It asks you for a name if you're adding someone who hasn't added you yet, only as a placeholder. The name you put is not important, it will change to the correct one when the person adds yo back.
A few days ago a Neighbor ask for a Illuminated Heart. Here what it looks like:
I purposely delayed the opening ceremony since its only on during the night. I really like how the color stands out.
My save file data corrupted this morning. My town, and 40+ hours of gameplay, is down the drain.
I'm done for awhile, I think. -_-
I'm getting physical copies of my games from now on.

Any ideas of what could've caused it?
A few days ago I'd transferred my data to a new SD Card, so it is possible that it is a problem with the SD Card. That seems unlikely, though, as my other downloaded retail game (DKCR3D) and all of my other digital stuff loads OK.
I guess it's also possible I did something wrong when I was saving my game and turning off my system, but I always wait until the save is complete before turning off the system, so that also seems unlikely.
Most likely explanation is that stuff happens sometimes and I just happened to be one of the few people who has had this happen to them. What makes me mad, though is that Nintendo won't allow me to back-up my save data like I can with everything else I've downloaded. If DKCR3D corrupted, I'd be OK because I have a back-up of a working save file. Not so with AC:NL. -_-

Funny I invited some people to play and they chop off half of my trees I still didn't figure out who did !
Try not to invite people you can't trust 100%, and if you do, keep an eye on them! If they do something bad you can turn off the game before it saves.
@Ralizah: I think it may have something to do with moving the file around... I think, but I'm not completely sure. That sucks if we can't change SD cards because of this game.
Why don't you try loading the game from your old SD card?

Already deleted the data off my old SD Card.
To be safe, when I get the urge to play it again, I've deleted and am in the process of redownloading the game. In the meantime, I'll keep an eye on my other digital games for any more problems.
I might still have a back-up of my SD Card data on my PC. I wonder if that would work...

Sadly, there are some real jerks out there. Traded Nintendo items with another guy last night and he accidentally gave me his bike as we thought something odd happened where he didn't get what we initially traded... Lucky for him I wasn't one of those jerks as I could've easily gone off with his bike!

Just don't play this game in front of teenagers or "hardcore" gaming friends... they shall call you many female things, including a girl... for playing Animal Crossing...? I'm sorry, but this game is for real men who enjoy making patterns, tending their garden, talking to animals and making an epic house! Babies play FPS games!

Why should they call you things like that? The Villager is the most hardcore character ever. He finds a town populated by such creatures as gorillas, alligators and bears... and buys a house there. Not only that, he becomes their mayor and rules over them! He is the true king of the beasts!
And did I mention that ha CATCHES SHARKS WITH A FISHING ROD AND HOLDS THEM IN HIS BEAR HANDS?
Also, whale sharks weigh more than 20 tons. A villager can lift one with one hand without breaking a sweat.
