There's nothing that could be said in a DM that couldn't be said in a comment section or forum. If someone wants to harass someone, they're gonna do so regardless.
It's not like DMs would be held secret from moderation. Ppl would be held to the same repercussions as if posting anywhere else on the site.
In fact, before opening a direct communication with someone, the site could pop up a message reminding users that anything they say will be held to the same standards of conduct as public posts elsewhere on the site. And again, users wouldn't have to accept the chat invite. If someone sees a user requesting a chat they don't know, they can deny it. Meaning that person CANNOT send harassing messages privately (and even if they did it could be reported just like a harassing message in a forum or comment section).
That puts the power in the hands of the member- it's up to them if they want to accept a message invite. That way if ppl are talking in a forum and say hey, let's discuss further details privately, they can do so, and that person will expect the invite. Otherwise they can decline. Optionally, after 24 hrs the acceptance could expire and any request to chat must be accepted again.
So that's 3 reasons why it wouldn't be an issue.
Anyone who wishes not to use the system wouldn't have to, and since any new lines of communication would first require your authorization to accept their message invite, you could simply not do so. Furthermore, the site could provide a global option to "auto-reject chat invites", "auto-accept chat invites", or "manually approved chat invites", with "auto-reject" activated by default. This would provide an opt-in system, with the user having full control.
Another option would be to implement a Friend system, where you can tag other members as "Friends" and they can tag you back. And then only allow PMs between mutual friends. This could also be enhanced by still requiring a chat invitation to be accepted before messages are allowed to be posted, adding two layers of protection.
In fact, that might be the best solution as it automatically prevents spam messages and harassment, as anyone who is a mutual friend is not going to be someone trying to harass. There ya go. Problem solved.
edit
This is good. I want you guys to try and poke holes in this idea. Because it would need to be robust and fool-proof before potential implementation. Throw any other objections you have forward. Let's see if there are viable solutions to those objections or not.
Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)
They pierced My hands and feet
Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)
He was pierced for our transgressions
Zachariah 12:10 (500 yrs before Christ)
They will look on Me whom they pierced
I wouldn't mind a private messaging system, even if there has to be a friends system in place to avoid spam (meaning both parties have to follow each other). I get it's easier to use Discord, but take my situation, I don't want Discord friends requests from just anyone, I feel more comfortable giving that info to the people I trust in private. Same with friend codes, etc, I rather do that in a PM, rather than have it posted in a friend code thread for all to see and send me requests.
At least that's how I'm feeling about this anyway.

@JaxonH I do like the friend system idea, as that if they aren't on your friend list, they can't PM you. I can honestly say that would keep spammers from spamming PMs

Perhaps there could be invitation-only private threads as a stand-in for PMs. Admins (not mods) could still access and moderate them if needed as usual, but they would be invisible for anyone else not invited.
@JaxonH Suggestion #1 Private Messages - I think everyone else has answered for me there are many drawbacks to them and only a few positives, for the reasons outlined is basically why we've never done it. It seems unlikely we'll ever add it, but if we did it would have some heavy restrictions.
Suggestion #2 Badges - I do like this; whether or not we'll get around to it is another matter, but consider it noted for future reference
@antdickens
Thanks. Your consideration is about all I can ask for.
I understand there are real concerns and drawbacks to PMs. My petition is not to implement something with said drawbacks, but to implement something only if we can agree on robust solutions that address those concerns in a satisfactory manner. If the concerns aren't addressed, of course it shouldn't be implemented. All I ask is... if we can find solutions that could make it work (restrictions are obviously expected), that you at least consider it and weigh its viability.

I feel like adding that could become a bit of a problem in the forums setting… Suddenly you'd have people posting only for the validation like its reddit karma, or developing an air of superiority over people with less liked opinions.

well, I use reddit and can understand what you're talking about... 🤔
maybe that can be countered if no one can see the grand total of likes of a profile in the first place?
tons of forums have this feature now.
@markmarkmark@Eel yeah, I'm not a huge fan of them in a forum setting, so I don't think we'll be adding 'reactions' like that to the forum, but thanks for the suggestion.
I don’t seems to be able to edit my profile! I tried to edit my signature (it’s getting a bit old) but was greeting with the message, “ The following problems were found with this form:” in a red box with no actual problems listed. Even if I leave the contents of my profile as they are as hit ‘save’ I get the same error message. Has anyone else experienced this?
Also, I have a question. Why is necro posting/bumping so looked down upon? I get that it can clutter up forums if old topic are replied to, but what if there is something that should be said or someone has the same problem. What if it's a game topic that hasn't had to reply for a while? Are we supposed to make a new topic? Like, there is this GBA vs. DS thread and I am unsure about whether I will get a GBA or DS and I want to talk about that. (If I get one) Should I make my own topic or try to find a topic it could fit on? Also, this is me adding later, but the thread is archived so I can't post in the topic. How long of a gap on posting is a necro post?
@arnoldfranklin I second this one, for better clarification. Looking at the Community Rules...
Do not create duplicate topics; Before you start a topic, perform a search to see if the question or topic you wish to create has been made before. If it has, post in the topic that already exists. Duplicate topics will be closed.
Let's say I played an older game, I find a thread and post in it, then it gets locked for necroposting. Yet the rules state to post in an existing thread, yet it would get locked. It would be nice to have some clarification when it's ok to make a new thread on a topic, vs. when to post in an existing one.
Keep in mind, this is an example that came to mind, I tend to avoid posting in older threads unless a game has an established thread.
I can understand larger threads, like the Asphalt 9 thread as it has a lot of posts. I would be nice to have clarification on this, or even an update to the rule to acknowledge the time length..
