You do know you could snake in both Double Dash and MKW, don't you?

How is it broken if everyone can do it? It is just a more efficient way of racing, another skill to practice. I don't understand all the hate.

First of all, I could snake, it's not hard. It's just really annoying to do it on straightt aways just to stay competitive and it looks REALLY stupid. Also, I'm not certain about DD, but I've never seen snaking in MK Wii...ever. You have to wait such a long time to ignite the sparks you would either run into walls or you would get passed by people who were driving straight. The top MK Wii players don't snake, so it obviously isn't beneficial, if even possible.

I hope the coins won't ruin online like snaking or wheelies. Well, maybe they didn't ruin it, but it was kinda annoying.
Oh but the biggest issue about MKDS and MKWII's online were hackers.
Oh and MKDS is overrated.
The courses were the biggest issue.
while waluigi pinball is one of the coolest mk courses ever, most other new courses, especially rainbow road were boring.

I posted a video in this thread of snaking in Double Dash, so yea, it's there. I am apparently misremembering MKW.

I don't see how it's annoying or stupid though, just to stay competitive. I mini-boost to stay competitive. I get the start of race boost to stay competitive. I play the game for the competition. It's fun. What exactly is wrong with it?

Wait a sec, have you even played MK Wii?

lol just kidding

Well, it's stupid for one, because the game is not meant to be played that way. But the real reason why it is stupid is, when people race down a straight away in a real life race, do you see them swerving back and forth across the road? Absolutely not. It looks stupid and it is stupid that swerving back and forth would be faster than driving straight. Also, it takes away from a game element that was intended to be used: Drafting. Try to draft off a snaker.

Hahaha, what on earth does MK have to do with real life racing? You don't mini-boost on turns in real life. And you sure don't throw turtle shells. It is no different from ordinary MK skills.

The reason why snaking doesn't matter in DD is because it only had local multiplayer. My friends wouldn't have snaked even if they knew what it was back then.

@Adam

It completely screw up the balance (certain karts much better for snaking) and, more importantly, utterly ruins the fun of the game in the opinion of myself and many others.

Everyone can do it, yes, but how is it fun? I believe whole-heartedly that it was a screw-up resulting from not enough testing (leaving the drift too open), rather than an intended kind of gameplay mechanic. Only the stupidest devs in the world would make a suggestion like this: "hey, let's make the karts go faster if the player slides all over the lane and jams the control pad left and right to the point of great thumb discomfort!" In other words, any move or technique you add to the game will be open to all, sure, but the criterion should always be fun. Mario Kart isn't fun at all when it's reduced to mastering a single absurdly annoying and repetitive controller technique.

Also, even if you could sort of snake in DD here and there, it wasn't at all the same game-breaking mechanic from DS that required everyone to do it in order to compete if one person decided to do it. Furthermore, the console and portable games are different regarding multiplayer from my perspective. On the console games, multiplayer primarily means local co-op with friends. For the DS game, that isn't likely to happen (don't know but maybe one friend with a DS) so the online play had to replace that local fun, and something that ruined the balance and play, like snaking, meant there just wasn't any fun multiplayer left to speak of.

@ShyGuy That's.... cool, I guess. I don't see how it's relevant. You can play MKDS offline, too. You still haven't said why it's a problem, aside from it replacing drafting, which I don't see as a big deal. Drafting's neat but not exactly exciting.

@Wario

You can still play online with friends, in which case it's still the same.

You say it's not fun. I say it's fun. That isn't exactly an argument.

Kart balance I completely agree with you on. They should have balanced the karts better so that either more could snake or others would have something to counterbalance that. It was boring to see everyone play Egg 1 or Poltergust (or whatever Luigi's was called). I really liked Egg 1 even before I figured out snaking though, so it didn't bother me personally so much.

Adam, put it this way. Are you mad that snaking is NOT going to be in MK 7? That's the real test to how much you liked it.

They never said if it would be in there or not, to my knowledge, nor do I see how that is a test of anything. I would not be mad, no. I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the feather, coins, and all sorts of things that aren't in every iteration of the series.

I haven't seen any news about this, but I'm still waiting to see how Mario Kart 7 handles team play. Mario Kart Wii fell hard in this area in comparison to Mario Kart DS. Options for friendly fire during team races and free-for-all in battle should return. I'm also curious as to whether or not this game will feature a Mission Mode of sorts. I believe Mario Kart Wii did have challenges players could access from the game's channel every so often, but it was no where near what Mario Kart DS provided. I'm hoping for Mission Mode to make a full return in 7, though it probably will again be absent from the experience. I do have to give credit to the game's new characters. Wiggler, Honey Queen and Lakitu are certainly out of the blue.

Adam

The only way I'd be interested in teams would be if it offers battle mode with multiple teams, not just two. I don't see the point in team races, and one team versus the other in battle mode seems a little too tame compared to the chaos of yore.

It seems like a perfect test to me. It must not be too fun if you don't care if they implement it in other Mario Kart titles. Coins and especially the feather don't hold nearly the same significance to the core racing as snaking. I for one, would be mad if they took out drafting.

I liked drafting, too, and I wouldn't be mad about that. It's an arbitrary test with no basis in anything. The feather was all sorts of awesome. It opened up the possibility of shortcuts in every track. I really wish they'd bring it back, but I am not the kind of crazy person who gets mad about a video game no matter how much I like something. Snaking was fun. Not snaking is also fun. I am just not one to cry about it.
