@jedgamesguy Speaking of Nausicaa, I recently bought the DVD from Goodwill from the day before. It's the Disney release instead of the GKids release.

I remember first watching it on T.V. back in 2006. The only Studio Ghibli film I haven't seen yet is The Secret World of Arietty. Earwig & the Witches I'm skipping since I'm getting kinda tired of CGI animated films. Bad enough I see enough of that from Pixar, Illumination, & maybe DreamWorks.

Recently, I've been trying to get my hands on the Return of Jafar on Blu-ray/DVD & that's one of the elusive Disney I'm trying to find. Particularly the Blu-ray & DVD combo. My brother doesn't care for Blu-rays, so the DVD versions he's fine with.

Then I'm buying Abigail (Blu-ray/DVD combo) off Amazon. Thought it was a interesting movie.

And lastly, X the Unknown (1958). I first saw it on Sundance back in 2010. Thought it was a better "blob" movie compared to The Blob & The H-man.

@Pastellioli I have to agree with that. Honestly, my thing with critics often boils down to simply not agreeing with them. A fan of movies and a film critic usually look for different things in movies. I'll use Trolls for an example. As a fan of Trolls, I have my expectations and things to look for. Like the arts and crafts inspired world, the musical numbers, stories about the characters, new locations and characters that build on the series. While I'm looking for that, a critic may not, they may be looking for other things in the movie. Film critics look at movies differently than most people do. This is also why I don't care much for the academy awards, why animation fans take the "Best Featured Animated Movie" category so seriously, is beyond me.

Though, I'll never take YouTube movie "critics" seriously. Saw this one Trolls Band Together review of someone angry and ranting about the movie, poorly reviewing the movie, then just saying how Barbie movie is better. All I got was "I'm angry this movie series I don't like exist, Trolls bad, Barbie movie good" from it. It didn't tell me anything other than the "critic" likes Barbie.

Sorry for the tangent on critics, that root beer float and a family movie sounds like an awesome movie night to me. Sometimes a good light hearted, non-serious, fun movie is all you need for a good time.

To answer your question on The Matrix, The Matrix is on Netflix, but be fast about it because the movies have a red "leaving soon" on it. Also, I've seen the first Matrix movie, and I like it. Good sci-fi movie with action scenes. Some of it is a bit on the slow side near the beginning.

Edit: Speaking of Minions, I just got an ad with Minions on Nintendo Life's home page, lol.

@Sunsy I do like to watch videos on people analyzing kids movies or shows for fun or reviewing them, but it does seem to be geared more towards people that take the art of cinema more seriously or look for certain things in a movie or show.

I am pretty easy to please with the video games, movies, and shows I play and watch, so if it was something I haven't watched that was silly or lighthearted like that Knuckles show that was released earlier this year or Trolls World Tour, I wouldn't mind watching them for fun and would probably think highly of them, but if it was a critic and someone who takes movies and television more seriously, then they would think of them less and likely dislike them because they might lack some things they expect or want to see in the media they watch. I can recall watching this review of Knuckles and it was more on the mixed side, but if I were to see it, I think I'd like it, though I'll probably only watch the first episode since that one they made free on YouTube.

And yes, that animated film award they give out at the Academy is just so bad. Almost all the time the winners are Disney and Pixar, plus I can remember this pretty dumb comment they gave out that really ticked off a lot of animators, I think it was something along the sentiment like "animation is a genre" or "animation is something that can only be enjoyed by kids" which just shows how out of touch the Academy is with animation and kids entertainment. The 2022 or 2023 Oscars were the only Academy presentation I watched and I'm probably never going to do it again.

Dang it, and The Matrix is on Netflix? What a shame, cuz that's the only streaming service we don't have and I'm not sure if I want to subscribe there because of how bad the subscription tiers have gotten. Might have to wait and see which other subscription services it'll eventually be added to. I can recall seeing months ago the first Matrix was on Max but it got taken off apparently and its only Resurrections that is on there. I don't know if my brother was searching hard enough, and I do think it is weird if it isn't on there since if I recall Warner Bros. owns The Matrix and the streaming service Max. Maybe a temporary licensing deal or something. Might have to check later for The Matrix and then see which streaming services have Saving Private Ryan. I'm hoping I can handle realistic violence if I see those soon...I can handle gorier violence as long as its cartoony, but I do feel a certain way if it is realistic...

@Pastellioli Similarly, I like watching reactions. So much fun watching someone react to a big moment in a movie. Yes, critics usually look at movies along those lines.

I kind of feel the same way. If I enjoy something, I'm just going to be honest and say I enjoy it or it's a good movie, something like that. I've seen all of Knuckles. I don't have Paramount+, my friend does, so we ended up having pizza and watching the whole series at his place. We both thought it was great, got some good laughs out of it. I did see the first episode too because they put it on YouTube.

Yeah, the thing is, at least with the animation community, it just feels like they care more about the animated movie's reputation and treating movies like trophies more than anything. I always see them taking "best animated movie" so seriously. At least that's what I get whenever the best animated movie is brought up. Indeed anyone can enjoy animation, there's no need to take an award so seriously. Not having an award isn't going to stop you from watching a movie. For me personally, I like family friendly animated movies.

Yeah, I was surprised Netflix had The Matrix. I assume Max would have it too, but I'm guessing Warner Bros. does the same thing Universal does. Universal puts movies on Peacock, their service, then it will appear on Netflix later on. Actually, Trolls Band Together is now on Peacock, coming to Netflix tomorrow. They also did this with Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken (underrated movie IMHO, saw it in the theater last year), and even Minions Rise of Gru and Puss In Boots The Last Wish. I guess some streaming services do this. Paramount does this too. Paw Patrol The Movie was recently added to Netflix, and that was on Paramount+.

The only thing I could think of is giving others a taste of what their streaming service has to offer, by adding a movie here and there.

I'm waiting for this Doraemon movie on 17 July 2024 here in Indonesia.
Untitled

I really hope the Cinema XXI inside the mall that will air the movie at least located not too far away from my house since 17 July 2024 is Wednesday, the chance for me to watch the movie with the cheapest price during Monday to Thursday.
I hope it will last until Sunday 21 July 2024 at Cinema XXI as the anime movies are never stay for long at XXI so I have to book the ticket quickly as I had experienced with almost 99% seat got booked for Doraemon movie last year because only one XXI that aired the movie.
Glad, I still able to get the seat for Doraemon movie last year and i got the very left middle row seat.

Just saw Lisa Frankenstein. Best 80s film not made in the 80s ever. Loved it from start to finish. If you like John Hughes type films, but with a tad more dark humour and zaniness, it is worth a watch. Zelda Williams has instantly convinced me to watch whatever she directs next.

I've seen a smattering of Studio Ghibli films, and so far Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is the only one I've enjoyed. It reminded me of the film The Last Unicorn, which I enjoyed as a kid, it was dark and interesting. After seeing Nausicaa I googled around and found the same team that did The Last Unicorn also made Nausicaa, so it makes sense that I connected the 2.

I just bought the Nausicaa manga boxset. Some consider the manga Hayao Miyazaki's masterpiece. It was written for years after the movie and has tons of extra story.

Just finished The Matrix a few minutes ago and holy ravioli, that was so AMAZING. I had heard of the film for years, how influential it was, how many people lauded it as one of the greatest movies of all time, and I saw it constantly referenced in pop culture. However, I never saw it and knew little about the story and plot, as I had no interest in it. However, what increased my interest in the film is that a video game that is dear to my heart did a cool-as-heck parody of the lobby shooting scene, which was one of my favorite moments in the game. It was that only scene in the game that made me want to see the film, and I was not disappointed!

It is a bit too slow at the beginning and I do feel that there isn't a lot of action besides the opening scene, but things get so exciting at the midway point, and the parts nearing the end are the best with how action-packed they are. When I saw Neo and Trinity enter the lobby and Neo showing the guard his huge array of guns before attacking, I got so freaking hyped and was clapping so much, cuz I could recognize a TON of moments in the shootout, plus the music was familiar and so hardcore, but there were so many other scenes after and before that I could recognize too. The effects in that scene, including the slow-mo and the iconic bullet time in the later scenes, enhanced the memorability since it was so fun to watch. The plot is so interesting, the concepts the film has and explains are unique, and the characters are so cool and memorable, though I will say that the other characters in the crew were killed off too quickly. I don't watch or consume sci-fi media and lack an interest in it, but this movie is maybe the one exception for me.

I had such a great time watching, and I'd say it was the best way for me to end the night. However, despite having said that, I don't plan on watching the sequels. If I remember, don't people say that the recent movie wasn't good?

@jedgamesguy I have seen a few of Ghibli's movies, but for the longest time, I never watched a few of their more popular and iconic ones. If I recall, I have seen Ponyo countless amount of times, Howl's Moving Castle, From Up on Poppy Hill, and Spirited Away, but I still have not seen My Neighbor Totoro, and it wasn't until May of this year I finally saw Kiki's Delivery Service. I pretty much have not watched a good chunk of their library. I am absolutely not seeing Earwig and the Witch though, since it sounds like its one of Ghibli's worst, plus the animation looks off, but it is not surprising given Ghibli is known for 2D animation and that film was their first (and probably last) film using 3D.

Looooots of Ghibli talk here, deservedly so of course! Anyone who likes Studio Ghibli I'd also invite to watch anything by Makoto Shinkai. It's far more angsty and teen-oriented than Ghibli and uses some computer graphics for some big shots but his movies are brilliant, especially Garden of Words, Your Name and Weathering With You. Haven't seen Suzume yet.

Easily recommend Arietty, it's a short one as far as Ghibli films go, only an hour and a bit, but it's really cute and the plot runs pretty quick. It's a unique Ghibli movie for a few reasons, one, it was directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who then did When Marnie Was There then left Ghibli and did Mary and the Witch's Flower, and two, it's the only Ghibli movie not scored by a Japanese. It was Cécile Corbel, who has an angelic voice and even better musical talent.

@MontyCircus Ironic, you think Nausicaä is Miyazaki's best work despite it being his first "Ghibli film". Can't say much on The Boy and the Heron but I think that his movies are almost all consistently good to the point that of his 12, I believe at least 5 or 6 can be considered his best. Spirited Away is the best-known but I think The Wind Rises is a little underrated given how imbued with finality it is. I felt like this truly was his last movie, even though that's no longer true. I also liked Ponyo, very simple as far as plot goes but it's just so adorable. Princess Mononoke I think is his most mature given how uncrazed it handles the subject matter. Howl's Moving Castle felt very overtly anti-war to the point it contrived the plot for me.

@Pastellioli Heh, that's far from the most obtuse way to watch Ghibli. Kiki's Delivery Service was one of my first though, it's a treasure. I'd recommend checking out Isao Takahata's Ghibli movies though, they're much more mature and sombre than even Miyazaki's best. Grave of the Fireflies was so depressing and hopeless, Only Yesterday is incredibly melancholic especially between the two art styles, and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya feels hand-crafted by a literal god. His work's much more grounded but since when's that a bad thing?

Technically, Nausicaa was pre-Studio Ghibli (insert wacky smiley face here)

I like old things generally (books/comics/movies/video games), so it makes sense to me that I'd like his oldest work best.

I just started collecting '70s & '80s seinen manga. I wasn't into that scene at the time, but I like the idea of starting at the beginning.

My advice would be to watch the next one The Matrix: Reloaded and then stop there.
Reloaded has 3 jaw-droppingly awesome action sequences that are worth the price of admission themselves. And Monica Bellucci doesn't hurt either.

I got suckered in by Prime Day and ordered a bunch of 4Ks (since most were only around $10 a pop, save one or two).

  • 1917
  • Back to the Future trilogy
  • Braveheart
  • Dune: Part 1
  • Kong: Skull Island
  • Godzilla (2014)
  • Godzilla: KotM
  • Godzilla vs Kong
  • Schindler's List
  • Zach Snyder's Justice League

Not sure when I'm going to have the time to watch all of it though. I've picked up well over a dozen standard Blu-Rays thrifting over the last month that I'm not even close to getting through as well, lol.

Also just remembered I have the "Criterion" Risky Business 4K on pre-order that releases next week as well.

Watched Mr. Peabody and Sherman tonight, it's actually one of those "free with ads" movies on YouTube right now. It's been awhile since I've seen this one, and you know what, I still love it. A movie I wish more have seen, because it is in my opinion, a great movie. Albeit an underrated one.

@Sunsy It’s also been a while since I last saw Mr. Peabody and Sherman but I remember loving it so much and it being so funny. I’ve been seeing clips from the film being used in a lot of memes on Instagram, so it’s nice to see it have a resurgence online and seeing lots of people come out and talk about how much they love it I do remember that YouTube has some amazing and interesting movies that can be watched for free with ads.
