Initially I was going for the XL, waited out the year for it ... but the NA colours are so limited. (It might sound superficial, but if you're going to be spending some time with it, you might as well pick the colour that you like.) The silver looks good. If only that silver Zelda one was real. Actually, I like the overall design of the smaller one more, with the smaller rounded corners and more colours, but the larger screens on the XL would be great for apps like New Art Academy and the browser. So it's a mixed bag.
Good to know some people found the switch worth it though, if they roll out more colours on this side of the planet I might pick one up alongside its smaller sibling.

The fugly colors keep me at bay as well. I'm not shellin' out $200 on something that I don't think is pretty.
I'm with you guys on the color. I'm stilled peeved there isn't a white normal 3DS in NA. That is the one thing that could convince me to swap handhelds, because it is GORGEOUS.
To be honest, my blue XL looks 10000 times better in person than the pictures I found online, I was amazed by the blue outer shell when the store clerk got it out of the box.
And the black inside is completely functional, too.
What Morphtroid said, the XL has to be seen to be truly loved. It looks a lot better than what it does in the pictures and videos Nintendo put out. It really is a much better looking and feeling console overall, very well pleased with the XL.
i own a 3DS since launch and the only thing that really annoys me is the screen "scratching on the top screen. i need to get something to stop that but i havent found anything yet
am i the only one who absoloutly hates the design of the XL? xD
the colours look so terrible compared to my black 3DS or the white one here in europe. the XL looks like a device for grandmas. nothing against grandmas here
Yeah, maybe seeing a demo unit in person would help ... a little. The matte silver certainly shows up well in videos, so I'll keep a lookout for it, if it ever comes over here one day. I might take the red if there are really no other options (red/blue may be nice, it's just personal preference that the colours are too bright, too vibrant), but why settle for 3rd choice when you know there are other colours in other regions? Being picky on the details, maybe, guess it comes down to already having a 3DS that I'm happy with (for the most part, including colour), so at the moment I'm not as motivated to upsize.
One of the main reasons I was looking at the XL is New Art Academy, and the potential of a larger screen with it. (Kind of wished they kept the stylus pressure sensitivity from DS Lite.) Longer battery life would be a nice bonus, but that's about it. Almost there, just need a few more compelling excuses to take the dive.
Absolutely love my red 3DS XL, it truly is amazing. It just makes everything look so much better! I look at my original 3DS now and I can't believe I put up with those tiny screens for so long. The only thing I can fault the 3DS XL on is less portability and bad speakers. The battery lasts me much longer especially in sleep mode, I love the matte finish, the L/R buttons are improved, the hinge is sturdy, the screens don't scratch, the stylus is in a proper place, it's easier to hold, anti-glare screen is cool, etc. Well worth the upgrade!
All you spoiled rotten little gamers by your color choices! I remember back in the day there was one color and no one complained!
At first I thought it was about 50 50 on the like and dislikes. Now after a few days with it it truely is amazing the difference. The surround sound sounds amazing with certain games (mainly Nintendo ones). I've noticed that even on the highest brightness setting it doesn't compare well with the 3ds. I thinking they did that to help with the battery life! Marvel pinball is the one game where I noticed the brightness wasn't quite up to snuff. I went with the blue and until I had it in my hands I also thought it looks more like a toy then anything. Now it seems well put together and feels nice. The only thing I don't like about it now was the cheap stylus that came with it. Seems like a low budget 3 party one.

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.
Yeah, back in the day the screen had no colour either.
Watching the short segment of Kazuo Umezu playing with the XL and his excitement is a bit infectious, I like the possibilities of the new app with the new device.
The stylus I'm not too particular about, they've kept it around the same size/thickness and as long as it's still sturdy it's fine.
I'm thinking about an XL more and more now, after seeing it in the demo areas for the first time. My main concern, besides money of course, is the color selection. I think if they released a nice medium to dark green, a cobalt blue, or black, I would get it. The colors they have now look ugly IMO.
I agree the finish colors look better in person. The ergonomics, comfort, and screen size really make XL shine though! The extended battery life comes in real handy as well.
I'm loving my 3DS XL, I bought it with NSMB2 and I completed it during the week when it arrived. I recently bought Mario Kart 7 and that is absolutely brilliant, I agree with everyone about how great the screens look, but i'm disappointed about the sound, it should've been like the DSi XL, louder and clearer.
However, I'm annoyed that news of the Wii U are out now, I just spent $300 on the new XL and we get the news only a few weeks later? Arrrgh! I wish I could afford it, there's quite a few good games out on it that i'd like, but i'm not gonna be a launch day buyer unfortunately. I wish I could make a kickstarter for this....my dreams are already blown anyway, so I guess I'm gonna have to wait like I did with the Wii.

Lmao, tell me about it. Gamers in this day and age refusing to buy a console because of the limmited color choice? lol spoiled rotten & radical!
Not spoiled, just smart. History has shown that over time, more colors are released. Why should we buy one we don't like now, when there will likely be one we do released later? It has nothing to do with being spoiled.
