You can collect balloons in free flight mode to unlock 30 seconds per 20 balloons. I've increased my free time to 4 minutes this way. Other than that, I'm not aware of any way to make unlimited free flight time.
Yeah, that's way annoys me a bit. I don't understand the reason behind it. Why not let the player explore the island without having to worry about a timer.

It's a stupid, unwavering limit. also, i didn't see the '?' in the topic preview and thus assumed you had found a way to remove the time limit, and was thusly disappointed
@Kid_A - It's only 2 minutes at the beginning, making it unnessesarily hard and challenging to get long-distance interest points, like those on Wedge Island.
Cheats. The solution to everything. Please note that if you follow this advice, and end up getting your 3DS terminated, I am herefore not liable for your grief.
But seriously, I don't think it's possible. If it was, I'm sure there'd already be some kind of pointer on how to do this. Just keep collecting balloons, try and extend it to the maximum minutes possible.
If you collect all the balloons you get 5 minutes. It's a gimmick to add replayability and challenge to free flight. Like pix said it would have been nice if the let you have unlimited after completing everything. Oh well, 5 minutes isnt that bad.
There is a really cool easter egg after you 3 star the entire game though if that makes you feel a little better. n_n
A curse in the sense "Oh no, I can't fly for ever!". Though a blessing in the sense that it actually makes Free Flight interesting. It gives you something to work for and inspires you to explore even more than you would. You have to check out every little nook to find the balloons. Then there is a sense of reward when you find them by unlocking more time.
How long are you all really planning on flying around anyway? Also, is a that big of a hassle to restart the mode? Not really.
But that's just it, I was flying to the other island in the game. And I was done there. I would fly back to explore other parts when there was no time limit. Like getting into the vulcano or one of the caves. Or the other side of the mountain. But now, I'm just crashing my plane for fun, trying to do loopings and stuff because there is no time left to do anything.

I still think they should just have the OPTION to have no timer. Make none of the collecting count when there is no timer but have the OPTION at least.
Timer? Dammit. I haven't played free flight yet, but I was really hoping it'd be better than mission mode. Like several have already expressed, I LOATHE time limits in games. Excuse me for thinking that something called FREE flight wouldn't have any.
My Backloggery Updated sporadically. Got my important online ID's on there, anyway. :P

Picked it up just an hour or so ago. Played a few missions and I'm really enjoying it! Free Flight is a drag, though, I agree. I think what I miss the most is that in Wii Sports Resort, Wuhu Island was really alive. There were Mii's hanging out and cars driving around. It's kind of a ghost town in this game.
Missions are a blast, though.
