It's late enough in the Wii U's lifespan that I'm definitely missing a proper 3D platformer on the system. Here's hoping for a new 3D Mario or something!

There's Sonic Lost World and Super Mario 3D World. And yes, SM3DW is a proper 3D platformer, you can move in 360 degrees, it's not top-down, and you can change the camera.
3D World being a 3D platformer is pretty disappointing if that's all we get for the generation. It wasn't as good as either galaxy game in terms of level design, in my opinion. yes you can move up and down, but you're still being pushed in one direction. With an arbitrary time limited.
Truthfully, I'd be all for a Mario game that's a combination of Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy. 64 for its not-exactly-so-linear and open worldish structure. Sunshine representing an odd-ball idea that's charming and intuitive. Galaxy representing new ways to play and vastly innovative mechanics.

3D Land/World have more in common with 2D Mario games in terms of overworld layout, level design, and overall feel. They're very clearly different beasts than 64, Sunshine, or Galaxy.

I won't say that 3D World isn't a proper 3D platformer, but it's definitely not the kind of Mario platformer people wanted to see. It's extremely similar to NSMB in gameplay and in tone, a sterilized linear platformer desperately clinging to nostalgia. When people say they want a "proper" 3D platformer, they mean they want to see a large scale exploration based Mario platformer along the lines of 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy. And yes, the Wii U needs this, that style of gameplay hasn't been done by anyone in the industry since Galaxy 2, it desperately needs a revival. It's going to be highly disappointing if the only platformers we see this gen are linear nostalgia fests, it's such a waste of potential for the genre.

Yeah this.
If you changed the name of the genres of "2D Platformer" and "3D Platformer" to "Apple" and "Banana" respectively, and asked people to classify 3D World into one of those new names, I'd bet a significant number of people would call Mario 3D World "Apple".
People are looking for a 3D platformer that has more traditional core aesthetics of the genre. Namely, free movement being used in a more open space, not to clear levels and reach a goal quickly, but to scour an area with verticality, find secrets, and solve puzzles.
So... Ryu is actually in Smash... But why? Besides his huge legacy... How did he get in? Last time Street Fighter touched a Nintendo platform was 3DS.
Is Mega Man any different? He's a video gaming icon. It makes perfect sense to me.
Getting so hyped now. Oddly really excited about Microsoft's event. They must feel pretty confident about new reveals if they're leaving Crackdown and Scalebound for Gamescom. We pretty much know there's a new Rare game coming, headed up by Gregg Mayles, and it really seems like Phil Spencer is trying to get them back to that early 360 era where it was all about the games.
Yup.. I'm honestly really angry about this. We were ONE day away. The fact that people feel the need to leak things like this and ruin the surprise for everybody pisses me off so much. Screw this.
@NintyMan The difference with Mega Man is there are no new games, the last games were Mega Man 9 and 10 which were both WiiWare games. The last Street Fighter game on Nintendo consoles was on 3DS 4 years ago where everything after has been "all but Nintendo consoles", makes me think something is happening at the digital event Street Fighter related even though it seems 5 is Sony exclusive.

I believe the term you're looking for is open-world. 3D Land/World aren't open world, but they are with out a doubt 3D platformers. You can't just change the definition of a 3D game to fit your needs, 3D Land/World are clearly 3D games. They even have 3D in the title.

No, Mario Galaxy isn't an open world game. A 3D Platformer doesn't have to be open world to follow those traditional core aesthetics.
I'm not saying 3D Land/World aren't 3D games. I'm just saying they play a lot more like 2D Platformers, and if the genre names were different, some people would probably classify them as such. The entire idea of the game is to run through a linear obstacle course as quickly as possible. It's just happening in 3D.
