I love my 3DS. As a portable game machine it is nearly perfect (needs a 2nd analog stick). When I saw that Nintendo was adding a Netflix app I got excited about the idea of being able to use my 3DS for more than just games, and give my smartphone a break. The clamshell design makes it a great desk companion, as opposed to a huge bulky laptop. If I want to use my phone for movie viewing I have to prop it up against something...
So a year and a half later I am disappointed. I never expected the eshop to be as robust as the Android store, but I did anticipate my expensive little guy to have some more basic online functions.
Here are my top 5 missing apps:
#5 - Skype.
Well it has a camera, albeit an ancient one, but if a ten year old webcam can still be used to Skype, then why not. I also remember reading the Skype developers wanted to be on DSi so...
#4 - Weather
The Wii came bundled with a weather app. It was pretty basic, but hey it Was better than nothing, and I think it was useful and fun.
#3 - News
The Wii had this one too. These two apps are more useful away from home so to have it on my TV, which is right next to my laptop, and not my portable device is puzzling...
#2 - YouTube
In 3D!? I mean come on...
#1 - eReader
I made this #1 because I just bought 100 Classic Books in the bargain bin. The 3DS can be held as a book and its actually quite comfortable. That game sadly doesn't let you read on any other way, though.
Anyone else agree, disagree? Have something you would add? Is Nintendo purposely trying to stay away from the 3DS being a swiss army knife, even though there are non games on the eShop? Or are developers of these apps just not interested in wasting money on Nintendo? Either way I would like to be able to utilize more the system that I paid 250 plus tax for....
I think it was rumoured a while ago that Ninty were developing an eReader app for Wii U and 3DS! I am hoping the news and weather apps make it to the 3DS as well!
3DS could use a GPS, maybe then it will be useful.

Out of those, YouTube is the likeliest, and even that's probably not going to happen. Reala's right - if anything, we need Netflix. I'd resubscribe in a flash if that came out over here.

Clever.. but not clever enough.
If the jury would look closer you will see there are SIX items!
All I really want is a video chat client and netflix.

I think Nintendo just focus on making it good at what it's supposed to do - play games.
There are phones that do everything else you could want them to - handheld gaming consoles dont need to do the same.
That said, it would be nice to see some of the apps suggested here; despite the fact that I'd just use my iPod Touch for any of them instead.

I'm not sure on the wisdom of Nintendo going about spending all the money on licensing and custom development to bring a bunch of functions to the 3DS that every other platform out there does better.

Because it's a requirement that the major gaming companies try and fail to be Apple.
