I wanted to collect all the non 8-bit Bowser badges, but I thought I couldn't get the one in SMM 'cause of the grey blocks blocking the hole. Thought I needed some extra force or something to break the blocks. Thankfully today's practice catcher uses that machine, and I discovered that the grey blocks tumble down just like that when something falls on it. D'oh!
Well thanks to that, I was able to nab Bowser and his fiery breath with my free plays today, along with 4 grey blocks. I'm happy.
So, I just reached level 4 and the bunny asked me what kind of video game would I enjoy to play that used the badges (I said RPG), then that he would let his boss know my preference.
Got three free plays today, of course when there's nothing I really want. Free is free though, so can't really complain; just wish I had this luck yesterday with the Splatoon badges!
Anyway, I used the free plays to grab some Woolly World badges. I got Baby Bowser, a ShyGuy, Poochy, a Paratroopa, and that yellow circle-thing that kinda looks like a plush Zapfish from Splatoon. Not bad, all in all.
Everyone seems to be getting multiple free plays but me. I've been getting just one from the practice catcher a few days in a row.
That was my problem for the last few days, too. Today was the first day a got a blue practice badge in quite a while. Hopefully your luck will turn around too!
@Scary_Old_Lady: Keep pressing the L and R buttons, or left and right on the D-Pad to quickly switch the machines back and forth. Have the badge you want in the middle and keep switching left and right over and over again. It takes quite a while to make a badge fall, but it's possible. I've heard it can even take up to 30 minutes with some badges! I've done it a couple times, but only took me about 5 minutes... so it's either luck or really depends on where the badge is located in the machine. Hope this helps!
Don't use your free plays yet, guys. The Swapnote machine with 4 badges on a slope with holes within the slope and a round red badge at the tip can be tipped over. I dunno if all 4 badges would fall into the hole though. I tried it when I didn't have a free play. I tried it twice actually (I resetted) and it worked both times. I'll do it again tomorrow when I get another free play.
I got a giant Thwomp today, along with 1 cloud, 2 glass blocks, 4 coins, and 2 music blocks with my free plays today. I actually was going for cape Mario, and I thought getting the Thwomp would shift Mario down the hole, but it didn't.
I basically wasted two free plays on the bomb machine with the dry bones piles; I wish they would do more of the bomb machines for the practice catcher, I had no idea what I was doing! XD I only got the P-Switch and the three dry bones piles.
With my other plays, I managed to get Hammer Bro., his hammer, a wrench, and two doughnuts.
Used the trick to get the red Swapnote badge with the cat. Used my free play to try to get a SMW Mario but instead knocked over a wrench, so all I got was a measly wrench. Not one of my better days.
Last couple days I've been trying hard to grab the Cape Feather to complete the set, but I just cannot get the thing!
I had 4 free plays today, came closest when I grabbed it and the Star, but in the end it fell down again. Trying to grab it after its fallen on the ground seems impossible to pick up — I don't think the crane even reaches far enough.

Sorry the feather is giving you so much trouble! Here'a tip: at anytime on a machine, you can tap on the bunny, and he'll ask you if you want to reset the machine. This way, the feather might be reachable again, since I agree with you that the crane won't reach that far. Hope you get it!

Same thing happened to me today, except I went for the Sumo Bro. Now I have two wrenches! lol
Man I had a really good badge day compared to yesterday's wrench.
First I went to the practice catcher and got a super bonus and 3 free plays. Yay! Then I went to the machines and was pleased to see a bunch of new games, including more food badges! I have dedicated myself to getting all 121 whatever food badges, so all my free plays went towards those, but there were still some left so I bought 5 plays (I had money in my Eshop wallet for such an occasion). To my delight I managed to procure ALL the badges with a play left.
I really like chain chomps so I decided to go for that one as pictured by Undead_terror above. Then I got a complete surprise. Let me tell you so you can try it out for yourself! I aimed for the pillar in a futile attempt (I thought it wasn't going to work) to grab it, but to my total surprise it not only failed to lift it, but the claw hit the right tip of the pillar and shoved the Chain Chomp badge (links and all) towards the hole, ALONG WITH EVERYTHING ELSE. Down they all went with one play!!! That was very satisfying. I didn't think it was possible with so many badges on the Chain Chomp. When the machine reset, the Bo-bomb actually bounced off the shell and fell on the hole (I had no free plays left), just as Undead_terror described. You might get lucky with that one.
Also, some machines are tippable with the trick, BUT in order to get them, you have to first nab the badges that are above the hole. No, falling badges will not knock those badges in. They'll just get stuck there on top of the other badge.
On the machine with the 2 Dr. Marios, the yellow virus can be tipped, but you need to nab the pill floating above the hole first.
On the machine with the 'game over' Mario floating above the hole, you must nab that first. The Koopa Troopa and 2 blocks (one can fall after you get the other 2 badges) can be shoved.
So yeah, not only did I get all the food badges (Tomodachi Life is the only set that I have ALL badges) for my collection, but I also managed to get all those badges in the machine with the Chain Chomp. I only wanted the Chain Chain so that was a nice bonus! Unless more food badges get released in the next few days, I'm going to use all my later free plays towards SMB 2 enemies, like Tryclyde and Mouser. Those Christmas Mario badges look kinda neat though.
