Today I got my first handheld Nintendo device since GameBoy Advance and my first impression is disappointment and confusion.
The device in question is the new 2DS XL, but my bickering probably concerns the 3DS family altogether.
First off, there's this horrid bloatware, particularly Face Raiders, that I simply want to remove from my DS altogether. But it seems I can't do it? Why? Hiding the game in a folder somewhere seems like avoiding the problem that I can't customize this thing at all.
I have a $200 personal gadget that I can't personalize beyond getting new games and themes... Just what?
Not only do I think Face Raiders is the most absurd and grotesque game I've ever seen (and I played DOOM as a kid), I simply want to decide what my DS contains.
Second, the DS feels like a social media machine rather than a gaming device. From unboxing it to playing Pokemon Crystal, it took me almost 2 hours of setting up Nintendo accounts and ID's, linking them and making a Mii character (just why?). The frontal camera that's staring at me only makes the DS seem more like a smartphone than a gaming console.
I know I'm an old fart who just wants a re-make of GameBoy SP, but still, I'm a paying customer and I'm not satisfied.
99% of the reason why I bought this thing in the first place was that I wanted to play old Pokemon games. But Nintendo doesn't like ROMs, so I had to buy DS and purchase the digital versions.
The one thing I'd like to give Nintendo credit for is the fact they're at least offering their vintage games for purchase. I think that's the right way to go. I don't want to pay money for pirated versions on eBay, or pay for overpriced "vintage" cartridges.

Yeah, Pokemon games are great now and forever, but I can't shake the feeling I should've just built a Raspberry Pi portable gaming device and used ROMs. That way I could get the kind of handheld system that I want. No cameras, no Internet, no floating faces I need to shoot.
If Nintendo just sold me the ROMs that I could use with Pi, I'd be a happy man.
@ReaderRagfihs
Indeed, that's kind of my point here. I literally only want to play the older Pokemon games and I've already had to spend almost $200. I have the right to nitpick, since Nintendo doesn't let me play the digital Pokemon games on the PC, for example. I was forced to use either the 3DS family or Switch.
Honestly, they should just make a platform like Steam and let people play Pokemon on their computer. I'd suggest this to Nintendo directly, but my message would get scrapped instantly.
So what's the actual, current complaint other than not being able to uninstall Face Raiders (I consigned that game to some obscure folder ages ago, so I forgot that was even a thing)?
@Ralizah Can't delete Face Raiders, didn't like making an account to use eShop, doesn't like camera staring.
Regrets spending $200 instead of downloading roms on a computer.
@Ralizah
Let's say my only actual complaint is being unable to uninstall Face Raiders.
I think Nintendo should include the functionality to uninstall factory-installed software and I see no reason to object this.
Where can I get an authentic GBC + Pokemon Red for 45 bucks?
I'm not American so the shipping alone would be more than that.
I live in Finland and here people are asking 50 euros for a GBC that's missing the battery cover and all the stickers, and a worn out Pokemon Red cassette with no box is 25 euros. People are just getting greedy over anything that's retro.
Besides, in 2018 I'd rather go for a handheld console that has a backlit screen. The backlit modded versions are more than 100 bucks last time I checked and that's almost the price of a 2DS.
@Aroraboi89 It’s almost like Nintendo wants to make a profit off of their consoles and not just their games. Isn’t it obvious that a very specific PC store front would make a profit/s? Who would have thunk it?

Paying $200 to play Pokemon Red is fine by me. Just let me delete Face Raider and I'll be happy.

Why does it matter that Face Raders is on there? You can just make a trash folder for it and other useless software and move it to the very far right, that’s what I did.
