I don't really have a problem with them streamlining everything and making it easier for kids, in fact some of the conveniences they're introducing are things I actually welcome (such as the Rotom Dex and the revamped battle interface). The problem is when that streamlining enforces a dumbed down experience on older fans that don't want it. We've seen a lot of that with the linear region design of Unova and Kalos and the roster limits on trainers in that region (can we please get a gym leader with more than 3 Pokemon again? Please?). What I see of this game looks promising in that aspect though, because while they have taken measures to make the game more accessible for kids, they also seem to have opened the region design back up. Hopefully the difficulty can follow suit, if so this could easily be the best Pokemon game in almost a decade.
I don't think they can every go back on the linearity until the scale back on the story and cut out the "friendly rival". Those two things really pressure the games to go for a linear progression to allow for scripted events to work on time. Of course they could go the Tales of Symphonia route, but that would require interesting, branching stories, which Game Freak doesn't know how to do.

@Octane but not every kid is like that. Some kids pick things up quickly and others don't. there's nothing wrong with that or what these games are trying to do. I just don't see this the same way you do. I don't see it as dumbing it down. I see it as making something easier for my four year old and my daughter to pick up and play. We will just have to agree to disagree and leave it at that.
Anyways I honestly can't wait to see what the Rotom Pokedex is like in the games. All my kids and me are totally stoked for this game and can't wait to play the Battle Royale together.
Want: Harvest Moon: One World, Story of Seasons: Pioneering Town, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury
Finished the Alola Dex.
Now playing New Horizons, Wrath of White Witch and Sword
I don't recall the 5th and 6th gen coming across as any more or less linear then any other gen. I was somewhat disappointed with the lack of extra legends in X/Y, but beyond that, it was par for the course.
Or at least, it didn't remind me of pre-Gran Pulse FF XIII.
Go back and play the Gen 1 games. There are multiple orders in which you can do the gyms. Gen 2 had a branch point. Earlier gens also featured far more points where the player wasn't explicitly told how to progress, and had to figure out what to do instead. It wasn't a mind-shattering puzzle, but it helps make you feel like you are in control, rather than an impersonal in-game character.

First of all, friendly rivals have nothing to do with that, they've been doing friendly rivals since 3rd gen and the linearity didn't start until 5th. Second, they really don't need to restrict you to a set path for the storyline, only at a handful of points in the storyline.

Older regions gave you a fair amount of choice in your progression throughout the game, Kanto pretty much opened up after Lavender Town, Johto let you choose between heading to Olivine or Mahogany after Ecruteak, Hoenn's late game was fairly open ended, and Sinnoh gave you a choice on the next few gyms once you reach Hearthome, and all four of them had several instances where you doubled back to an earlier area. Unova and Kalos basically railroaded you down a set path the entire game, the storyline paths are basically circles with no branching paths and minimal optional areas. You just go from one city to the next with no choice in the matter, it feels very restrictive and inorganic.
I will say I hated the circular maps in BW and XY. Really just felt boring and made it feel less like an adventure and more like a round trip of the region. I hope that in SM you don't just hop from island to island in a single loop, too.
Without just complaining that the games aren't like they used to be, how can they fix this? Personally I think having a set path doesn't help but a having a full map makes it feel even less adventurous. What if you had a map that filled out as you explored the region?
@FriedSquid Not sure how many gyms are on each island; but if we assume 2 per island, they could structure the game like this; 1 badge is required to travel to the second island; 3 are required to travel to the third islans and 5 badges are required to travel to all four islands. You can still block certain areas by HM puzzles. However, if the rest of the island is all opened up from the start, and if you're free to do whatever you want, that would be a huge improvement already.
@iKhan There are still lots of 5% mons in the early routes e.g. Pikachu, Dunsparce, Ralts and the different forms of Flabebé (red/yellow = 30%, orange = 4%, white = 1%). Unova had Scraggy on route 1, for example.
Scraggy only exists on a section of Rt. 1 that you can't access until you have Surf, actually. Until then, you can only find Patrat and Lillipup there.
Both BW2 and XY had a great variety of Pokemon in the early game, there were a ton of options even before the first gym. Granted, XY's was inflated a bit by having several generations of early game mons, but there were still a good variety of types.

In Crystal, you can only find Phanphy by going off onto a small part of the bottom of Route 46 that connects to route 29. You have to go out of the way to find it, it's not just a rare find.

You have to go out of your way to get Pansage/Pansear/Panpour in BW1 as well. And to get Pokemon like Litleo, Riolu, Dunsparce, and Farfetch'd on Rt. 22 in XY.
Burst was a little side manga thing and it wasn't majorly emphasized. Plus I doubt the company is going to sexualize pokemon with female burst versions of them.
Burst gardevoir and lopunny... they're coming.
(Oh yea I forgot... they already sexualized purrloin and virizion in the manga..)
I guess there is a reason why burst was unheard of outside japan...
@MegaBeedrill That's the same reason why I was convinced that it wont be Burst Evolution, but now I'm not so sure...
The blip about the starters having something hidden and the trainers appearing in battle fully modeled have me slightly worried as it seems like a good set up to a burst evolution. Or maybe not a burst evolution, but they seem to want to push Ash Greninja, so it could be something like that instead of how it is in the Burst manga.
Pokémon fusion, you all know it's going to happen.
I'm fine with Pokemon fusion by now.
If fusion would be implemented in some way having, an example like, a level 20 Slowpoke and level 20 Shelder next to each other to trigger a permanent fusion, that would be ok.
Another fusion example is Double-Battle-only-fusions, take two Pokemon with atleast one same typing and the same gender, and you've got more fun for Hitmonchan/Hitmonlee, or, Metagross/Bronzong, or, Reshiram and Zekrom into the Original Dragon we've been waiting for.
Look, I don't care, but anything other than Pokemon Burst.
Wavedashes behind you Got some of dat Maylay?
