LaSraOrtega

Hello all! New here.

Back to the color discussion, I really hope they come out with a new color soon or the N3DS for North America. I have the regular 3DS and wanted to upgrade to a new one, but not with the current limited options.

I bought Hubby a 3DS XL for Christmas 2 years ago and it's huge/heavy, so I don't want to have to get a giant one, but if i do, I'd like it to be cool/pretty at least. I can wait, 3DS still works **knocks on wood**. Also, I'm terrified of transferring everything over whenever I DO decide to upgrade.

I've done two system transfers, @LaSraOrtega, and both went smoothly. It's not the quickest process but it works fine.

Tell that to @Bezerker99 and @HandheldGuru97 and they might cry a little! Or just strongly disagree!

A wireless system transfer between two 3DS' will go smoothly only if you don't need a PC to first format any sort of upgraded SD card you might have....which was my case. Without properly formatting my 32GB SD card first, nothing went right during the transfer process. Not a big deal but considering it took me 2-3 weeks to finally figure out what I had done wrong made this experience truly troubling.

Tears of my anger, confusion and frustration. But beyond the nightmare, the New 3DS XL has been a treat. An excellent follow up to the 3DS Line, my unit has had a few problems (loose screen) and the Super Stable 3D can be a little wonky, but hopefully in a month's time they'll (please, please, please!!!!) bring the Smaller New 3DS to the Americas and I'll get one, do a wireless transfer and then get my XL Unit serviced. All and all though, I'm glad I upgraded Nintendo knows how to make a great handheld and the New XL is easily one of the best!

So I'm buying a New 3DS XL soon but I'm worried Nintendo is gonna announce the next handheld very soon as its later into the 3DS lifecycle and there have already been system revisions. Do you think the next handheld will be announced this year or next year? Should I go ahead and get one?

@WackoDaSniper - Nintendo just released the New 3DS so I will be very surprised if they announce its successor now. If you are uncertain, my advice will be to wait for E3 next month before you purchase. I'm also curious to see what Nintendo's plans are for the 3DS.

The DSi XL? That released in March/April 2010, a few months later the 3DS is announced.

I will update this when Half Life 3 arrives. [Started 17/11/2015]

I picked up a N3DSXL a couple months ago. I've really enjoyed it. I've owned the first 3DS on launch but sold it due to lack of games. Picked another 3DS (XL) a few years later, but sold it when I got into PC gaming. Now that being a dad has taken over my life, the 3DS is the only system I can play. I doubt this system's support is going anywhere anytime soon.

If they announce a 3DS successor it will be be next year. Why??? Nintendo has stated (time and time again although people on the interwebz seem to forget it) that the NX won't be shown until NEXT YEAR! And why am I bringing up the NX??? If the NX is anything fairly plausible, then there is a good chance then that it is a 3DS successor and not a Wii U successor. Could it be a Hybrid??? Yes..but I for one don't think the tech is quite there yet (and kinda because I'd rather just have a dedicated handheld and a dedicated console). Is there a Wii U Successor in the making??? Absolutely, but there is also a PS4 and XB1 successor in the making too. Even though the Wii U is a abject failure, with Zelda and (probably/maybe) a Metroid title the Wii U can make it through 2016, and maybe into 2017. Is that the best way to do it for Nintendo??? Yes and No. Nintendo's handhelds have traditionally always sold better than the consoles, the 3DS being that it is 4 (going on 5) years old and the Wii U is only 3 (going on 4) years old, replacing the 3DS first (and looking at history Nintendo's history handhelds do come first GBA/Cube, DS/Wii, 3DS/Wii U as recent examples) makes the most sense, financially speaking. IN mid-late 2017 early 2018 then maybe Nintendo can replace the Wii U, without taking to much of a hit.

TL;DR
The NX is (probably) going to be a 3DS Successor announced next year (I don't have a clue when it'll launch).
Now WackoDaSniper, with that (relatively made up/complete guess work theory of mine), you have a choice. You can wait probably two years-ish for the NX to come and play all the great 3DS games on it as it'll probably (IE: better be) backwards compatible. Or you can get a New 3DS XL and enjoy all those great games between now and whenever the NX comes out. Either way enjoy your purchase (or the waiting game) the 3DS is easily one of the greatest handhelds ever and it has some of the best games of the 8th Generation! Either way, you can't do anything wrong (expect if it were me, those two years would be wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy top long to wait, so my advice...go for a N3DSXL now! )

@Artwark
Iwata continues to confuse me (did the same thing last year saying ORAS was a "brand new experience") Well I suppose we'll just have to wait and see what happens...I mean after all we only have a codename, so there isn't anything to go on.

I wouldn't put it past them but I personally hope they get another solid 3 years out of it. Xenoblade sold well considering the limited user base for the new system.

we won't know anything about the NX until next year. But to me it seems like it will be more of a mobile thing. Since that's what the DeNa partnership is about as well as the new loyalty program.

I wonder if any N3DS XL color or colors will be announced at E3 for North America? I wanted the Metallic Blue model.

Only way I pick up a "New 3DS" is if they bring that non-XL version over, hopefully the white JP model with the colored buttons. Then I'll bite.

Plain old gamer :)

I hope they announce that new Animal Crossing model at E3. I missed out on it the first time and like the white color of it.

Is the New 3DS worth it? I'm probably one of the few people who hasn't upgraded and still has a normal 3DS. I'm fine with it, as long as the 3DS still continues to get games such as the new Fire Emblem. I'm considering upgrading, but the New 3DS only has Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, and I'm thinking about waiting to see if new games are revealed exclusively for the New 3DS. I'd like to play Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, as I never played the Wii version, but it's probably not a huge factor if I end up buying one. Should I upgrade to new 3DS?
