Topic: Controversal Opinion: Was Super Mario 3D Land the worst Mario?

I think this is a Controversial topic because It's almost 50/50 where ever I go.

Personally I think that Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS is the worst Mario game I have ever played and It turns out I'm not the only one here. There are some people out there that agree that the game wasn't as good as the previous Mario games.
But while I see those that say 'that' I also see people saying the Game is absolutely amazing! So which is it?

While I can't talk for everyone I just want to say that the Reason why I don't like Super Mario 3D Land is that everything I liked about Mario is just not in 3D Land.
Yeah It looks like Mario, It plays like Mario, It feels like Mario, Mario's on the cover, so why do I just not like this game?

It's crazy to say, but Mario 3D Land just doesn't have the Magic. There's something there that is missing, something that is in New Super Mario Bros, something that is in The Galaxy, it's even found in Super Mario Sunshine. I can't pinpoint it, but 3D Land to me feels like there's no soul. That certain soul found in the other games, that Soul that appears to be found in 3D World, but not 3D Land.

Am I alone here on this? It's kinda hard for me to explain, but The one thing I want to be clear on is that I found 3D Land to be the weakest Mario Game to date and I want to know what you guys think about it.

Disclaimer: This does not mean I think Mario 3D Land is a "Bad" game. By all means it's not, I think it's a well made game. But I think it's a weak Mario Game.

The worst in the 3d mario games or just the worst mario platformer in general?

Was Mariobro4. No, I'm not taking off my backpack...it's important.

Super Mario 3D Land is a very good game. I think people expected too much from it, they seemed to be expecting something closer to Mario 64. Super Mario 3D Land (and World) were more about taking the New Super Mario Bros. formula into 3D levels

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Maybe it's because I loved the music or it was made by a brilliant team or used 3D in a way worth caring about but while it has some of "this was made just because money" stink on it that I NEVER want on Nintendo games, most of the NSMB sequels reek by comparison.

Worst of the Platformer games. I'm not talking about the Sub Series like Kart or Party or whatever (if I was then Mario Party 8 is THE worst of the bunch).
Like I said it's kinda hard for me to describe, I play 3D Land and it's not as great as if I was playing the New Super Mario games or the Galaxy Games or Sunshine. It's just not that great.

The fact that Lost Levels exists means 3D Land can never be the worst Mario platformer. Also, that "magic" you speak of can't be explained because it doesn't exist.

I love that you put that disclaimer at the end, this board would of got a whole lot hotter otherwise.

I personally like it. It's not my favorite but definitely not my least favorite. That spot is for The Lost Level and Mario is Missing.

I don't want to get too involved in this, but personally 3D Land is my second favourite Mario game of all time, behind only Super Mario World. I love that each level is essentially it's own, self-contained obstacle course, where the point is not to collect stars (like in 64 or the Galaxy games), but rather the point is to just get to the end of the level. That was the point in Super Mario World, and for my money 3D Land is like Super Mario World, only in 3D.

That's all I'll say on the matter. It's a great game and if people don't like it, well, they're missing out. And it can't be that bad if the 3D Land game design is what they went with for the first 3D Mario game on the Wii U...

My game library ranges from Mario Kart to Call of Duty to Tales of Xillia to Diablo 3 to Forza. To me gaming is about having fun - not blindly supporting only one company while thumbing your nose at "the evil other systems."

I'm not going to call it the worst, but I understand if somebody calls it the worst.
3D World puts this game to the dust. But, to be fair it didn't need to try that hard to do so, because the level design didn't take those lovely risks that all those other 3D Mario games took.
I would put it down for "Worst 3D Mario" but I can't put it down for "Worst Mario" because there's Super Mario Land, New Super Mario Bros. DS and New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
@SuperiorTech I still believe NSMB2 have some of the alot of the best levels ever made in a Mario game. Especially when it comes to the DLC levels.

3D Land was awesome. Easily in my top five Mario games.

I don't think it was a terrible game, but it was kind of dull. There wasn't any kind of special twist on the gameplay or anything like the past 3D games have, it was just Classic gameplay in 3D. A lot of the levels were fairly generic, and they reused elements from past Mario games. Once you get past the fact that it's the first 3D Classic style game, there's just nothing special about it, it's a pretty vanilla platformer.

Uh no. Because Super Mario 3D Land is in my top 3 Mario platformers. At the very least its the best 3D Mario platformer.

And believe me, I've been playing Mario games for a long damn time.

I probably haven't played it enough to give a conclusive opinion on it, but from what I've played so far, I don't think so. It makes good use of the 3D and has interesting level design. There's also more charm in it than in any of the NSMB games.
