but with all joking aside, i wanted to tell everyone something...
i help take care of my dad these days. hes 65 now.
i cant get him sick if i were to catch the virus being as handsome as i am, even i am not 100% safe.
therefore me and my dad have made the decision that i take a 3 month leave of absence from my job.
ive been hanging out on this site for over 10 years now, so i decided to share this info.
catch me inside.

@ogo79 Yeah, I'm nervous about my parents too. Near 80 years old. I guess I'm going to have to grocery shop for them.
Ever since the mandatory mask order came out in PA last weekend, the quarantine has started to stress me. Leaving the house now feels confining with the mask order.

i feel ya.
the gloves and masks make me get hot and sweaty believe it or not.
combining that with my nervousness in general, and the nervousness with whats going on with the panic in the stores, its not the same grocery trip as it once was. not for now anyways. im predicting 3 months for this to die down. or until they are satisfied with the amount of human decreasion for this virus to disappear like nothing ever happened
i shop for my dad as well, i sent 2 huge bottles of hand sanitizer to my grandmother out of city on top of that. that takes a trip to the post office...where those employees are getting infected as well.
the things we do for our parents=the things they once done for you and i.
stay safe and keep in touch.
we gotta be ready

Welp my uncle just tested positive and is showing symptoms. Since he is in his late 70s I am am extra concerned but also furious. So he abides by the stay at home order EXCEPT he kept going to church. I just wanna scream or shake him or something.

@Octane All I read from that quote is some guy's sentence being needlessly postponed, making the torture/agony of having to wait on your own demise even longer. As I said, I'm all for removing certain individuals from society on a permanent basis, depending on the crime(s), but I don't relish the thought of seeing them suffer any longer than necessary. In that respect, no sentence or punishment will ever be good enough anyway, compared to what the family of the victim(s) have to go through for the rest of their lives...
But let's get back on topic.
Fortunately, there's a slow rise in good news in our little country of residence, so that's good. Sadly, though, that news is kind of mitigated by lunatic conspiracy theorists setting fire to 5G masts, because they think they are part of a government plot to disguise their negative effects as the Corona virus.
I hope all of them get caught, drawn and quartered. The world is in dire need of less idiots...
@Ryu_Niiyama Sorry to hear about your uncle. I hope his infection is mild.
A lot of people don't seem to understand that if you keep exposing yourself in any social settings, then you're not really safe. JUST going to church is still a massive risk.
My own 70-year-old mother with heart and lung issues keeps going out to the store when it's not necessary. It's very frustrating.
i have access to things that are needed. i have a whole case of sanitizer as far as that goes.
they were for my grandma and dad. i also have a lot of toilet paper, food, bath soap, laundry soap, cases of beer and ammunition for the lacking would be looters. that doesnt work in texas trust me lol

@Ryu_Niiyama Man, I hope your uncle will be okay. People in that age group are especially at risk. I ran across an article the other day about how older adults are the new ones needing babysat in a time like this, to the chagrin of their children. It's a reversal of roles in many ways.
Wow, some of the earlier posts in this thread have not aged well. And I guess a few of the more recent ones haven't either surprisingly. I think one things for clear, those with backgrounds in Maths are a tad quicker to respond. When early on I heard there was around 30% growth in cases per day, the majority of cases were asymptomatic and even those who show symptoms are carriers for at least a week before? Oh there are 10 confirmed cases? What you really mean is there are ~100 and in a week there'll be ~600.
Yeah, I started to work from home well before I was forced to.....
The whole "flat curve thing" is a misnomer to begin with given that the whole population isn't tested (and can't be repeatedly tested forever anyway). It's the wrong metric. We don't know how many infections there are, only how many people seek medical attention and include getting tested. The number I think that matters more is getting a handle on what percentage of infections lead to hospitalization and where the hospitalization numbers are.
This is true... but these are not independent variables. There are about three variables you throw into the equation to get the number of hospital beds you will need. The number people who have it now, the infection growth rate and the number of infected who need a hospital bed. Basically every day this function runs:
Number of beds needed today = Yesterday's infected x Growth Rate x Infected that need beds
You're talking about that third number and how it relates to the number of beds needed today. This number does matter but it fades into almost nothing when compared to the impact of the growth rate. To make a point of this, here's a graph with two variables H and R. H represents the rate of hospitalisation and R represents the rate of infection. Both of these lines start with infected as 1 (Y axis) at day 0 (X axis). The blue line has a very high hospitalisation rate but with an infection rate similar to where a lot of countries are now "flattening the curve". The red line has a relatively low hospitalisation rate with a higher rate of infection at ~1.1 (note that COVID-19 with no social distancing was higher than this)
The R, i.e. the rate of infection, impacts the number in hospital far more than the H, rate of hospitalisation. Going back to COVID-19 I'd argue that, if anything, the low rate of hospitalisation is a large part of the reason why the R is so high. You want an "R" bellow 1. From what I've read it was as high as 1.5 in some areas but most places it was sitting at 1.2, 1.3. Currently it's down to around 0.85 in Australia although in the US it's still at ~1.05 last I read and in places like Brazil it's still over 1.1.
Not to knock religion or anything but when you are so convinced of your own faith that you ignore science and logic all together there's is definitely a problem. It's like those parents you hear about who let their child with cancer die because they think praying overrides any medical treatment or medicine. I heard a pastor somewhere got arrested for trying to hold church services despite the stay at home order. Like simply being at church somehow shields you from any possibility of infection. Come on people!

@ThanosReXXX Did you watch the video? I'd argue that the first and third paragraph of the quote I posted are more important. 1. alcohol makes it easier to insert a needle; 2. it allows the executioners to think of themselves as professionals; and lastly, in case something gets delayed or changed last minute, you don't have to deal with the effects of an unsanitised medical procedure on top of it. That was the take-home message.
Nope. Restaurants still ain't letting no one in and the stay home order hasn't been lifted. From what i can tell no one seems to care. I saw several people hanging out at a pond fishing like they had no clue about what's going on.
Did you guys hear about the dad arrested for throwing a ball around with his daughter in an empty park? Yeah the cops apparently grabbed the guy and handcuffed him in front of the kid. They mean business!
He was later released though. Probably didn't want false arrest charges. It's nuts!
@Octane "That was the take-home message"
And a very useless one, far as I'm concerned. Executioners are just that: executioners. They have to have the right amount of knowledge to perform their jobs, obviously, but they aren't medical professionals, and they shouldn't be deluding themselves into thinking otherwise. And if they can't handle the job because of it, then they aren't the right person for the job, period.
But as I already suggested earlier, let's get back (and stay back) on topic. I've said all I wanted to say about this anyway, and I don't want to be the guy that keeps this irrelevant part of the discussion going.
