@JR: Sweet dude, I'm really glad you like it. Speaking of liking things... ZOMFG what an episode!!!
SPOILERS, ONE MASSIVE ANSWER, AND SPOILERS!!!
The numbers!!! I know it came late in the episode but I have to start there. All we've known about them so far is that they are part of the Valenzetti Equation, some equation in the Lost universe that will predict the day humanity destroys itself. Lots of complicated stuff that I could never quite match to the many occurrences of, or regular references to 'the numbers'. To see them laid out like that in the cave, with names attached, the names of all the characters we have known so long, the names of the... candidates, was awesome! Finally! I'll delve into more when I've wrapped my noodle around it. I mean... Jacob touched them, they came. The 'special candidates' numbers were imprinted on the hatch, they appear to Hurley OFTEN (he the key), and so many other instances. WTF?! Alright, enough of that, woah. I need to check screencaps tho' (NOW) of all those crossed out names, see if there is anyone else we know
Whilst we are in the cave, I laughed out loud at 'the inside joke', excellent! ATL was extra cool, seeing John and Helen was nice, and Rose, and Benjamin ***in' Linus, LMAO! So much stuff off island is linking together and it's great to see it play out (for how long though). And Hurley, the luckiest coolest guy alive, brilliant!
I've typed enough, but will finish on what was one of the best Smokey moments ever! Cruising about the island, looking for his knife, nosing through the curtains at Sawyers den of Dharma Bourbon (I need one o' them bottles).
Sawyer... D: OMG, I hope he is onto Smocke I really do. D:
spoiler spoil!!!! END!
What did you lot think?
EDIT: @PaupackElite: Yeah dude noticed that. So, if they are on talking terms with Locke's father, how the hell did Locke become paralyzed in this timeline?
About the episode The Substitute (and some LOST speculation as well), I've been wonder what essentially was "Evil" Locke's inside joke was when he in Jacob's Name Cave (that's what I'm calling it) and I have a guess as to what it is. A long time ago, the smoke monster confronted an "older" Jacob in the Name Cave as to why he couldn't leave the Island (another theory I have is that Jacob is preventing the smoke monster from getting off the Island, which is a theory that I am also using in this other theory). Jacob brings out the scale that's shown in the actual episode The Substitute and places a black rock on one side and a white rock on the other. Jacob starts to explain that if one of them were not present on the Island, the Island would sink into the Ocean, killing anyone that was on it and causing some sort of time anomaly that would cause the deaths of everybody on Earth, but at different time for each person (again, another theory that I made up and am using). However, the smoke monster doesn't believe Jacob at all, laughing and saying that he told him that to keep him away from ever being able to live his life like a normal human being that he once was (yet again, another theory). This would explain how Jack is feeling that something is wrong in the alternate universe where Flight 815 doesn't crash and how Juliet's last thoughts were "It worked." before she died (since she was being affected by the anomaly in the other universe). Most of this is based on heavy speculation, but it's a theory, and I'm not expecting it to be true at all. Just remember that, people.
P.S. If I'm forgetting something from another episode that explains what the "inside joke" was about please remind me and we'll forget about this and move on.

I like what your saying Ninjadude, about the scales and the need for balance. Going on your theory then, if smokey left in the ATL and the island sank, could that mean that smokey is 'loose'? How cool would it be if he showed up in the ATL. ha!
BTW... what the fudge is he? He said he was a man once. but he could be lying
@JR They sure do, and the next episode is.. The Candidate (EDIT: NO IT ISNT, ERROR, that's later). Sweet! And I forgot about the boy who appeared to smokey (and sawyer), who the fudge is that? Older Aaron, younger Jacob, someone else? some think it might be Isaac, from the bible, Jacob and someone's father, but I don't like that

That's also another theory I had, but smokey could have somehow died in the explosion that occurred in the ATL, which would be a huge gap in the theory, almost going as far as to disproving the theory entirely, so I didn't really wanna say that was a possible theory if it had a ginormous gap in it. But it would be awesome to see smokey in the ATL. Wait a sec......what if smokey is impersonating the people who should've died in the ATL after the explosion, like Ben, and using them to get to the "chosen" ones (like how Locke met Ben in the teacher's lounge in that one school) and trying to convince them to go with whatever plan he made with the Valenzetti Equation?
SPOILERS ARE OVER!!!

I have to go to bed! But I'll just say... I'm not convinced an explosion would sink the island, hence why I liked your alternate theory as to how it sank.
I'll be back tomorrow to jabber more. It's great, I feel like this episode blew open so much. So much (more) to theorize about. YES!

I don't know if an H bomb would sink an island and leave it completely intact. I'm no physics bomb expert, but a Hydrogen bomb blowing up wouldn't just sink the island. And even if it did, there would have to be some residual effect such as New Otherton being decimated.
Anyway, you guys should check out the Season 5 special edition DVD or Blu-Ray. They have the orientation video we see whenever someone comes to the island (i.e. "The Man Behind the Curtain," and "Namaste"), the truce agreement between the hostiles and Dharma, a patch to steam onto a jumpsuit based on where you work, and even a map of the Barracks, and many more. It's pretty sick.
Good day. ... I said Good day We have to go back Kate! WE HAVE TO GO BAAAAAAAACK!!!!! Modern Warfare Reflex Edition 5332-3502-2691 My Backloggery
@PaupackElite: Agreed, new Otherton was relatively fine, and in the underwater sequence you could see one of the statues ankh's was lying beside the foot (as though it had fallen, not been blown apart). A hydrogen bomb would have done a lot more damage.
I've avoided buying the box sets thus far. I'm waiting for THE FULL SET, which will be housed in the fuselage of Oceanic 815. At least I hope anyway. but that does sound very cool!
I really think this show is going to turn into an all out war between light and dark. At least on the island anyway. Smocke is "recruiting"? Anna gathered Jacob's ashes. Those are probably a like kryptonite against Smocke. This **** is going to be epic and I can't ****ing wait!
Locke: Why would you help me? Widmore: Because there's a war coming, John. And if you're not back on the island when that happens, the wrong side is going to win.
I'm still unclear as to who is on what side, and which should be seen as good, but woah, it's gonna be epic.
EDIT: About John (the real one), seeing him being buried last night put pay to my hopes that he might be used as a vessel by Jacob, and the climactic scenes of Lost would involve Light John vs Dark John. Damn! but then just cos they buried him doesn't mean....
@SSBBRAWLER: you might as well just edit the thread title to include SPOILER!!!, ha!!
Go back to season one - Locke playing 'that game' (mental lapse) with Walt with the black and white pieces. Locke holds the pieces up and explains to Walt what they represent - and that they balance.
Locke and Jacob represent the 'white' or 'good' - they are in Jacobs cave, remember, that is his scale - balanced. Smoke Locke represents the dark side, the bad.
Smoke Locke threw the white rock (Jacob) off the scale, making it unbalance to the black side (Smokey) because he killed Jacob, and now he is all that is left, unless that Ghost Kid is Jacob as a kid? Anyway, Smoke Locke threw the rock with John Locke's body, so that furthers the irony, that is the inside joke - he has Locke's memories, apparently.
Hope that helps your discussion.
Bonus Question : What was the name of the last Charles DIcken's novel that Desmond had not read - because he was saving it for before his death?
Yeah, I'm a big Dickens fan, but Our Mutual Friend was one that I only ever got half way through. Perhaps I should try again, because it must hold the secrets to Desmondo's fate, totally.
Charlie should be in jail in theory, perhaps super rich and awesome Hurley can bail him out.
What is interesting about Lost is you never know who is really good or bad on the show, black and white rocks be tossed....
Should Sayid be poisened? Is Jacob 'good'? Is Smokey 'bad'? Can you trust the Temple Others? Was John a good person or a bad person? Is it enough for Locke to mean well when other lives are destroyed in his quest for meaning and answers?
Also - we are at the mercy of the writers - they decide who gets featured in the show - they silence, or kill off, or ban our favorite charachters, and give voice to those who we may not care for. Sometimes with Lost I cannot see an rhyme or reason or consistency to the greater narative....
And sometimes on the show people are not whom they seem - they come back in different bodies, or have to hide thier pasts and their identities.
And some storylines and charachter traits seem to repeat so often they become predictable and unappealing - been there, done that - seen that, heard that, yes I remember that, can we move on please?
I feel Lost......sometimes. And who can not relate to 'we have to go back'? I am sure a lot of us would like to time tavel, and 'fix' things, or try an alternate reality. Flash foward, flash backward, flash sideways. Just to be a part of something. It is a show about lonely people, we are all so lonely, in our own ways.
