Well, now that we've decided he'll go down eventually, how long will he last? Mario and DK's copyrights expire in 2072 I think it is (or a year around there), and then they will go into public domain. I think he will last until then.
Are there people in here honestly expecting something to last forever?
No, Mario will not be around forever.
They probably said that about Alexander the Great, yet he's still conquering virtual worlds in Civilization games 2300 years later. :3
Also, when our brains are pickled in a jar and hooked up to Skynet in 4312 AD, and we see your great great great great great [etc.] grandchildren playing Newer Super Mario Bros. 1024, I'll make you eat your words. (metaphorically, of course, since you won't have a mouth)
Nothing lasts forever, but Mario seems to be just as popular, if not more, today than he was 25 years ago. People who aren't into gaming buy Mario swag. Yoshi helps. I'm worried we've seen the last of Mega Man. Mega Man 11 should have been out by now (when compared to the spacing between 9 and 10's release dates) and there's no word of the game whatsoever and I don't think there's been a new X game in over three years.

Yes, but while the bards of the day probably kept Alexander the Great at the top of the Epic Poetry charts back in the day, I don't think he's the character all the cool kids know about these days
Here's an awesome example: Mickey Mouse. Mickey Mouse was for a long time the most important, most recognisable character in the world. His star has faded and now Mario occupies that top spot.
Mario's star will fade. He's not going to disappear. And people 2000 years from now will likely study him in history class. But his time as the top is limited - something will take over.
So, to point out the topic: "Is Mario Doomed for Decline." Yes. He is.
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!
Well, I think he can last the whole hundred years of his copyright. Although, it's like Wikipedia says: "...if copyright laws remain unaltered". Who knows how copyrights will work in 2072?
It seems that Capcom only want to release Mega man games on retro download services now but that's not too bad for me as I have loads of catching up to do with that series. Also, I can actually see what you mean with Mario because the sales may not be declining but even though SM3DL is a great game, it clearly isn't in the same league as the other 4 3D Mario platformers and we could be seeing a 2D Mario platformer on 3DS this year which would make 2012 the fourth year in a row to have a main series Mario entry and while I doubt this will cause a bad Mario game to be released if it continues, the creativity of the series could start declining and there's a chance that they'll never get close to the best entries in the series again.

I don't exactly disagree.
but this was my thoughts after Sunshine and a neverending amount of sports games
