So I have a North American 3DS and want to play games online with a friend in Japan. She has a Japanese 3DS. I realize the games are region locked, and my stuff will be in English and hers in Japanese, but is there any problem doing that? The region locking won't prevent me from playing games online with her, will they?

Also, what are some good 3DS games to play online? I have Smash Bros. and Mario Kart. I'm not sure which Mario games support online play but will have to go look...

It depends on the game. Some games like Smash and Mario Kart allow worldwide online matches.

Current games: Everything on Switch

Switch Friend Code: SW-5075-7879-0008 | My Nintendo: LzWinky

New Leaf is also cross-continent compatible, however the US version does not have a Japanese keyboard so you cannot use kana to respond to those who can.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate's EU and NA servers can co-communicate, but the JP servers are separate.

Stay safe, kids: Make sure to save frequently during multiplayer, and always use a stylus!

Thank you guys for the replies How about the Pokemon 3DS games and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon? Can I use NA copies of those to play online with people who have JP copies? It seems to vary based on the game...

Both Pokemon and Luigi Manson can be played with anyone worldwide. Best thing to do is have your friend on your 3DS freindlist.

Then Luigi's Manson pick friends under the multilayer.

When playing Pokemon when you and your friend are online it will show in the friend list. Just tap them and pick what you want to do.
