With no cable and only free Hulu to watch at home, i've been watching all kinds of odds and ends lately, but only recently have i stumbled upon the wealth of cheesy awesomeness that is Korean drama shows. These historical ones are awesome! Chuno/The Slave Hunters is amazing, i just got done watching The Painter of the Wind (being an artist myself, so much love for that show~), and I'm currently watching episode 8 of Sungkyunkwan Scandal. Anyone else have anything in particular they'd like to talk about or recommend? :3

I wouldn't know the name of them, but when I was in Fiji there was some really weird dubbed drama on the television. I think it may have been a show from the Pacific, but it was so funny.
I just love how ridiculous they all are, it's some elaborate plot that always involves death, sex, some mob leader, and a princess.

The Slave Hunters is probably the more manly/testosterone-filled of the three i mentioned before. I forgot to mention The Duo as well; what I saw of that was also fantastic (my husband went on with the series without me and then we moved on D: )

I was just about to bring that up. I found it randomly and started watching it, and it's really good. I'm afraid that's literally the only Korean drama I've ever seen. I do know there's a Japanese drama that's pretty good, though: Liar Game.
Sungkyunkwan Scandal is great, I loved that show. The ending is a bit of a letdown, but a lot of Korean dramas don't end very well anyway. My favourite K-drama is Shining Inheritance (aka Brilliant Legacy). Highly recommended for its stellar acting and story. (And for having a satisfying ending!)
If I may extend this into J-dramas, Nodame Cantabile is charming and downright HILARIOUS if you're looking for something with a lighter tone.
And as Mickeymac said, Liar Game is a great thriller with nothing scary or gory in it - it's about a series of clever con artist games which people play against one another to steal large amounts of money. (Though the acting of certain characters can be grating at times.)
I just watched the final episode of SS yesterday, and yeah, it was pretty confusing and kind of a letdown.
SPOILERS!
. . .
The king in particular was very odd. there was no resolution with the class president and Cho Seon, and Yoon Hee was allowed to continue cross-dressing? Even to the point where she was allowed to be a professor at Sungkyunkwan? wtf, how does that make any sense? It's nice, but it makes no sense D: and was there no punishment for the War Minister?
and what about his daughter? i really felt bad for that poor girl — yes, she was dumb and spoiled as hell, her crush was inappropriately strong and all, but first she was being used by her brother (kinda) to get Lee Soon Joon on 'their side' via marriage, then Lee Soon Joon jerked her around by saying he'd marry her then saying he wouldn't... and then she was the one to accidentally betray Yoon Hee. She had to have felt awful considering it could've meant death for a fellow girl, and yet after she told Yeorim what was going on, that was the last we saw of her*. unless she was that Blue Messenger at the end. i couldn't get a good enough look at her face, but that would be pretty hilarious if it had been her, lol../ i should rewatch the very end of the episode today just to make sure :3
i did like how the Left Minister accepted Yoon Hee and asked her to stay with his boy, though. He kinda turned into a sweet old man. but wtf about her mother and brother? no resolution for them either... aargh, so frustrating, especially when the rest of the series was so great! D:

OMG! Did you and your husband split up!? Did you get fed up with his selfishness and have a affair with the cute humour variegated at your local coffers shop who turned out to be secret crime fighter who rides a tamed lion only to have his psychotic girlfriend try to kill with elaborate schemes and then when you finally stopped her after an epic fight on the cliffside during a storm you found out she was really you long lost sister just as she plummeted to her death!?
There was one I used to watch every Sunday morning over here, something about a restaurant and a girl working there who's searching for her lost autistic brother. That's just scratching the surface, as the plot was entirely deep when I started watching it, so you can tell I wasn't really paying attention. It was a tad interesting though... Yeah, I should stick to stuff I actually follow from the beginning and understand.

O:
... while that does indeed sound amazing and almost worthy of being portrayed in a cheesy drama of its own, sadly what I meant was 'we moved on [to the next series that interested us]', lol :3

I've never seen a Korean drama, but I'm a huge fan of Jee-Woon Kim's movies (The Good, The Bad, The Weird; I Saw The Devil; A Tale of Two SIsters). He is, IMO, one of the best directors around. Just about all of his movies are one Netflix.

@tbd Yeah, the ending of SS was pretty bad. You have to consider that they couldn't have made it publicly known she was a woman (historical accuracy - it was a real university), nor would it have made sense for her to settle down as a typical housewife. The writers of K-dramas often seem to write themselves into a corner or lose steam some ways through. :/

That's Shining Inheritance. Yeah, the plot is pretty involved. You'd probably have to watch it from the start to properly get the family and economic dynamics running throughout the story.
@HMack: I get why they did it, but it still doesn't make sense — it was like they were just in a rush to wrap everything up. I figured they'd written themselves into a bad corner... ah well.
currently we're watching Jejoongwon (i think that's what it's called, it focuses on the introduction of western medicine to Korea). i'm not a huge huge fan of it, but my husband likes it. it's interesting how they've incorporated English through the doctors and some of the medical techniques, but y'know... with as illegal as impersonating a man was back then, these female protagonists sure tend to resort to it a lot, lol. :3

@theblackdragon: My all time favorite Korean drama is Green Rose. If you had to only watch one, that would be it. It has it all with plenty of WTF sprinkled throughout.
For a more lighthearted affair, check out My Lovely Sam Soon. I just found it on Hulu.

so... after Jejoongwon my husband went straight into Road Number One, which was more modern (Korean War), absolutely heartwrenching (great, though!), and afterward I was pretty drama'd out, so we took a break for a while. last month we continued on with Chilwoo Almighty (i didn't watch most of it because i was still burned out, but what i saw of it was okay — and pretty funny at times), then Tree with Deep Roots. that one was odd to watch because it concerns the creation of hangul, the Korean alphabet... it felt weird that so much conflict came from literacy. so political! it was really good though :3
at the moment we're in the middle of Ja Myung Go, and it is excellent. crazy queens, children who refuse to die, murder and intrigue and unrest and the best part is Mo Yanghae. she's such an awesome character and i love her to bits~ :3
@syko: i think after Road Number One i'd rather stick to dramas set in like ancient times and stuff, at least for right now. will certainly keep them in mind if i ever get back in the mood to try something more modern :3

Based on recommendation, I've started watching Padam Padam...it's pretty interesting so far.
@theblackdragon: I'll leave recommendations just in case you eventually get tired of the ancient setting. Have you encountered the Camry commercial yet? It plays at least once every drama episode I watch... it's hilarious though if you actually check out the website and watch them all in order, LMAO.
