@JaxonH I'd like to see both of those suggestions happen.

Well that solidifies it, then. We officially have backing from Kermit the Frog. Ya kinda have to seriously consider it now 😀

Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)
They pierced My hands and feet
Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)
He was pierced for our transgressions
Zachariah 12:10 (500 yrs before Christ)
They will look on Me whom they pierced

I for one hope PMs are never implemented. I use to visit another gaming site and it had PMs and all that would happen is spammers would fill up the inbox. There's already other places that I feel users can PM each other on, Facebook, Discord, Twitter, Backloggery etc. without needing them on NintendoLife, but that's just my opinion.

@Snatcher no problem. I remember how to do it, like riding a bike.

I probably wouldn't use PMs myself but I can see why they would be useful. To prevent spam, maybe they could only be available to accounts that are at least a month old and have made a certain number of posts on the forum.

Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music

I think PMs would be a really awful idea for the forums. Yes it would have its benefits like the situation regarding NSO friends contacting each other but much like a proper voice chat and messaging system for consoles, it would be abused to hell with those people ruining the experience for everyone else.

I'm not just talking about spambots here but you also have the situation about stuff like hate messages. A big argument in the article comments section about some harmless but unpopular opinion of games (e.g. "The Last of Us Part 1 is worth it" or "All M rated games are terrible") could turn into something a lot worse with the existence of a PM system. Meanwhile with the current system the argument fizzles out either by a mod deleting comments or the use of the "Ignore" button.

I highly second what @Grumblevolcano says, PM's could lead to people getting away with saying the worst possible stuff to others all over an argument that would otherwise naturally fizzle out. I worry it would end up turning into those kinds of Xbox console messages memes that you see all over the place where people say the worst kind of stuff basically without any repurcussions. The idea is appreciated but I think it would lead to more problems than anything else.

@Fizza @Grumblevolcano
These are legitimate concerns, but they are concerns that have already been overcome on other sites. And I think if the model can work elsewhere, it can work here too. It's just a matter of being smart about how it's implemented.

For example, all messages could first require a chat request. If someone doesn't want to talk to the other person, they can ignore or refuse it. Only after accepting can messages be posted.

It could also be a privilege only afforded to those who frequent the forums with a certain number of posts. Passers by who just troll article comments wouldn't have access.

Ignored and blocked users can't message each other, and inappropriate messages can always be reported. So no @Fizza people would not be able to get away with saying things without repercussions. Absolutely not.

There are many ways to prevent and mitigate those types of issues.

edit
To give an example- I've been on reddit for 6 or 7 years. They have far more posting members than this site, and I've gotten into way more disagreements there.

And yet, in all those 7 years, I can only think of one time someone messaged me with an inflammatory message. And it was because they ran across an old post of mine from years back. And even then, while they were a bit of a jerk, all they said was "ha, you were wrong"

What if people were limited to what you could say in a PM? Like a small word limit, like 100 or 50.

For the above reason Fizza and Grumblvolcano said and the fact so many places like Twitter, Facebook, Discord, Backloggery has a PM system I don't see why NL needs one.

@Tasuki your right, maybe it's not such a good idea then?

Yeah, private messages would be tough to implement on a consistent basis here. Best solution is to use established DM systems like Discord, which a number of users here already use.

@WoomyNNYes PM's and DM's just in case you were wondering is likely the same thing too.
PM is private message, and DM is direct message. 😉

@Kermit1 People can still spam, harrass other users with a limit.

yeah, I agree with this, with emoji nowadays, you can definitely harrass people with just even three. lol.

or single worded profanities.😑

although a filter system could take care of that, but I've seen enough game chats to know there are workarounds... 😑

discord could very well be a thing instead anyway...
