I remember you could format a regular SDXC card to work with the old 3DS. Does the same trick still work with the New 3DS? I know it's not recommended by Nintendo, but I'm just curious. I have a microSDXC card lying around that I could use with the New Nintendo 3DS XL I pre-ordered.
Don't do it. If it isn't recommended, then it could break your game. Why do you need a microSDXL card anyway? I have downloaded at least 100 games downloaded so far: including Pokemon Y, Alpha Sapphire, Tomodachi Life, Animal Crossing, Super Smash Bros, and Mario Party Island Tour; yet, I have around 150K blocks left which is around 20GB. Note that I have around 300 pictures, 20 songs from the Music Player, and at least 10 replays on SSB. Trust me; you aren't going to run out of space unless your purchase the entire Eshop.
Plus, they're extremely expensive. Just get a 32GB SD card, and you should be fine until the end of the gaming generation.

The New 3DS only takes Micro SD cards. It won't take a 32 GB SD card. Just a 32 GB micro SD card.
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

To counter pretty much everything above, go ahead and do it. I'm using a 128GB SDXC card for my 3DS, reformatted to FAT32 and it works great. 128GB was overkill though. 64GB would be enough for me. Currently, I have 28 full retail games, 12 virtual console, and 5 indies and it's using about 30GB of space. Certainly not the entire eShop. Not even 10% of it.
As for cost, it's pretty much a non-issue to anyone in the market for it. Anyone who buys enough games to make use of a 64GB card can afford a 64GB card. You can get a one from a good, trusted brand like Sandisk or Samsung for $30-40.
@fiendcodes I can only second what @Obito_Sigma said. Im also using a 32GB card and have more games than i could ever play and barely scratched the cards capacity.
Again, if youre not planning on purchasing the whole store, youre perfectly fine with a 32GB card. And even IF you should go on a purchase spree, you can always swap cards around.
And i highly doubt that it is possible to fill two 32GB cards...

Thanks for the advice everyone, and thanks for sharing your personal experience @CaviarMeths. My main interest in switching to a SDXC card is that my 32GB SDHC card is already almost full. Cost isn't an issue as I already own a 64GB MicroSDXC card. Besides, I own a PS Vita so SDXC cards are significantly more affordable; a 32GB memory card for a Vita costs $60 here and is far slower than SD cards.

You know what I mean... If you read the first line, you would see that I also made a mistake by typing "microSDXL."
@CaviarMeths@fiendcodes If you guys really fill up your 3DS SD cards that quickly, then geesh, you have a lot of spare time and money. That's the price for going full-digital. If you really have the money, then I suppose that you could go for it. However, remember that the 3DS wasn't deigned for SDXC cards. Be careful!

@Obito_Sigma Thanks, I'll keep an eye out and report back as it goes on. Thankfully the new 3DS XL has that wireless backup feature, which may help protect me. As far as filling up the 3DS, it's really just that I've had a 3DS since 2011 and switched to digital-only as soon as that was reasonable. It really adds up!
I found and bought two 128gb SDXC micro cards.
I will be using them in my NEW 3DS XL
I currently have the Gold 3DS XL with a 64Gb SDXC in it.
I have no problems with speed or bricked games/system.
I've been using it for over a year.
I've downloaded quite a lot of items.
I've got every Demo released, all the free videos downloaded, took a lot, and I mean A LOT of pictures. I have no music on it though.
I've got all my Free eshop games.
A lot of VC games
A lot of DSiWare
A lot of 3DS ware
and a bunch of 3DS retail games on it!
Can someone provide a link to the right memory card. I am looking on Amazon but I'm unsure what one would work best. I would like to get ether a 16gig or 32gig. Thanks and much appreciated.
