Topic: Is The End of Gaming Consoles Coming?

This question seems to be lingering in the minds of many on the internet, recently. So much so that even God of War director David Jaffe gave an, admittedly wild, estimate that, in about 10 years, we won't be seeing new consoles as the next generation (the one Wii U is starting) will be the last.

My question to the people of Nintendo Life is this: are we nearing the end of game consoles? If so, why do you feel that way? Could it be because we are nearing what a lot of people are calling a "peak" in video game visuals? Could it be lack of consumer interest in gaming consoles? Or are game consoles still going to be here to stay for many generations to come?

I'm hoping the last thing, as I don't know what I'd do with all my spare time without gaming consoles.
In saying that, I can't see Nintendo not releasing another system after the Wii U, something would have to go horribly, horribly wrong.
I don't know about Sony and Microsoft though, as they make plenty of business elsewhere and could always easily leave the gaming market if it's not profitable for them.

The argument isn't that gaming in front of your TV is going away, guys. The point these people are making is that the industry will evolve into something new, and games consoles will become old technology - much like how the VCR is now old technology.

And yes, I happen to agree with that. The games industry is quite clearly moving away from the idea of boxes that you stick under your TV to play games on.

Only if the world really ends on 21st December this year, but what are the chances of that?

Video games died for good once, it'll happen again

Video game visuals peaking shouldn't have anything to do with it. If anything it would be because consoles aren't dedicated to gaming anymore. They check email, youtube, blue ray, MP3, internet browser--that's not a gaming console, that's a PC. Once you can't see a difference between your desktop and your Xbox, that's when console gaming's dead.

Video gaming consoles won't and shouldn't die. There will always be people who would prefer a console specifically designed for gaming and with sole other built in features and possibly even joysticks and button(something which DROIDs and iPhones don't have, over a tablet device such as an iPad or iPhone. I like iPhone, I actually rather like my iPod Touch, but I feel that's it's more of an all around device, doing a lot of things ok than a console such as the 3DS which does gaming, and it does it very good.

I only really care about handhelds anyways. <hugs 3DS>

Ok, true, but I was thinking of the 2 main smartphones right now. Also, I'm not necessarily going to buy a phone to play a game. I will buy an iPod Touch(actually no I won't, I'll get it for Christmas somehow)if I feel like mine is incredibly outdated. Whereas, I would totally buy a 3DS just for KIU alone. Yeah, I forgot the Xperia Play(altogether), but yes it does have buttons and such. Ah, and by outdated, I mean it's 5 years old or more and Apple isn't supporting it with system updates anymore, any it looks and works completely different from the newest iPod.

Whereas, I won't go go out to buy a new phone every 2 months because a new one came out, but I will buy a 3DS and Wii U and only have to get software updates to keep it going for a really long time.

Oh please... This again? I can see that one day it could happen, but for now just enjoy what you got.

I cant see this ever happening. Well atlesat not until TVs die. Parents will buy this stuff for the living rooms And kids.

Yep. There going to evolve until something like how the current t 360 positioning its self or a set top box. Consoles as we know them will die but, they will still play games among other things.
