I'm glad to see somebody else who actually remembers this game. I've been looking forward to this one for a while. I remember when it was called Project Monster. I will definitely be pre-ordering it and picking it up on day one.
The voice acting sounds like it might get annoying after awhile, but this looks like a fine game. Not my #1 Gotta-get game at the moment (that'd be Pokemon Black/White), but this looks extremelly promising and pretty fun.
I ordered it online yesterday, so it should be on its way. I probably won't get around to playing it anytime soon, but wanted to make sure I grabbed a copy!
I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.
Short (non-NL-sanctioned) review: it's...not nearly as good as Hatsworth.
Where will it be posted? And many sites gave this relatively high scores and it's one of my favorite DS games.
Not sure when our review will go up. I'm not reviewing it so the NL review might be much more positive, but, personally, I didn't really like it. I had some serious issues with the game that really interfered with its enjoyability. It kind of felt like a dumbed-down Hatsworth at times, which isn't in itself a bad thing, but thanks to the execution it kind of was a bad thing.
I spent a few hours with it and traded it back. Since doing so I looked up walkthroughs just to see how much of the game I had left, and it turns out that I gave up pretty much right before the final boss. So it's not as though I didn't give it a fair shake. I just didn't get much out of it.
It depends, is it like that 2006 RPG you can get why people love it but annoyed you too much and you wished was much better (Contact) or that 2006 RPG that just isn't good and feels like a huge dissappointment (Magical Starsign)?
IS THIS CONTACT OR MAGICAL STARSIGN?! THE WORLD MUST KNOW!
It was a pretty huge disappointment I'd say. Everything felt like a small-scale (and less-good) version of Hatsworth. Hatsworth was great, but could have used some fine tuning in a few areas...particularly the late-game difficulty spike.
Monster Tale had the same difficulty spike issue, but in addition the music was incomparably worse, the visual presentation was more colorful but also extraordinarily boring, the lower screen "pet sim" was blatantly false advertising (it's nothing like a pet sim...you just send the monster down there to hit switches and enemies...which is fine, but considering the fact that Hatsworth's puzzle game was actually a puzzle game, this is a big step backward), and the characters weren't nearly as interesting or clever this time around. Oh, also, roughly half of the playtime is devoted to backtracking. And this isn't Legend of Zelda backtracking where you can open up new passages along the way or solve new puzzles or anything...it's just beating up the same vanilla enemies as you work your way from one end of the map back to the other, again and again.
It's not unplayable and it's not awful, but it disappointed me in just about every conceivable way. The concept was great, but the execution was clumsy. I expected far more of it, and I'm pretty sure this is my least favorite retail platformer that I've played for the DS.
