My GOTY is W101 without a doubt, and my handheld one would likely be pokemon, as FE made it seem like you were fighting with ghosts, you rarely saw any of your comrades again throughout the entire story.

Home console title goes to none other then Pikmin 3. Being my second favorite video game franchise it isn't that surprising, but nonetheless I've enjoyed it immensely.
For handheld, and a total out of nowhere hit is Pokemon Y. In barely over two months it surpassed the previous play time record of my favorite 3DS game Kid Icarus: Uprising, 272 hours. Pokemon Y is now beyond 300. No other franchise has captivated me as quickly as this one has when it comes to initial introduction. I can't get enough of it.
You lost me when you said Zelda has been in a slump the past few years
If Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks don't count as a slump, I don't know what does...and maybe it's just me, but I couldn't find anything to like about Skyward Sword, either. (and yes, I did go back to it, and my opinion of it has only soured more with each attempt)
@CanisWolfred Hey! You have a new profile picture Yea I agree, Zelda has definitely been in a slump. Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass, Skyward Sword etc are all decent games but really disappointing Zelda games and garbage compared to the likes of Link to the Past and the N64 titles. Link Between Worlds is a welcome return to form! What did you think of Link Between Worlds? Have you played it yet?
@CanisWolfred
I enjoyed both Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. No, they weren't the best in the series, but they were fresh and interesting. I know not many people agree with me on this, but I think Skyward Sword is on of the best games in the entire series.
@MeWario
I think calling the games garbage is pretty extreme.
It's not that extreme. I said they're all good games, which they are, but the gulf in quality between the best Zeldas and lesser Zeldas is extreme. I'm a painter and a pretty good one too but my paintings are garbage compared to the Mona Lisa's of the world
Rayman Legends by far. Those people saying they go back to animal crossing daily, the same happened to me and Rayman

This is gonna be rough, but stick with me here: what if Gunman Clive was the best game released for the 3DS this year? It's not the one that I spent the most time with, but it's the one that I've recommended the most times. It isn't graphically stunning in a technical way, but my 4 year old niece loves to watch me play it. Even if I only have a few minutes to play I can always knock out a stage or two and feel good about it. The music also randomly pops into my head and gets stuck there. Bite sized entertainment that almost feels like a tribute to the spirit of portable gaming in general. The game just lets you get it.

It will be the unpopular choice around here and I'm sure I'll get some heat for it but whatever... My Game of the Year is Grand Theft Auto V. The game had a ton of content, I liked the over the top characters and story, the colorful Los Santos setting that actually gave a bit of a Vice City vibe, much improved gameplay over GTA IV. And I just had a blast while playing. It's not perfect, shooting could still be upgraded for sure, but other than that I really had no complaints.
The four other games that round out my top 5 are The Last of Us, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Super Mario 3D World and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
@Stu13 Gunman Clive is a great game! Was just playing it yesterday and thinking about how I wish there were more games like it! It's cheap as, controls great and it's levels are well designed and perfectly bite sized. It's the kinda game I loved playing on my Gameboy as a kid and the world would be a better place if there were more games like it
@Gamer83 Grand Theft Auto V is amazing! Easily my number 2 game this year. It was such a good year for gaming personally and I have a top 10 list of my favourite games and struggled to pick a favourite.

That's not a bad choice, better than saying Lego city undercover lol.

I feel Fire Emblem: Awakening is my game of the year. Nintendo and IS managed to completely turn the series' fortunes around by doing everything right with this game. An easy difficulty and no permadeath so newcomers don't feel intimidated, An excellent cast of characters and character design, a great story, AMAZING music, and good DLC. I was actually able to train my characters all I wanted through EXPonential Growth so that no one outleveled anyone, adding balance to the game, and the game was one of the most visually appealing I have played on any handheld, especially WITH the 3D on. To anyone who has not yet bought this game, you need to go out there and get it now: this is easily one of the best games of 2013.
The only problem I have with the game is that the characters don't have feet

I didn't get to play the Wii U Lego City, because I don't have a Wii U yet, but I didn't play the 3DS release and, well, yeah, not too good. If the Wii U game is anything like that one, I probably won't buy it.
A couple of weeks ago I posted in a thread with this exact topic, and I said Awakening with the disclaimer that I hadn't played A Link Between Worlds.
Now that I've played the new Zelda, I can confidently say Fire Emblem: Awakening was easily my favorite game of the year.
What did you think of the new Zelda? Apart from liking Awakening more?
I think it's a fun, solid Zelda game, but I am a little surprised that's it at the top of so many GOTY lists. I'm psyched a 3DS game won, I just don't think it should be that one. But it is a Zelda game, and they are usually critically acclaimed no matter what. I like the weapon-borrowing mechanic that makes the game feel a bit more open and non-linear, but other than that there aren't a whole lot of changes to the formula (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). I've read a lot of people on this site call this the best Zelda ever, which just seems crazy to me. It's great, but a few of the home console versions are far superior to me.
I also don't like the top/down view we see in the older and handheld Zeldas; I much prefer 3D Zeldas. Yeah, this is in "3D" but it basically plays as a 2D game. Whenever I merge onto a wall and get a view of that world from that angle, it just makes me wish the entire game was from that perspective (except behind Link, of course). It would look and play so much better.
I'd still recommend the game to anyone, but Awakening is so much more rewarding and challenging, as well as replayable.
