A lot of gamers claim that even if Nintendo didn't exist, the industry would still be growing outside US making it to them that it would eventually be revived. Even further claiming that Sony is the one that made gaming at its finest.
I on the other hand think this is false because Nintendo's policies DID improve the marketing and did encourage devs to make great games.
Personally I would wish that Playstation series would be gone because of these fanboys freaking out every single gamer that Playstation the way of gaming. Wonder if Sony will realize that PS4 is the last they can possibly invest their work on.........
Sometimes it feels like Nintendo is the driving force behind the whole industry.
Many of nintendos "inventions" (in quotes because not all of them are their invention, but their use made it a standard) evolved and became an industry standard or inspired even better versions of it:
The NES brough home console gaming back to life if an easy to hook up and use system.
Zelda was the first ever home console game to utilise battery backup saves
The SNES controller layout became a general controller template
The N64s multi function slot in the back probably inspired the dreamcasts controller, and made the then optional rumble pack a standard for upcomming controllers.
The N64 made analog Stick a standard
The GameCube made analog shoulder triggers a standard for everyone but nintendo themselfes (oh the irony But these things are hardly needed anyways)
The Wii inspired many motion controll aplications like sonys blatant copy in form of the PS Move and microsofts kinect.
The WiiU inspired second screen adaptations for newer consoles, although they use third party devices and therefore, kinda miss the target with it.
And thats just the home console market. But since they never had any real competition on the handheld market, ill leave it out for now.
Come on, there's no doubt that they did revive the industry. Wether it would return if they hadn't entered the business, however, is a whole different question(and... I still can't see gaming just staying dead after the crash forever, in a hypothetical universe someone would have picked it up eventually in a way that would make it popular again).
But I don't get one thing. Shouldn't Nintendo sue Sony for using their ideas like rumble pak and save feature? Why do people still think Nintendo didn't do much in gaming?
And people still think that DS and Wii won through sheer luck. Really???

about the DS and Wii that's because of hardware. people think that more RAM and a faster CPU can make better games but what makes games good are the creative minds of the developers, of course, a strong hardware allows more impressive stuff and easier techniques to make the games but that's not always better(look at SOME indie games for high end PCs or stronger consoles they bleed RAM and processing like crazy, sometimes even more than AAA games because the developers go wild with more power and forget about efficiency, though being an efficiency freak is also bad, maybe even worse) and all that comes either at a higher cost(for companies with dedicated gaming machines that have the production cost) or filled with incompatibilities and excessive shovelware(mobile devices and, to a kinda smaller extent, PC gaming)

Yes. If it weren't for Nintendo, video gaming would be a lost cause. It is possible another company like Sony would have made the plunge but it's hard to say.

Well they did revive the gaming industry in NA after the crash of 83 that can't be denied, however I am sure that if they didn't someone else would have it just would have taken longer thats all. Take a look at PC gaming and how far it has come. If Nintendo didn't revive the market Apple or Microsoft more then likely would have it just would be PC gaming.

I just wanna add one thing and you can tell all the sony fanboys who give you grief this... Without Nintendo the playstation brand would not exist. I don't know if you know but Nintendo reached out to sony on making a CD add on for the SNES and the relationship fell apart and sony used the expertise they learned from Nintendo to make the original playstation. So yes without Nintendo sony wouldn't have saved the industry maybe some hypothetical company that doesn't exist could've done the same but we will never know
in the end videogames would still exist. they'd be different or at least have different focuses, no one can tell for sure, maybe in an alternative dimension where Nintendo didn't save the industry, western players got sick of shooters in the year 2000 and platformers became the "dudebro gaming", maybe casual games never existed or maybe they took over the market, maybe arcades were more popular than having a personal gaming machine. no one can tell for sure. but I'd love to make a thread about theories of what would have happened(maybe later) I love talking about parallel possibilities(unless the talk is overrun by dumb pessimistic opinions of people who call themselves "realistic")

That's true, but Nintendo essentially screwed Sony. Nintendo asked Sony to make the SNES CD add-on but later got cold feet because the contract favoured Sony. Nintendo then made a similar deal with Philips... all WITHOUT telling Sony. Hate Sony all you want, but signing a contract with a company then secretly signing another contract with a competitor is unprofessional. Nintendo essentially created its own competitor.
Hey I'm not hating on sony just trying to point out that while sony have moved on expanded the market they had a massive helping hand from Nintendo in the beginning. I know that Nintendo as a company was arrogant and cocky back in their hayday which can explain to a degree the frosty business relationship which they still suffer from.
There would be no Sony without Nintendo actually. If not Nintendo, then Sega would do it. Apple was no chance in hell, same with MS. Apple actually created a console and it's so obscure and atrocious that even hipsters don't know it actually exists.
But the fact is, Nintendo came in and made video games (home console of course), profitable again, so yeah, they revived the industry.
Yes, Nintendo did save the industry. Atari's E.T. was the omen that symbolize the death of video games for many people. Thankfully, Nintendo made sure that all games were top notch (Nintendo's Seal of Quality was born). I mean come on, Nintendo was the one who had the balls to prove all the naysayers that video games was still alive, Nintendo took that chance and was greatly rewarded with the NES. And without Nintendo, Sony won't have the Playstation brand.

Didn't the contract stated that Sony would be able to control all titles of the SNES CD-ROM?
Yes, Sony had complete control. Makes you wonder why Nintendo signed the contract in the first place.
Better yet, I'd like to know who was the one reading the contract in the first place. -_-
Oh lord, why even ask this on this site? (Rhetorical, I know why.)
Nobody knows what would have happened in any hypothetical situation, and video games would have been on the PC regardless. This thread is just an opportunity for people to thank their messiah of gaming - and apparently to hate on Sony for whatever reason.
Anyone that claims to know how actions decades ago affect the world today is off their rocker.
Well, guys, it doesn't really matter what "would have happened", the fact remains that Nintendo did pull the industry out of the crash. Who knows what would have happened if Nintendo hadn't created the NES - but that doesn't matter because they did. Everything that happened past that was a direct result of it - for better or for worse.

well, most of the negative comments where either about what in fact happened or about sony. so I think the we should make a "no bashing any company" rule at least in this type of thread so no war starts(or not it's fun to see the chaos the happens because of a few words in a screen that are badmouthing a company that someone likes)

@GuSilverFlame: Yeah. What I'm saying is that, this should just come down to facts - and the fact is that it was Nintendo who took the initiative and pulled the industry out of the crash - opinions on Sony of all things doesn't apply to this at all... I suppose it's okay to speculate on what might have happened if Nintendo hadn't decided to make a home console, but some of the things people have said on the matter are baffling... So anyway, yes, you're definitely right!
