Hmmm... i would have to go with Dragon Quest. All the Dragon Quest games are pretty good, but newer final fantasies are all about graphics, not gameplay. The older FF'S are better than the older Dragon Quest's tough.

I'll say Final Fantasy, solely because the only Dragon Quest games I've played enough of are a couple of side games (I played the gameboy version of Dragon Quest 1&2 once...) while I've played at least a dozen Final Fantasy games.
I honestly prefer those two side games to even the best Final fantasy though. (no offense to IV, VI, VII or Tactics series)
Let me see, one is just as unfriendly and tedious as the NES iterations, while the other is fresh and interesting with each new entry. For the uninitiated, that means Final Fantasy wins.
I like Dragon Quest more than Final Fantasy. I grew up with Dragonball Z so I'm a fan of Akira Toriyama's artwork. I haven't had much experience with final fantasy but it comes across as a little too serious for my tastes.
