You cannot hold items behind you in online mode for MKDS. Everyone who is saying you can either is not reading what we've been saying or is mixing up their memories of online and offline play.
If you would like something more authoritative than me repeating myself in bold text, here's one of the oldest MK sites, and the very first paragraph (before the image of the banana) says the same thing: http://www.mario-kart.net/mkds-items.html
There is no trick to it, and it isn't something that sometimes worked but not always. Nintendo disabled item dragging for online play. It was their first online game and they apparently wanted to keep races as simple as possible.
Double Dash was indeed the peak (Off-topic: sort of like the first Galaxy for the platforming franchise). Not only did the characters have completely different special items which made a huge difference in gameplay, but you also had so many strategic combinations available due to the 2 slots. You could pair items together that might be handy in different situations, and of course the cart weight was also a factor to consider when building your team. Learning to play with different combinations felt very different, just like a fighting game, and unlike the other Kart entries.
I miss picking Waluigi and having all those wonderful bombs to play with, maybe putting him with a turtle to switch out for some spinning shells when I need defense instead (although let's be honest: dropping a bomb behind you in a narrow passage is the best defense of all). You could also hold an item in your secondary, imagine that! Such a varied and strategic game compared to the Wii entry, as much fun as that one may have been in other areas.
I totally and completely agree! Mario Kart Double Dash is the game that made me the Mario Kart fan that I am today.

Anyone notice the features the E Shop revealed on Thursday? :]
"Good. Everyone's together. Pyrrhon loves a party." "...It's funny because marriage is terrible!" If you know the origin of both of those quotes, then you're awesome! Songs are like hugs that mouths give to ears. Dreams are easy to achieve if hope is all...
yup i did but people don't seem to realize that the e shop has tons of information for that for example;if you go to the e shop and watch the new Nintendo show 3D it will show you a sneak peek of super Mario 3d land.
Im a big fan of Mario games :)
Im also a nintendo nerd :P
Nintendo inpires me a lot o w o
I don't think the eShop is that bad to navigate. Just hit the search bar at the bottom, type in the name of game and you're set. I do that for every online shop- even the App Store which is always "praised" when really, it's a similar situation if you want to find something specific.
You should see a "Virtual Console" shelf on the front. DSiware, I'm not sure. That's the only real problem is that they don't have a section dedicated to just DSiware games like they do VC. Original 3DS ESHOP titles would be under 3D games shelf. You could always just search "DSiware" in the search bar.
Anyways, I really think that new Arabian Nights style level looks cool. And the one with the giant balloon toad looks neat. I hope they have good track layouts though, seeing as I judge a track based on how fun it is to race on more than it's visual flare/atmosphere. I personally think the N64 Bowser's Castle has a near perfect track layout for my tastes, since I love drift heavy stages. I also like stages that have branching paths. And shortcuts.
