@Rambler That's the thing with Nolan's films, they often have multiple endings, or challenge the idea of a traditionally structured ending. Dark Knight does this when the Joker gets captured both times, then actually ends when Two-Face is finally killed.

In two weeks, I'm gonna go see "Turning Red" at my theater.

Just saw my last of this year's 10 Oscars Best Picture nominees: "The Zone of Interest".

It's a holocaust film, that follows the Auschwitz commandant and his family, who are living directly over the wall next to the concentration camp. All of the drama/action/killings/horror happens off-screen but is at the same time ever-present. I thought it was pretty good.

I was surprised to see Sandra Huller starring in it, as she was also fantastic in Anatomy of a Fall, which was also nominated for Best Picture this year. Starring in 2 Best Picture nominees in the same year? What a year for her!

@Rambler Thanks for the article link!

I found it interesting because nothing "dramatic" happens. No shootouts, no chases, no dramatic crying fits, the good guys don't win in the end, etc. It's not something that average Joe "Here I am now entertain us" would enjoy at all. But yet it does what it does effectively.

Yeah it’s really good, well horrible but a good film. It’s a silent horror which goes in the opposite direction of Schindler’s List’s take on the holocaust. I now keep thinking about Hansel & Gretel and how they pushed the witch into the fire…

I’ve wanted to see Anatomy Of A Fall ever since Cannes but it came out in the cinema whilst I was busy so now I’m waiting for it to hit streaming. I like courtroom thrillers in general and someone described it to me that it’s like Star Trek, there’s all this stuff going on but then they just stop to argue philosophy.

I suppose in one sense, it has to be appropriate to the type of film and the target audience. I've not seen any recent Nolan films - the last one I saw was Inception, but I've seen four other earlier ones - but he does appear to be reaching for bigger audiences without necessarily selling out. Having said that, bigger production values do no necessity make for a better experience.

I've not seen the Dark Knight, so I might be totally wrong, but there was definitely a trend in the late 90s for action films to outstay their welcome with what felt like false endings or a very late plot development. Speed does this, I think.

I don’t really see it as a fake out ending, it’s more to me that they had to try and get the film thematically back on track after spoilers the Batman vs Joker fight and it’s hamfisted The Killing Joke-esque confrontation with the idea of a notable lie for the good of society by letting people think Two Face is a good guy with his good work done as DA. I actually think it completely undoes the previous scene proving Joker right whilst compromising Batman but hey ho.

@IceDomino Enjoy Turning Red when you see it. As much as I want to see it on the big screen, I might not be able to. Also, my local theater isn't even listing showtimes or pre-sale tickets, which they usually would do by now.

@Rambler not a bad list but it’s very on the nose for prestige films, like when you see bestest everest movie lists and it’s just made up of Citizen Kane, Godfather, 2001, 12 Angry Men etc so could do with a few more far field choices that don’t feel like a beginners guide to arthouse sci-fi like Primer or Videodrome.

Watched the first Despicable Me because Despicable Me 4 was revealed yesterday. Still love the story of a villain, warming up to the three orphans he adopted.

Also, Despicable Me 4 trailer for those interested.

I'm aware that people aren't excited for Despicable Me 4 (even though I've seen posts of people BEGGING for one a few years back), but since I'm easily entertained, I'll be seeing that one when it comes out.

@IceDomino I don't mind the series, actually, I've enjoyed the movies, even watched the two Minions movies wanting to watch something fun this past December. I think most people don't like the Minions for whatever reasons. At least over the years online, I notice the hate is towards the Minions characters.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Despicable Me 4.

RR529

Killers of the Flower Moon (Apple TV+) - This was a pretty interesting (& depressing) watch. I think I preferred Oppenheimer (just more personally interested in it's subject matter), but this was definitely a strong film.

Royal Space Force: the Wings of Honnêamise (Blu-Ray) - the first commercial work of Gainax (Evangelion, Gurren Lagann, Gunbuster, etc.) and it was excellent. A fictional nation's fledgeling space program is trying to get a man into space before the nation's military (as well as that of an adversary) attempts to use the project to ignite war.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

@Zuljaras If you like The Shining you should check out Doctor Sleep, it's where the kid grows up with PTSD and has another wacky adventure.

It's based on the book which was the sequel to the book version of The Shining, however Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick argued over the movie for being too different, but the movie Doctor Sleep does a good job of bridging the two versions of The Shining. I really liked it when I last saw it and have been meaning to do a double bill of The Shining and Doctor Sleep one evening ever since.

@jump I will. I read about the book and how many things like the ending and the fate of some characters are different.

My all time favorite SK movie (I have not read any of the books) will be Pet Cematary.

Next movie stops are Wish and Doctor Sleep

Zuljaras

Watched Doctor Sleep, what a terrifying movie! And the return to the hotel was so creepy!

I am going to follow it with something light like Wish

I'm just going to leave this for @Eagly_lmtd_xmasskin.

Possibly a TV movie kind of thing, but still new Megamind content nonetheless.
