Didn't see this coming! Looks like Atlus refuses to let the 3ds go in peace.

They did say they would make one last one as a big celebration for the series, or something like that, right?

They went the windows and iphone route and skipped directly to 10

@Meowpheel I don't remember them saying that tbh. I can go for one more. Now to get back into 5 because apparently I need to get ready for 6-X lol

From what I could gather from the trailer.

Confirmed Classes: Hero, Survivalist, Ninja, War Magus, Highlander, Harbinger, Landsknecht, Pugilist, Medic, Shogun, Arcanist, Gunner, Farmer, Sovereign, Zodiac, Nightseeker, Ronin, Protector, and Imperial.

Confirmed Dungeons: Primitive Jungle (EO1), Undersea Grotto (EO3), Sandy Barrens (EO1), Lush Woodlands (EO4), Waterfall Wood (EO3), And some new Ancient-Tech themed area.

Biggest EO yet, might be the most unbalanced too, but it looks so damn fun.

A bit unrelated but I actually just ordered Etrian Odyssey V on Amazon yesterday. I've played Persona Q so I generally know what to expect from the series but I've never actually played an entry in the Etrian Odyssey series before. Is 5 a good place to start? Or would the remake of 1 be better?

It's pretty exciting to see a new entry announced when I'm just jumping into the series. If I end up enjoying it it'll give me something to look forward to.

@Xaldin Persona Q had a really good story and characters so if you like those things you may want to start with the first 2 remakes as they added a lot of story with a decent cast.

This series however has never been so much about the story and the characters are made at the very beginning of the game so you kinda make your own story. I personally think IV is the best place to start and haven't given V a fair chance yet as @Ralizah will argue that V may be the best in the series. V took the overworld out and I really liked that and I'm having a hard time going back to the basics with V. Dont get me wrong it's a good game and worthy of the series I just didn't care for the step back.

@Spoony_Tech Thanks for the info. I found a cheap version of IV on eBay so I might wait for that one to arrive before trying V then. There's something I've been a bit confused about too, and that's with the Untold versions. I've seen many people reccommend buying both the Untold and original DS versions of 1 and 2. Does Untold not have all of the content of the first 2 games? I heard it has a story mode and classic mode and figured the classic mode encompassed everything in the original.

@Xaldin While I love the first game I would never recommend playing the original ds version. It is so out of date compared to the more recent entries. I would just stick with the classic mode on both the remakes because even though they are basically the original games they still have a more modern feel to them as they've been updated.

@Spoony_Tech Alright, thanks! I'll probably pick up the 2 remakes eventually once I beat 4 and 5. Hopefully they aren't impossible to find by that point though.

@Spoony_Tech Bro I'm almost at 3rd stratum in EOV now. Gotta say, its very good, and somehow is on the same level as IV for me. We'll see where my rankings when I finish it.

@SMEXIZELDAMAN I probably just need to get back into it. I'm enjoying Alliance Alive right now and I feel like I need to play a more traditional rpg since it's been a long time since I have.

@Spoony_Tech I was initially disappointed by the lack of overworld navigation and the integration of race skills into the gameplay, and I still think the increased character customization is kind of pointless (I'd prefer more character portraits over being able to change the eye color of my characters), but I do think, in terms of dungeon design, difficulty balancing, organic narrative development, and overall mechanical diversity in battles that this is the best game in the series. Certainly the best classic EO experience.

I do prefer EOIV, though, on a purely personal level. The music and overworld are just wonderful, and the decreased difficulty makes it feel more... relaxed? It's a great game to just chill out to. Although that bonus dungeon is still ridiculously hard.

@Xaldin EOIV is, far and away, the least intimidating game in the series (with the possible exception of Persona Q), and is perfectly balanced. It's a great place to start. Definitely get around to EOV at some point, though.

If you go for the Untold games, I'd only really recommend EO2U.

@Ralizah I may have gone a bit overboard with the series. I now have ordered Etrian Odyssey Untold, 3, 4, 5 and Etrian Mystery Dungeon. I haven't found a cheap version of 2 Untold yet but I'm hoping I can find one soon. Maybe I should have waited until I played one before basically buying the entire series, but I really enjoyed Persona Q and the whole "Draw your own map" feature.

I'm also a fan of the Pokemon mystery dungeon series and I feel like it'll be nice to play Etrian Mystery Dungeon once I get familiar with the characters, enemies and locations

@Xaldin Nah, if you enjoyed the gameplay of Persona Q, you'll absolutely love the normal Etrian games. The mapping is one of my favorite features of the series as well.

The mainline games are particularly fantastic, as you feel like you're going on your own personal adventure. Plot developments crop up organically over the course of the games, and you'll take on a variety of quests, but it almost never feels like the game is yanking control away from you, interrupting gameplay with cutscenes, or telling you what to do.

@Xaldin I'm in the same boat. EOU2 did not get cheap for some reason. EOU1 did though

New Etrian X info from siliconera.com

source: http://www.siliconera.com/2018/04/11/etrian-odyssey-x-directo...

Atlus recently announced Etrian Odyssey X as new “complete crossover title” that puts together everything from the series, and director Shigeo Komori shared more on what’s new in this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine.

Here are some highlights from the interview with Komori-san:

  • Etrian Odyssey V was made to be a culmination made for the direction of “challenging something new.” However, on the other hand, Komori felt that there were many fans who expected it as a collection of all the good things from the series so far. That was one of the main reasons he decided to make Etrian Odyssey X as another compilation.
  • The stage of Etrian Odyssey X is set in Lemuria. This land is located far away from other continents, and has a sea of trees familiar to past adventurers that surrounds the Yggdrasil Tree located in the middle of the land.
  • However, players might want to be careful as any knowledge of past dungeons might backfire. There are some elements that will put a smile on the faces of veteran Etrian Odyssey players as well.
  • Komori says that implementing a world map is something he has always wanted to do. There are numerous labyrinths, and you’ll unlock new areas or activate events by meeting requirements.
  • Etrian Odyssey X boasts the most volume thus far in the series, and it includes labyrinths that aren’t required to clear the game.
  • The new class “Hero” has enough of a new feeling to not have it be overshadowed by conventional classes, as it has been made as a class suited for protagonists. It’s a all-rounded class that can attack, defend, and even heal.
  • In order to make the main class show off its advantages, the Force Boost and Force Break systems are being introduced.

Etrian Odyssey X releases in Japan on August 2, 2018 for Nintendo 3DS.

Sounds like it went halfway back to the approach of Etrian 4. No overworld navigation, but the game is composed of multiple smaller labyrinths instead of one big dungeon. Although I wonder how different that will feel, fuctionally, from having different stratums in one big dungeon.

The "hero" class sounds a bit... white bread. Jack of all trades. We'll see. I kind of like the weird changes made to the classes in Etrian V, even if it meant rethinking my traditional party setup.

What I'm more worried about is the Force Boost/Break system coming back. Might mean more FOEs and bosses with insanely bloated HP pools like in EO2U, which is that game's biggest downside, imo.
