movies of this decade, I’m really worried that Toy Story 5 is going to fall on its face and ruin the franchise. I have no idea what to think of Frozen 3. I keep forgetting that it’s even happening.

Frozen 2 was mediocre.
The story was unnecessary, the songs are forgettable, I watched only one time at cinema and never watched again because it was Blah for me.
Better Disney finished Toy Story 5 with satisfying ending as the ending of Toy Story 4 was like cliffhanger that lead to another sequel.
Frozen 3, I assumed the storyline will be even mediocre and the songs will be more forgettable.

@StewdaMegaManNerd Honestly I tried disregarding any critic reviews before playing X7, and I still hated it by the end. Same with some other stuff like the recent Disney movies, A Minecraft Movie, and the third season of Digimon Xros Wars

Watched Elio in the cinema today and I think it was surprisingly good. Lots of cute and heartwarming scenes. Definitely feel like I can trust Disney or Pixar again to make animations for children.

@Jhena
I was the opposite.
I thought ELIO was disappointing from the storyline structure and how did ELIO desperately wanted to be abducted by aliens without considering the consequences after being abducted and he had to lie to be accepted as the member just for running away from the Earth because he got bullied and felt lonely after lost his parents.
I thought the movie didn't explore that much the other aliens as the Communiverse members as they felt like cameo or less important characters. The movie just only too focused on ELIO and didn't give much character development for other characters like the aliens, Bryce, Melmac, the backstory of ELIO parents before the demise.
Also, the movie didn't have catchy or memorable songs like Inside Out so the songs just forgettable after watching the movie.

@Anti-Matter
I know, I read your other comment too. I think the film concentrated on the characters I cared for. It would have been cool to see more of Glordon's past life though, to better understand why he is so friendly. Showing how his parents were the only ones who cared for him and understood him might have been better to understand Elio's loneliness, but I think it worked just fine the way they did it.

Just finished A Minecraft Movie. Decided to put something on while I was drawing and gosh that was so fun but so stupid haha.

I was actually supposed to see this in theaters a few weeks after it came out, but I never did, but I still planned on watching it once it came out on streaming, kind of “for the funny” as they say, so I avoided reading much about it’s plot and reviews until I saw it myself.

This movie is not very good in terms of plot and writing, it’s sort of thin and can be at times really cliched (I could even guess what was going to happen at one point in the movie during the climax), and I do think that it takes the movie quite a while to put the characters in the Overworld and introduce more elements from the game, so the opening parts introducing the rest of the characters (sans Steve) make it feel like an entirely different movie unrelated to Minecraft. Plus, a lot of the characters are kinda underdeveloped and not super complex.

Though, it’s a stupidly fun movie that’s aware it’s stupid and doesn’t try taking itself seriously, and it makes the experience even more better. Like, a few of the characters are fully aware of how stupid some of the others act, and then really cheesy, corny, and stupid moments that are just so silly to watch. One that comes to mind for me is how Steve is introduced to the main group…the way he defeats the zombies on the tower is so stupid and over the top, and then the zombies going up in flames and disintegrating behind him when it becomes daylight, all set to the song Lil Boo Thang…the scene tries to be so cool but exaggerates it so much, and the kind of unfitting song makes it comes off as so hilariously silly, maybe a bit epic, and cheesy, I love it. Then I remember hearing a bit about the kind of unnecessary and random romance between the divorced vice principal and Villager before seeing it, and I kind of found it a bit funny how the reason they only got together and the principal choosing to take him out to dinner was only because she accidentally hit him with her car and didn’t want to get sued.

But, I think what makes the film the MOST hilarious to me is how you can clearly see the green screen with how the actors and actresses kind of pop out of the blocky backgrounds and worlds. It looks so awful but it makes the film so hilarious because of how it adds onto how the characters look really out of place for almost the whole time they’re in the Overworks, and the cheap quality of the green screen during certain scenes (one example being when Henry is trying to sneak around the mansion midway through the film) makes it look like one of those green screen meme edit videos YouTube would probably randomly recommend you. Then there’s the songs which are also intentionally stupid and so cheesy too, but I’ll say that even though they are cheesy and dumb, the lava chicken song is sung really well and a bit catchy for an extremely short song. I’ll give genuine props for the performances of the actors and actresses (especially Jack Black) that make the film more hilarious, how the Overworld looked during parts, the retro game store that briefly appears during parts of the film looked really cool, and the themes about creativity, not being stifled by others and having zero limits to what you can make, I really liked, especially since I’m a person who likes art, imagination, and creating.

I heard this is already getting a sequel, and I’m curious about what they’ll do with that one. Hoping it’s as cheesy and stupid fun as this one! Not sure what I’ll watch next, but I have been a bit into cartoons lately, also from watching a few on YouTube a few days ago. Saw that they now have The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie on streaming, and I heard good things about that, so I’ll probably check that out later today.

A Greyhound of a Girl. An irish animated film based on a book by Roddy Doyle. 5 stars for me. Beautiful story, animation, voice acting, and music. I feel this got really really overlooked at the time. Wish there was more like it.

@Pastellioli omg yes!!! i love your thoughts here! i just watched it when it finallyyy came to max the other day (i avoided seeing in theatres cause i heard some crazy stuff with the chicken jockey trend and well, time) and it was definitely a funny one. as a big minecraft fan, i loved all the references (technoblade!), and i agree with you, the cast was surprisingly really talented and the cgo wasnt near so bad as i thought. the villager date scenes were the best though, and the creator of minecraft as the waiter? perfect.
yeah they already confirmed a second one (no surprise with the money they made) and theyve already teased alex so itll probably be about her and maybe the end? im excited to see though 😝

Watched A Minecraft Movie with my wife and it was fun. It is not a movie to be taken seriously. I had to explain to her all about the crafting and the NPCs

And watching Stifler's mom was a hilarious bonus as well!!!

Momoa was so out of control that I liked him the most
