Nintendo has reconfirmed its commitment to the Nintendo 3DS in their latest financial briefing. The system continues to sell well so naturally the company says that it is continuing to develop new software for the platform.

“Although sales are trending lower than last year, the results from our seventh holiday season sales have maintained stable levels. As explained during the financial results briefing in October of last year, the Nintendo 3DS family of hardware has continued to sell steadily without significant fall-off, even after the release of Nintendo Switch.

Overall totals for 2017 were down compared to 2016 when Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon had globally intense sales levels, but exceeded 2015 in the US and European markets.

A multitude of titles across a wide variety of genres have been released for Nintendo 3DS, creating one of the strongest lineups ever. We are, of course, continuing to develop new software, but we believe it is important to leverage the rich library of Nintendo 3DS series titles to drive sales with Nintendo 3DS owners, as well as consumers who recently purchased Nintendo 3DS hardware.” What is your thoughts about this?

I have No Idea.
But, i trust Nintendo can create their new IP for 3DS before 3DS ended.
Hopefully something cute again.

There's nothing to think about that statement. What they say is absolutely clear : new games will keep coming (maybe not that many but there are for sure some unannounced ones) but they will focus more on the ''selects'' series of games, to ''leverage the rich library of Nintendo 3DS series titles''. After all, the Switch might be the new star, and a priority for Nintendo, but it's not the 3ds replacement, or the cause of it's death (not yet). After all, with such a rich library, it's normal for the 3ds to...step a little aside, so that the new baby (Switch) gets the support it deserves.

Whatever they have in store, it can't be anything major. Going by the titles they put out last year (such as Samus Returns, Ultra Sun/Moon, Shadows of Valentia and Superstar Saga), it's obvious they're not interested in developing entirely new games from the ground up. As far as games in which Nintendo is involved, that sushi game is still MIA, and I'm sure they can publish some Japanese third-party game like Dragon Quest XI if they really think there's money to be made still.

No matter how much everyone wants to cling to the 3DS, it's on its last legs. It is obsolete. That said, its age and low cost make it an excellent entry level system targeted toward people with limited money and/or children. Nintendo is unlikely to have more than one or two big releases left on 3DS but will keep the system around as a low cost item. Much like how the Game Boy remained on store shelves long after the GBA was released.

As I've said quite a few times, they really should've made a Mario 3D Land 2. Just reuse all of the assets from the first game to make loads of new levels. Can't be too much work. Would sell loads
