I've contacted both Tyrone from Nicalis and Terry who created the game in an attempt to find out what's up. At first I just thought I was doing something wrong, but it appears this is happening to other people. I'll let you know something when I find out.
Ok, can you guys actually tell us what this game is like or give us a review rather than "omg i got a trinket!" lol I mean, why should I buy this? I'm a huge 8 bit video game lover, btw, so I think I already love it. But convince me... !

Just beat the game (3DS version), and I saw Corbie's name in the credits! Nice.
Oooh, so that's why he likes it! Now I get it.

Oh, wow. A glitch? Is it big enough to wait on buying this one? $8 is pretty expensive!

At $8, I wasn't going to download it (that and the fact they didn't format it to fit the entire screen), but after reading a couple of glowing reviews, I decided to give it a try, and am glad I did. I only have two more crew members to rescue, but I've only collected four trinkets so far. I highly recommend to anyone on the fence. Although, I might wait to play any of the bonus modes if there is a glitch assossiated with them.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
One of the trophies requires beating flipped mode, and it sounds like you don't really beat the game until you earn all the trophies, so this pretty much renders the game unbeatable to true completion. I have faith that since the Wii version of Cave Stories music bug was fixed, we can expect this will also get patched some time down the road. Here's hoping it doesn't take too long.
Thanks for linking to that review. I was one of the people on the fence but that review addressed all of my concerns about the game. I still think it's a bit overpriced (especially with everyone saying the PC version can be gotten for around $1), but since I'm not much of a PC gamer I'd rather pay the premium to have it on a system I frequently play on.
Question that contains an EXTREMELY minor music-related semi-spoiler, perhaps...
...ahem...
...in the escape from the final area, which you have to complete after rescuing your last crew member, is that new music? It sounds like a live band playing the chiptune music from before, but I don't remember that when I played it on the PC. (And I don't want to complete it again all over just to check.)
Is this a new track? It's wonderful, and it's not on the PPPPPP soundtrack that I have. I WANT IT.
@Corbs - E-mailed you back about the FLIP mode bug, here's a summation for everyone else:
Yep, my screen goes blank whenever I activate FLIP Mode. Oddly enough, I can pull up the pause menu, and that works fine. Also, the game is still playing, as I managed to die while the blank screen was running.
The main mode isn't really level based. You're basically exploring one big map, though smaller sections are referred to in-game as levels. It's easier (and more accurate) to think of it as one giant dimension though.
Completed it (saw the credits, got every trinket, and unlocked the secret area) in about 3 hr. 47 min. The only trinket I was missing was the "Sad Elephant" one, but I purposely saved that for the end like I did last year (the OCD in me wants VVVVVV to be my last-played game of 2011, like the PC one was of 2010). Does the secret area unlock before the credits or immediately after if you've collected all 20 trinkets, or do you still have to go talk to the crew member and trigger the final cutscene? If the latter then I guess I didn't miss anything, though, it would've been cool to see "Twenty trinkets" on the final statistics screen.
TL;DR I'm super-OCD about how and when I finish my games and am flipping out (get it?) for no real reason.
In more interesting news, I forgot how amazingly perfect the level design in The Tower is, and have decided it also has the music in the game (barring the mystery music Brutus mentioned that is probably my favorite video game track ever) in addition to being the best part of it. The ending level is really awesome too, and yeah, the music must be new, Chicken, because I would've remembered something that brilliant if I had heard it before. I will tweet Tyrone about its availability.
P.S. What an epic group of people in the Special Thanks! Pixel (Cave Story), Alex and Mike (BIT.TRIP), and Corbie (Nintendo Life). It's like a downloadable indie love-fest!
