@arnoldfranklin Yeah, it says post in an existing thread, if I happen to post in a thread for a game that hasn't had activity in years or so, would it count as such?

I think it might be a rule that may need some updating. Since I see others sometimes post in existing threads, and they get locked for necroposting, even though the rules say to post in an existing thread.

Maybe some clarification might be good.

I believe any thread that hasn't been posted in 6 months or more is considered a dead thread and by posting in those it's considered necroposting at least that's my understanding.

@Tasuki But some games aren’t talked about for some time, and if it’s talked about again the person is to make a whole other thread, then again, six months is more then enough for someone to post something, so it’s actually a pretty good idea.

@Snatcher I have had threads locked for being duplicate threads, and have had threads locked for Necroposting. However the ones that were locked for Necroposting the last response was 6 months or older and was told by a Mod of the site that if it's been six months or more since the last post make a new one. So I guess that's the way.

When the thread is “the main discussion thread” about a game in specific, it could go either way.

People will usually continue using the same discussion thread even if it has been inactive for a long time, particularly if it’s an evergreen or popular game, the thread can usually remain relevant even after a long time.

However if a new one is created, and nobody brings up the old thread, then that’s fine too. The forums are very self-moderating in that way, most of the time the decision on what to do in those cases ends up based on what the users in the thread(s) say.

@Eel Thank you for the clarification. I do hope there could be an addition to the rules mentioning it, I can't help but wonder how many people post in an existing thread, following the rules, only to have it locked for following a rule.

Would be great if this clarification was on the community rules page so people who follow them are aware what's ok and what's not in regards to posting in older threads.

I think the editorial needs to better review articles before they get posted, case in point this article

https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2022/10/random-after-three-...

And as you can see from the comments alone I am not the only person who'd doesn't feel this is news or even article worthy of this site.

The main reason I came to this site was for its news and reviews but this article is below the standards of this site. Sure if this was a Minecraft Fansite maybe but even then. Maybe if it was an interview with the guy ok but to say hey it's a person under the mask, of course it's a person what else could it be? What next an article that it's a person under the Easter Bunny costume at my local Mall? That the clown standing on the corner with an advertisement sign is actually a person with make-up?

To be clear this isn't a dig at the writer or their work, but maybe just something that shouldn't be posted as Big News. I get it there are slow news days and you guys probably have to meet a quota of articles a day or something but please let's not have this site go down the gaming tabloid route.

I hope you guys take this as constructive criticism but lately it seems anything that anyone speaks against the site it's met with the staff usually locking he thread or ignoring the the post all together rather then fixing the problem.

Thank you for your time.

@Tasuki I completely agree with you.

I thought that article was out of place on a Nintendo site, all he did was reveal his face. Heck this site didn't even cover Technoblade's passing (that is also a non-Nintendo thing) which I think is a bit of a bigger deal.

@Antdickens Why do users that break the rules posting adverts/spam get to keep their links or videos in their posts? Ever since June, or around when there were changes to moderators abilities, and DreamlandGem joined, prohibited adverts in the forums often don't get their links, embedded videos removed. It looks like NL is letting spammers get away with spamming the forum.

Have the rules changed? I still see the same moderators around, but it seems like they lost he ability to remove spam/adverts. Is something broken? (If Eel goofed, forgive me. Eel has always done a great job. I'm not pointing the finger at Eel<3)

Example. Blatant advert and locked thread but their embeded video remains.

@WoomyNNYes I noticed that too. It's odd really, that the reasons that I really liked Nintendolife over say sites like IGN over years, strong stance on spammers flooding the forums, non click bait articles etc. That it seems they just don't care about those things anymore and just want to be another IGN. It's actually really sad to see the site go that route.

@Tasuki For good or bad, Minecraft is such a huge game that it has it's own tag in NintendoLife even though it is only tangentially related to Nintendo and the site often reports on some of the main Minecraft-related topics. Is the topic of this article important enough? I wouldn't have thought so but since half the game sites in existence plus Forbes magazine reported on it today, I don't blame NintendoLife; whether something should be big news or not is sometimes different than whether it is. They also reported on Minecraft and NFTs awhile back. The fact that they tagged this article random is to me a warning that it isn't really game-related. Overall it's easy enough to not read the article and I guess they decided enough Minecraft fans inhabit the site that they need to report on things like this.

I agree that some of the off-topic articles feel a little unmoderated sometimes but I suspect this article was specifically decided on by the editorial staff.

@Tasuki That's an idea for the site "Don't be like IGN".

@WoomyNNYes @Tasuki looks like there were a couple recently that slipped through the net; it still remains our best practice to remove links/embeds from any topics we deem as spam, if not remove the thread altogether (this usually happens when the account is banned and a true spammer, rather than just someone who didn't read the rules before posting).

We've been back over any locked topics from the past year and checked that all links/embeds that fall into that category are removed — and to be fair there were only a couple more.

As always, please report threads/comments as spam, and we'll tidy up as usual. Thanks!

I noticed recently that I was unable to post a link in a comment on an article.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2022/09/cuphead-is-finally-...
When I would include a link to the Cuphead listing on GAME UK's website, the link would not be visible even though the BBCode tags were evident when editing the comment.

Was this a recent policy change to hide links to combat spam?
I was still able to communicate the important point about the listing, but not being able to share the link was less convenient.

@antdickens
Sure thing, I've edited the comment to re-insert the link.
Links still get wrapped in [url.external] tags like before, but weren't visible in the comment on the article.

Note that since I posted the comment, it actually looks like GAME UK removed the listing for Cuphead from their site, but it's the same link I was trying to use before.

The link is also failing to display in this post.

It looks like my adblocker was the culprit.
Untitled

Upon disabling the ad blocker, the link would render.
It looks to be a feature of ublock origin I was unaware of, I've never seen an ad blocker outright remove clickable links from a webpage in viewport before.
This would be because Nintendolife automatically converts certain links into affiliate links like click synergy.

My bad, I'll keep the adblocker disabled, I used to have it running for performance reasons on a struggling laptop, but I no longer have that issue since changing to a new laptop.

Personally I enjoy a lot of the 'Random' articles. It's nice to read about some things that are not big news but just fun little things that are going on. Now I don't care about that Minecraft guy and the article about his face does seem slightly out of place here, but presumably some people here will be interested in it so I don't have a problem with it being posted. I just didn't click on it and moved on with my day. If every other article was just about YouTube drama I'd feel differently, but it's easy enough to just ignore the occasional article you don't want to read.
