How many species of animal life is there on this planet?
I'd say that's a pretty good indicator of when there's too many.

I think any amount will do. It's not like you have to collect them all anyway, but it gets more challenging the more there are. You can always go back to earlier games if you want less

Well, at the same time you must remember this: Pocket Monsters.
They don't have to really be based off animals. So, I don't really understand why some people fuss about Pokemon not looking like an animal or something... They are 'monsters' anyways.
I think the artist behind the designs of the Dragon Quest games can maybe take part in creating some Pokemon while still retaining it's charm.

Another idea is to take Pokemon to another world/planet. There have been references to Pokemon coming from outer space such as Deoxys and Clefairy. Having a new Pokemon game take place in a NEW world, not just a region, would be pretty sweet. There would be no access to the Pokemon from 'Earth' on that planet, just new ones.
Incorporating some transfer machine method unlocked towards the end to gain access to you old Pokes would be the ONLY way to access the Pokemon from Earth... Something like that could work and I think would be cool.
The 'legendaries' could be Pokemon that resemble Deoxys (possibly a planet where it had originated from), and maybe link Deoxys to the story as to why it was sent to Earth- or how it got there. Yeah, kinda sounds like a stretch, but I would definitely not mind Pokemon being taken to another world.

I remember when the first 150 was a huge task, I was so proud when i finally completed the dex for Red and Blue 3 gens later {eye twitches} "I did it ..... I DID IT I got all 493" {Gen V}"awe Son of a B****" but seriously i dont mind collecting another 150 every 5 years the world has hundreds of thousands of different species of animals why limit a animal catching simulation to only a few hundred. just as long as they improve on game mecanics, bigger better storage and make pokemon on animals the havent done before (Dolphin for example) then I say keep em coming

I caught 400 Pokemon in my Pearl version and it marks the first time I never restarted a Pokemon game. I just can't do it for these games any more.
Also, I never though of seeing a chipmunk Pokemon... Or even a Sea Turtle, and I love turtles! That Ice Cream though... Well, it's a monster, just like the other 'mon. I am having that Garbage Pokemon on my team though
Ever since the beginning they have been saying there were thousands of undiscovered Pokemon. At the time, no one thought about it much, but now we are beginning to see what they ment.

New species of animals are discovered everyday so pokemon has sort of a tie in with the real world. Also legendaries pokes are kinda like Cryptid animals.
I like the idea of a theme video game. They can do in space in one game and also do one like an underwater theme game. The dive HM was so much fun if they could expand and make a whole game based on that it be cool. grass,fire and rocks stuff exist underwater so it won't just be a water type only game.
