I think it may be an optical illusion created by the larger size of the system. Based on the measurements here, the XL is actually a tiny bit thicker than the original.
Just leaving this here for those who are uncertain if if the screen will scratch or not:
And here's another angle for the Red XL showing it's double colored style:
I personally find the form of the XL more visually appealing than the original and most of the present issues have been addressed, Bu I certainly hope that Nintendo would offer systems that are uniform in color much like the Japanese White XL or at the very least keep the top screen black.
It will not scratch the top screen because the screen hasn't that black glossy overlay that the original model has, that is the part that gets scratched, not the screen itself. If you see closely, the screen is actually a little bit further into the console, so the lower screen will not even be able to reach it this time.
Oh, and the holes at the bottom are obviously to attach things to the console. You can see it clearly on that image.
Also, why is everyone saying the colored ones are bad? I love them, the white one looks hideous imo. It looks like some kind of cheap toy that will get horrible stains with use.
At first I loved the idea of the metal teloscopic stylus, but from use having it for about a month now it's annoying to take out. Now it will be on the right, take it out with one quick swipe, put it back in. The only reason it was teloscopic was because they had no room to have it the regular size inside the 3DS hardware.
Any imperfections graphics-wise will be inherently more visible because of the larger screen and same resolution. Not to add the fact that there are less ppi. It shouldn't be too bad or noticeable, especially when the game is in motion.
i really like the fact that the power button seems to be properlly recessed now. I did have some accidental shutdowns in the middle of hectic Kid Icarus matches... very annoying!

Aside from the amazing & enormous screen upgrades, i really like the other changes NIntendo has made to the overall design as well. the speakers are now better, the stylus insert is now on the side(Can i get a big 'YAY' from subcon) instead of the akward Back position placement on the regular 3DS, the stylus itself is back to basics instead of the annoying useless teloscopic design of the original, There's no 3D LED light anymore for those of you who find it distracting, and the Start, Home and Select buttons i'm guessing will be clickier which is always a nice thing.
IGN also did their own smaller to larger screen size comparison 'thingy' to show how the games look. And on the larger XL screen there doesn't seem to be any sacrafice in quality, just a larger amazing image....But whatever, we'll have to wait for a hands-on preview to get a real sense of how it is.
Anyways! I guess I'm going to have to get over the Basic 'No Gloss/ No Sparkly Cake layered design" I'll still have my 2 other Aqua Blue 3DS's sitting on their glorified WaveBoy Sparkly Mermaid thrones. So when the time comes when i feel the need to get GIJOE & glossy i'll turn to the NINTENdark side and go back to the old jello 3DS mold if you know what i mean...SUP!
Here is a site that had hands on with the 3DS XL. They suspect that the system has clearer 3d graphics and is no longer a strain to the eyes due to a filter. Plus, they say the viewing angles are far superior. Sorry it's in Spanish. http://www.p-nintendo.com/articles/reportages/exclu-pn-...
