@CanisWolfred Lol really? The people at my school and at YouTube really prefer the Studio Deen adaptation... Glass Reflection is one of the YouTubers who did a video defending Deen.

Huh. And everyone I happened to talked to treated the Ufotable version as the savior of the series, since it was much more true to the original source material, had WAY better animation (then again, Studio Deen's reputation for lazy hack-job animation doesn't exactly set a high bar, yet Ufotable still insisted on pole-vaulting over the freakin' moon).
But this isn't a hill I'd die trying to protect or anything. TV shows are such a subjective experience that everyone comes out with a slightly different takeaway, and personally...I don't think the story is good at its core, so I didn't enjoy any version...
Currently rewatching The Ryoko Show Tenchi Muyo! (OVA) and I'm having a good time. I forgot how pretty and imaginative this series is, despite it not giving a lot of juicy details about its world.
Oh, and I just powered through Sword Art Online: Abridged. I don't normally endorse this stuff, but it was legitimately better at telling the story of SOA than the original anime despite it being a parody. Heck, their version of the villain's motivations made a lot more sense. Granted, this is this is all coming from low standards, anyways - even the better parts of SAO doesn't exactly hold up under scrutiny, from what I've seen. Still, there's lot of heart in it, certainly better than the usual Youtube schlock I've encountered. Worst part is that the voice actor(?) for Kirito has a scratchy voice, which ironically sells Kirito's "I'm a loser in real life, but a demi-god in this game" schtick better than his generic bishi art ever could.
@CanisWolfred, it's been awhile since I've watched it, but yeah, Tenchi Muyo! is pretty great, and is still the best harem out there, because it actually focuses on a story & has some good action, from what I remember. Seems like the harem genre has sort of devolved since then (even Tenchi's own spin-offs).
Any word on the 4th OVA? I think it released last year in Japan, but the only thing I can find that proves it's existence is it's OP on YouTube.

Netflix released trailers for four anime they're acquiring on YouTube (though only one, possibly two looks interesting to me), but what I don't get is that EVERY single comment is whine about the shows not being simulcast.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that ultimately a good thing? If they're waiting a few months to put it up, doesn't that mean they're getting the home release versions, which are usually superior to the broadcast versions (which is what simulcasts are, if I'm not wrong).
I'm not against simulcasts by any means, but if Netflix can only get one version of a show, wouldn't you want it to be the best possible version? No one ever seems to bring it up though.
I'm not saying anime on Netflix is perfect (such as Netflix splitting up one season into two for their own purposes, or Funimation shafting them on episode count), but when did simulcasts become the be all end all?

Well the obvious problem is that if people want to watch a new anime...they're gonna avoid Netflix to watch it. If they can wait...this doesn't affect them anyway.
The fact that I've heard way less about LWA, despite already being an established thing, compared to Kiznaiver, also says quite a bit of how much Netflix is "helping" these anime.
Interesting thoughts. Maybe this could be fixed in the future if Netflix would simulcast the series (the broadcast version), so people who chase the newest stuff can be satisfied, then replace it with the home version once it's available that way people who want to watch the best version (or even just watch it dubbed, which isn't much of a thing with simulcasts) get what they want too (this could even lead to a second viewing by people who watched, and liked the simulcast version, who would come back for the better experience).
For me personally, I tried following the newest shows for a few seasons, and while there were a few shows I liked, I ultimately found it tiresome. I honestly don't know how people do it unless they ONLY watch anime. Guess I'm just a bit more laid back than the typical anime fan, taking a "if I haven't seen it, it's new to me" approach, and like being able to watch a show at my own pace, not worring about keeping up with the crowd, and knowing I won't have to deal with the rough animation & potential broadcast censorship of the simulcast versions.

This is a valid point and all but I guess I've not chosen the wrong series because AFAIK, none of the series I've seen when airing have had this issue. Probably helps that I avoid most action simulcasts thanks to the inevitability of Toonami airing some of them.
And yeah I would never try to follow AN ENTIRE or even the majority of an anime season. Trying to keep up with like 20+ shows just for anime sounds exhausting.
Pretty sure the only differences I've seen in broadcast vs. Home Release in anything after 2012 was just censorship for certain risque/violent shows in the broadcast versions. Sure, there might still be cases of stuff getting cleaned up later, but I have yet to see any evidence of that.

I tried this once, and in a fairly strong season, too, yet it was still an awful experience. I quickly had to whittle it down to two shows, one of which only had 5-minute episodes...
Hey everyone! It's been a while (I seem to always take long hiatuses from here lol) - I can't believe it's now been over 4 years from when I really started to get into anime.
Since I've last visited I completed Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 (really enjoyed it - I've wanted to break into the Gundam franchise for a long time & now I've done that lol. Going to get around to Zeta eventually) and have watched some old OVAs like Gunsmith Cats. I've fallen a bit out of touch with anime from time to time but I'm still closely following Studio Trigger. Little Witch Academia is utterly fantastic - as expected from Yoh Yoshinari - and I'm not quite done with it yet. Still have a few old Gainax shows I've been meaning to get to too like Nadia - FLCL - Diebuster - Kare Kano - and a few others. So yeah that's what I've been up to lol.
A stray thought about mecha - I really really love hand-drawn mecha from some of the classic shows I've seen & heard about and really prefer them to the modern CGI mecha. I mean on one hand CGI makes a lot of sense - you can still have intricately detailed mecha models without having to redraw it every time or wind-up re-using the same animations for different scenes. It's just a shame tho because - from a purely aesthetic perspective - CGI mecha are really just really far less appealing to me than drawn ones. Just a loose thought - mecha isn't my favorite genre or anything - nor one I'm extremely passionate about - but I'd be lying if I said I didn't care a fair bit about them as an anime fan & since several of my favorite shows happen to be mecha series.
Also thought I'd share this cool new Digibro video -
Anime watching: Mobile Suit Gundam, Lupin III, & Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable

Also, I agree with you about the mecha designs. I mean, while there have been a lot of strange designs over the years, the mecha genre started out by making giant robots seem believable, yet nowadays, they keep trying to see how many lines and facets they can fit on a single object while still calling it a bipedal machine...you get some really funky-looking things sometimes. I loved the designs in Aldnoah.Zero, for instance - those looked like machines that the military might someday consider, while still being sleek enough to be visually appealing and therefore sell toys. Not to mention it seems like whenever a mech is on-screen, they usually have this weird, glossy texture to them that doesn't really blend in with the rest of the animation - people have been complaining about this since the mid 2000's, yet they still haven't done anything about it.
Summer 2016 was terrible. Maybe i should start sniffing used pantsus while thinking of my imaginery underage sister to understand the appeal of many of the shows. I think i just realised that i never was the target group of modern anime.
But at least Saiki was really cool. Well off to the fall season.

This is why I don't blindly go into shows for the most part. I try to at least get a good idea of what people actually like, and what makes it work. That being said...
I started to be much more selective a while ago. Your method aint bad but for me thats already too much work which those shows aint worth . The kind of shows that annoy me are actually pretty easy to spot and avoid. Tags are often enough. I just wish there would be more stuff for me.
@Tsurii Kotaku lists jojo as spring anime. But yes thats actually my kind of anime. I did praise mob psycho 100 a page back. Like i said i only enjoyed saiki and mob. The rest is still a terrible season for me.
