I know it's been out over a year, but I only just got it. If anyone wants to be friends, my code is 1977-8426-4026. I don't need rescuing at the moment (I've barely started -- just got to the mines) but figured I'd scout the boards in advance in case I do need a rescue later (or if anyone else does).
Also, to those who've played this, how does it compare to the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series or other MD series? I went with Shiren since it's the only original MD series and is slightly less embarrassing to play, haha. But if Pokemon (or another series -- I don't know what other Mystery games there are, but I heard there are others) has better game play, I'll need to look into that. As it is, I just chose this one for the more appealing theme.
Anyway, I think the game is amazing. It doesn't complicate the classic Rogue formula much (at least so far), but every little thing it adds is a good touch, and the whole "rescue" concept is super neat. I almost want to lose just to try it out, haha. I quite like the graphics, too, but as someone who plays Rogue in ASCII regularly, I am obviously easy to please.
If you've played Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, look it up. It's the same basic formula, and this came long before the Pokemon version (it's an SNES remake). If you haven't played the Pokemon version, well, look into it! Really simple and addictive game design up in here. I found Shiren for $15, which for a cheap skate like me is awesome.
Hey Adam, I actually do own Shiren the Wanderer and I consider myself a pretty big fan of the game! I haven't played it in a while so I'm a bit rusty. I think I'll dig my copy out and start playing it again! I never could find anyone to play this game with. I could post my friend code if you want it. I was really impressed by this game but not very many people actually played it! I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying it! If you are looking for another rogue-like game, I would recommend Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon. It is not as difficult as Shiren but I happened to enjoy that one quite a bit too!
I almost got Chocobo's Dungeon, too. Like Pokemon, I worried that the theme would just feel ill-suited to a rogue-like experience, so I changed my mind as I was about to check out. I do want to try it though because I prefer playing games on a big screen. I'll have to wait until I tire of Shiren first, and who knows how long that'll be!
If you feel like digging up your friend code, sure. I've never done this rescue thing. Seems like a cool way to take a traditionally single-player experience and make it, in a sense, multi-player. I could actually use a rescue right now. Ambushed by a rock-throwing pig and a tank, and for some reason I thought I could take them. >.<
I could just restart though. Not like I'm particularly far. I'm just sad that the girl following me died because I made her beat up everyone for me, haha. Does she come back after you die, or just Shiren? I don't think I can live without her.
Adam, my friend code on Shiren is 4511 8747 4731. I got your friend code written down. Send me a rescue request and I'll come help you out! Don't worry about dying in this game because that girl does come back when you start over. Actually, you are going to see a lot of interesting stuff developing with the characters and story whenever you die and start over. Yes, it does suck when you die and lose all your items and experience but it seems the developers took this into account. They made it to where playing the game through each time rewards you with new events in the story and even a few more characters that eventually join your party. You'll see what I mean when you play it some more!
Ah, cool! I'm actually not far at all, so the rescue doesn't matter now that you've told me she comes back. But I did win a bunch of stuff from those puzzles in the first town, so it'd be nice to get rescued anyway. I'll go add you right now, thanks!
EDIT: Done. However, I'm going out of town in a few hours, so I might end up restarting just to have something to do.
Well, if you want to rescue me now, go ahead. I don't need it considering how little progress I've made (barely past the second town), but I certainly wouldn't mind, considering all the items I have. And I'm curious to what it's like to be rescued, too!
Oh, I thought I had sent the request, but I hadn't. Whoops. Wasn't sure how it worked. I have now officially sent a request, so do your best!
You even get to attach a pre-written note. I chose: "I've fallen and I can't get up." Classic.
My "rescue number" is 0000-0001-3072. I don't know what that's for, probably something for me not you, but figured I'd share in case. Also, I think you can call for random players to rescue you, too, which is neat. I wonder if many still use that feature.
Awesome game, one of my favorites. Good luck. Atlus is localizin Shiren 3 for Wii early next year. I can't wait. Sega didn't make enough on the DS version and declined to localize another. Good 'ol Atlus.
If you like the hardcore random dungeon crawlers like Shiren then check out Baroque for the Wii. It's real fun, hard, and can be had for $20 or less. It's similar with the random generated levels, restarting at level 1 on death and death being required to advance the storyline. It's has a little darker theme to it, but very enjoyable. The classic controller use on it is perfect.
Ah, I didn't realize what kind of game Baroque was. Always thought it looked interesting. Sounds like a good alternative to Chocobo's Dungeon for me, though both look good in their own way. I just think I'd rather a too-hard dungeon crawler than a too-easy one. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll have to nab it if I get tired of this game before Shiren 3 comes out!
Oh, by the way, Wolf Ram Heart, change of plans. I thought I'd be riding out of town with someone else tonight, but it turns out I'm driving myself, so I won't be able to play Shiren today after all. Go ahead and take your time rescuing me. Let me know how it is. If it's fun, you'll have to let yourself lose some time so I can try.
Hey Adam, I tried to rescue you last night but unfortunately my first attempt failed. Don't worry, I will try again today! I'm not giving up! I was ambushed by a swarm of monsters on the 16th floor and I tried using the Bufu staff on one of them to distract them away from me but another monster just ended up leveling up twice and killing me! It was pretty harsh! By the way, did you name your character Corn? The attatched message said " I've fallen and I can't get up!" so I just figured it was you.
Corn? Haha, no. My profile name is Adam, but in the game they still call me Shiren for some reason. I don't really mind, but it'd be cool if they referred to you by the name you entered, which otherwise has no purpose... I certainly didn't call myself Corn though!
Anyway, good luck with the rescue attempt. I'll let my guy remain unconscious while you are working on it and use the free time to play more of my otherwise neglected DSiWare games. By the way, what is the rescue attempt like? Do they start you from the beginning, or from wherever you were last, or is it separate from your normal game?
So you aren't Corn after all? Well, I guess I can't call you CornAdam then! My profile name is WolfRam but in the game they still call my character Shiren. I believe the only purpose of the profile name is for the online rankings. Originally my profile had the name of Shiren but there are a lot of people with that name on the leader boards and it makes it hard to determine which one is you. So I decided to just go with something more unique! When you go out to rescue someone you start from the first village and you venture out into the dungeons like you normally would but the goal is to get to the spot on the floor where the person you are rescuing is located. Also, you aren't allowed to stop in any of the villages along the way. It is all dungeon, so you don't get to stop for shopping or rest! It may be tough but it's fun!
