Alright, so here's a blog to talk about the newest 3D Classic: Xevious. I'm surprised it came out in the US eShop at the same time, so anyone will be able to put their thoughts of it here.
My thoughts about the game so far is that the 3D is immensely used in the game. The distance from the background and the very eye-popping foreground almost looks like two transparant images. I mean as in, when playing the game and viewing on the foreground because most enemies fire and the Solvalou being displayed there, you will have to switch looking from the eye-popping display to the very background where ground-based characters will also be a very critical enemy to you. While you can easly put the 3D off (which in my opinion makes the game easier, but not so affective.), you can also use the 3D Classic Options to even adjust the 3D to an even more powerful level or a lower one. I find the whole 3D very challenging and well done.
I have bought the game from the first minute on it's release, but I can't find my way finishing the first zone. I got to zone 1-5, but died there and noticed my highest score rank was almost better than the highest of 40, 000 made by "M.Nakamura" who also got to Area 01-05. So, I thought I should wait to get further before posting my opinion already, but I don't think there are a lot of waves out there in the whole game. But again, the whole game is really tough and fun. Too bad, the BGM background music is really.. really.. brainwashing.

From the trailer on the eShop, the 3D looks great. I wonder why the original version has gotten such bad reviews? It looks about like any other flight-shooter to me.
The 3D really works well and helps the gameplay but like you I can't past 01-05, although I did top the leaderboard!
It was a good purchase though and the options for changing 3D depth and fully customisable controls are awesome. It's also kinda cool how the 3D classics share UI/title design.

Going pick up as soon as I get money on my 3DS along with Game and Watch gallery. Sounds like my kind of game.

The 3D really stands out in this game. I find it easier to play with the 3D minimized in the settings; otherwise, it's just kind of hard to keep track of what's going on in the sky and on the ground and I find it hard to focus on the bullets as they rise from the ground. Oddly, I maximized the settings on Excitebike and barely even noticed the 3D in that game, so I was really surprised at how intense the 3D is in this game.
I also can't make it past 1-5, although I can't really think of one thing that's destroying me — just seems like that's where my lives finally run out.
If the Nes version got such bad reviews why is everyone so thrilled with this version? So 3D suddenly makes a bad game good? In that case I can't wait for Urban Champion 3D! I would have taken Life Force 3D any day over this basic poorly aged so called classic. Shockingly even IGN gave the 3D version a glowing review. I just don't get it.

@Link79 As a game that you have to sit in front of a TV and play, Xevious lacks depth and doesn't compel hour long play sessions. But as a mobile title, its great for simple but fun pick up and play sessions. Plus online leaderboards. I'm a retro nut, so I'm down.

Also note this is the Arcade version of the game instead of the Nes version.
I like retro classics just as much as the next guy. basically every shooter to come after this is better though. Gradius, R-type and games like that make Xevious look horribly dated. I know this was only 1982 but some games are just too old and outdated to be much fun anymore.

I would say this game would be good for retro gamers who enjoy this type of shooter. In my opinion there is possibly better shooters on the way or been released, but I still note it still a good game.
yeah I won't lie and say that Xevious is a great game or that its anywhere near the quality of Gradius or R-Type. But it is nostalgic and mindless fun.
I felt like it was a pretty poor game, personally, and the 3D effect was the first time that I've been uncomfortable with 3D, ever.
In what way poor? The controls, the game-play, too hard/easy, too ugly graphics-wise? Concerning the 3DS effects that won't bother me since I very rarely have 3D on at all. I got the 3DS console because of better sound and graphics and couldn't care less about 3D.
In my opinion the 3dclassic-team did a good job. The latest "Iwata asks" (dont know if that is available in your country) gives a small insight of what they had to change to make the game playable in 3D. Its much more than one would think..
So to me its a very impressive title. But I liked Xevious earlier (Arcade version). There is so much hidden in this game, regarding the score system, regarding the position of your fighter and the relation to your own fire rate, hidden flags and so on. And it is so awesome to see the bullets of ground enemies travel up to you into the skies (could be a bit slower, but its arcade ). Im pleased.

I felt the gameplay was slow and dull. For its time perhaps it was an exciting game, but now? There's better stuff available on DSiWare, let alone DS retail.
Thanks for the reply. Don't wanna be a pain, but could you please name me a better shmup title avaialble on the DSiware shop then? I can't remember seeing any and you know yourself how the dsi-shop works so I don't feel like browsing for an hour or more haha.

The only thing I find dull about this game, is the background music.
