@BlatantlyHeroic Yeah... It's true. I kind of feel Mega Evolution is a bigger part of the core gameplay than character customisation though, and we've had plenty of clips of battles for them to be showcased in. If they're holding them back, they're doing so for a reason.
Though that doesn't really support either case; they could well be holding back so they when the news drops, it drops hard. Character customisation was particularly exciting because we had no trace of it for such a long time, and then suddenly we were introduced to what seemed like a far more comprehensive system than Gen 6 ever gave us, complete with its own introductory video. It was a 'feature'.
If Mega Evolution returns, I think it'll get its own video, and everyone will be super excited and there'll be lots of people yelling, "I told you so" at each other on the internet. But I feel it was worth translating that article to confirm that we haven't reached that point yet, and than if/when we do, it'll probably be with a lot more fanfare than a throwaway line in a magazine piece explaining the nuances of 'Soundproof'.
That's why I find it interesting that we know nothing - yet. I'm not even sure if we've seen footage of any Pokémon that have Mega Evolutions (though my memory is very grainy on that).
We could possibly get new Mega Evolutions, what if a Pokémon with Mega Evolution gets an Alola Form? While it's unlikely we'll get entirely brand new Mega Evolutions, it still can happen.
Also, I'd love to see Lucario and Jigglypuff get Z-Moves of their Final Smashes.
@BlatantlyHeroic It's just a coincidence. It's interesting to see that they've decided to reuse all their assets again for a third game (iin-battle at least). This clearly shows that it's too much work to remodel all the Pokemon and their forms in 3D. It made me question the complexity of the games. They rarely ditch anything and everything gets often carried over to the next generation. They will reach a point where there's simply too much content. Add the fact that it seems like they're already trying to introduce metagame changing gimmicks to keep the games fresh (Mega Evolution, Z-moves, Alola forms), on top of all the regular new Pokemon that come with a new generation.
It's just some food for thought. It would be in their interest to remove some stuff along the way, before it clutters the games too much. Mega Evolution, Z-moves and Alola forms don't seem too much work to implement. But what if the next generation introduces another gimmick? That why I wouldn't be surprised if they kept these features exclusive to the generation they were introduced in. That also means no Z-moves and Alola forms in generation 8. So now we're at a point where we haven't seen any evidence of Mega Evolutions. It doesn't confirm or disprove anything, but it's still something to think about.
I think you're right about Pinsir. And you're so right about Charizard (and Sharpedo) that it's embarrassing. Not that it ever was too significant, but hey.
I'm going to withdraw that claim and replace it another; that we haven't seen Alolan forms of any Pokémon known to have Mega Evolutions. I think that's a bit more robust.
@CrazedCavalier I know, but I'll feel guilty because it sounds like they're actually trying with the music in this one. I probably won't feel the same 3 hours into looping world themes and blaring battle chip tunes, but still, haha.
@Octane I think that's a bit too assumptuous. The real reason they have the same model assets is specifically because that's WHY they created models: so that they'd be able to easily implement old pre-existing Pokemon into every future generation with very little difficulty. Pokemon GO even uses the exact same models (granted, with new textures). In fact, Sun and Moon using the same assets just means that it's even more likely that Mega Evolutions would reappear.
It wouldn't make sense to take away Megas, it'd alienate too many people. Let's say you hate Charizard's design, but you love Mega Charizard Y's design. Megas are almost like new Pokemon in a sense, and most people have a favorite Mega that they'd hate to see just disappear. I don't Gamefreak would risk alienating so many people and potentially turning them away from future installments, even if it meant longer development cycles (and it just so happens that Sun and Moon has had a really long development cycle compared to past games, meaning there's going to be some meat to the games regardless)
I don't think they'd keep megas for the sake of not alienating players, when they've reworked some of the more iconic gen 1 designs like raichu and vulpix.

I'm dumbfounded why people think there will be no mega evolving in Sun & Moon. Sure, they haven't shown any mega evolutions but that's most likely because they want to focus on things that are brand new. They haven't released a video just to confirm that some older mechanics are still intact. Mega evolutions have been in every 6th Gen Pokémon game, including spin-offs so why would they just leave them out? I don't think there are any Pokémon evolutions/forms that have been left out before. Then there's the round spot on the bottom of the bracelet the trainer is wearing. GameXplain theorized that it could hold the Key Stone which is required to mega evolve Pokémon. I personally believe that's the case and even if it's not, you can just obtain some random accessory holding the Key Stone later in the game. It's not like there haven't been multiple different accessories serving the same purpose before.

Couldn't have typed this better myself. I personally don't see them removing such an important battle mechanic. They would risk irritating some of the fan base, to say the least.

....Wait, if the Bank isn't usable here until next year...are we still able to trade between this and Omega/whatever? Wondering if I could just catch a bunch of Pidgeys (or whatever old Pokemon Alola would have at the start, lol) and get my Pokemon in from Omega that way. lol

Keep it PG-13-ish.
I don't know....it's annoying....you'd think they would have this planned out already... :/
They've got it all planned. The plan is to push everyone towards the new games. It's just like whenever they give out pokemon for only OR AS and not X and Y. Also, it's like how it'll only be possible to transfer Pokemon from the 1st gen Virtual Consoles games via the pokebank to the 7th gen games and not 6th gen.
