Topic: What to expect from the competition on August 12th

August 12th is a huge day for Nintendo. It may turn out to be a more important date than the official launch day of the 3DS. August 12 will see Nintendo make a massive price slash. This slash in price will see gamers who already own a console (and who have connected to the e-shop at least once prior to the 12th) receive 20 free games. This is huge news and Nintendo is banking on adding a whole lot of customers while thanking those who loyally went out and adopted the system early and suffered through the lack of quality game options to date.

If I were an executive at Sony this day would be circled on the calendar and I would either be looking to make a major announcement the day of or the day prior to the 12th. The Vita has been rumored to be coming out during the holidays but Sony won't really confirm anything. It is my prediction that Sony will make this official announcement around the time of the Nintendo price cut in hopes of stunting Nintendo's growth in the next gen handheld market.

if they do something like this, a lot of people might see it as a move to stain Nintendo.
if i was them, i would wait and see what happens with that event from nintendo.
make a couple of meetings and brainstormings about solution, advertising ideas and business plans to compete against them.
watch, analyse then make a stronger move.

of course, Sony did bash nintendo a couple of times in the past (saying the 3ds is a kids toy, or whatever) so it wouldnt even surprise me if they do a big announcement at the same time anyway. and that is why Sony lost a lot of points to me in the past years.
i loved the PS1 and PS2, but the way they comment other companies reminds me the same marketing process as duracell VS energizer. Sega VS Nintendo.
i mean, when all you find to make your product look bolder or look better is to bash other people's work, i find it rather juvenile. if you cant find something in your product that can stand out else than comparing to others, then youre not the one that truly stands out. it reeks jealousy, fear of being lower. just like any teenagers in search of their place.

People only have so much money. Most people aren't going to buy both consoles. Who played "fair" doesn't matter if Sony takes this next gen battle. I get what they're doing and I think it's smart. Nintendo isn't my best friend, they're the people who make the system I have few games to play with. It's up to them pick up for themselves and if they can't then they deserve to take a back seat.

That's what I was thinking. They'll probably be watching those sales too to see how beneficial the price cut was.

Given the PS Vita will be more powerful than the PS3, I think PS2 classics should be a given. Think about the huge library of great games in the back library of the PS1 and PS2. That alone is worth a Vita.

PS Vita approved to sell:

Sony's PlayStation Vita just cleared FCC testing. For those unfamiliar with the process, this is widely regarded as the final step before a consumer electronics device is shipped to retailers here in the States, and given that "fall" date we've been hearing about, it sure looks as if Sony's on pace to keep its promise. So, you did save room on this year's wish list for yet another console... right?

All that remains is a release date announcement for North America... Possibly late next week around the 12th?

I don't see any advantage to the date of the announcement

Sony will probably wait and then make a snide comment about it in an interview. Or they could ride Nintendo's tail and drop the PS Vita prices from $250 and $300 to $200 and $250 respectively. Then I might actually buy it.

Considering they're already losing money from the system I doubt the price would go that low.

Honestly what difference does it make if they made the announcement on August 12th? Are they gonna say "Hey all you gamers who are buying the 3DS today for a lower price, buy the Vita for $80 more later this November!!" Who exactly would they be aiming the announcement at?

Uhm, the Vita is most certainly not more powerful than the PS3 and not even relatively that close.

An exec even said if it was "As powerful as a PS3, it's battery would only last 5 minutes and will burn a hole in your pocket."

Yup, I read some of the specs, and no, it's not quite as powerful. Another thing that caught my attention is the sizes of the game cards: 2 and 4 GBs. How much content do they plan to stuff in those cards?

Its only like the 3DS cart sizes, it seems the standard is 2 GB but some games are being given permission to use larger capacity such as Metal Gear Solid 3D which will use a double sized cart...

Kojima Productions’ creative producer Yoshikazu Matsuhana told attendees at E3:
“We incorporated so many 3DS-exclusive features into this game, but the only problem we ran in to was the size of the 3DS cartridge itself. We spoke to Nintendo about this issue and they let us use, for the first time ever, an exclusive 4GB cartridge for the game.”

...So just like you asked, how much content do they plan to stuff on those carts?
