Sony will probably wait and then make a snide comment about it in an interview. Or they could ride Nintendo's tail and drop the PS Vita prices from $250 and $300 to $200 and $250 respectively. Then I might actually buy it.
Considering they're already losing money from the system I doubt the price would go that low.
Honestly what difference does it make if they made the announcement on August 12th? Are they gonna say "Hey all you gamers who are buying the 3DS today for a lower price, buy the Vita for $80 more later this November!!" Who exactly would they be aiming the announcement at?
All those gamers considering the 3DS at a reduced cost know that the PS Vita has more power in it's pinky. Sony potentially comes out and says "hey all you gamers considering the 3DS, why don't you wait a three months and buy a system more powerful than the PS3 and with as much resources pointed at it as the PS3."
The reason I think Sony will announce something over the next week is to stay in the public's conscious while the 3DS price drop happens. It's a pretty baisc marketing tactic.
Vita is targeted toward a different market and it's way more powerful anyway, so I don't think this price drop will affect Sony much, especially if the system's launch line-up is up to snuff and the system comes out in 2012.
It's targeted towards the exact same market. It's a very different device but they want all of Nintendo's customers just like they want all of Apple's and Microsoft's.
The Sony wants to be on top of the handheld market and that means beating Nintendo.
I was wrong. Sony announced today that the Vita won't hit in NA until early 2012. Japan will get it late 2011. Nintendo needs to have a stron holiday season to get a solid head start.

Nintendo has that strong holiday line-up you speak of!!. Mario Kart, Super Mario 3D Land, Resident Evil: Revelations(?), price drop. Now all they need to do is Bring out that sexy Purple 3DS and it's all good!
Currently playing: 3DS: KI: Uprising Wii: Xenoblade Chronicles "Heh, heh... Thanks... You're nice. Umm... Can I ask... a question? Your friends... What kind of... people are they? I wonder... Do these people... think of you...as a friend?"
I could see either Sony just button up, or there is a chance they could claim a press release of a December Vita launch. The system is moderately more powerful than the 3DS for sure, but it's no PS3 either. It can do more polygons than the 3DS, but a lot of the visual tricks the 360/PS3 can do both systems can handle so that extra beef the Vita has will fly into more cpu stuff for objects on screen, ai routines, more minute details going on than 3DS can do. In the end Sony has a balancing game to play with this one. They tried to hurt Nintendo with the $250 system where they'll lose considerably a good bit of cash on each one sold, and the 3G module isn't a $50 part so hoping to bank more off that one too. They go much lower they face never or not for a good many years breaking even and likely not making cash at all on the hardware hoping people adopt the games far more than the PSP did which is a big gamble. This time around it's not like having a N64 vs a PS2 on the market, it's more like having less a worst of the 360 with less polys against a better PS3 title, not so stunningly noticable so they can't well play that angle again. Also if they do come out and do that crap the same day, all they'll do is make Sony fanboys happy, piss off and amuse various gaming media outlets, infuriate Nintendo fans who could have maybe got 2 handhelds and may now not, and in the end they'll still have the $80-130 more expensive system that they're playing again like PSP as the all in one media device.
Also you an figure in they won't be as generous with the in box stuff as they weren't with PSP until the bundles, so figure system+game(s)+memory card to save, it adds up even worse. Also if they do rush a release, they'll suffer what 3DS has been going through, crap for selection in games to enjoy of varying quality.

I'm not sold on getting a 3G Vita because I have an iPhone in my pocket at all times. I'm planning on using my REAL handhelds (3DS & Vita) at home and on the road. I use my iPhone while waiting in a long line or while being dragged along while my girl shops... The overal quality of games on phones will never be to the point it will steal away hardcore gamers. I need real buttons and a thumb pad of some sort.

Amen! I'm so thankful to see you say REAL handhelds because iGaming isn't TURE handheld gaming. Plus, nothing could ever get me to exchange my PSP or 3DS for mobile phone or iTouch/iPad gaming.

I hold an iPad in my hand. It's real handheld gaming.
Also, the iPad has a crapload of great games that the 3DS or PSP either does worse, or doesn't do at all.
Well as much as I love the iPad and my iPod Touch I could never call it a gaming handheld but yes, a palmtop or palm pilot it is indeed and cool it is that way. I love iProducts but I hate how Steve Jobs craps on Nintendo and PlayStation handhelds at his keynotes each year. It's unesscary and immature of him to do so.

But Waltz, real handheld gaming is never supposed to evolve or try new things. Didn't you know that?
I mean seriously, Nintendo was really pushing it when they added a touch screen to the DS. And man, when they introduced IR controls and motion to gaming consoles... they all but stepped over the line. It didn't matter that the games were fun and creative. I had half a mind to boycott them.

I have my share of issues with Apple too, but to deny that the iPad (and to a lesser extent, iPhone) is a gaming force to be reckoned with is no better than sticking your head in the sand.
Some of my very favourite games this generation have been on iPad or iPhone.

The iPhone has DoDonPachi, your opinion is irrelevent.
@WaltzElf, nope, I do not deny that the iTouch is a gaming force to be reckoned with. The best iTouch games I've played are Tiny Wings and Flying Hamster.

It's also immature and unnecessary to call iOS games non-true gaming because of issues you have with the people who work for Apple.
I think Nintendo has still a markting issue. They ONLY sell the 3D. If you talk to people who don't go to gaming websites they literally think the 3DS is a DSi with 3D added...that's a problem.
Concidering the Vita: Funny how many people believe in that thing. Yes, some hardcore gamers will buy it, but a lot of hardcore gamers generally don't buy handhelds and the general public.....they won't care a bit. That thing has nothing to offer.
