Welcome to page two! If you're still here, we're impressed, and a little bit proud. Let's continue the fun with some more rankings!

Twilight Princess remains a favourite for some

The Guardian - Keza MacDonald, 2021

Published for the first time just last week, The Guardian's ranking of Zelda games is the most recent one we've found. Most sites have had theirs up for a while - some have even neglected to update them post-Breath of the Wild. Let's see what Keza thinks is the best Zelda.

  1. Breath of the Wild
  2. Majora's Mask
  3. Ocarina of Time
  4. A Link To The Past
  5. Wind Waker
  6. A Link Between Worlds
  7. Twilight Princess
  8. Oracle of Ages/Seasons
  9. Link's Awakening
  10. The Legend of Zelda

Another list similar to WaPo and Kotaku, eschewing many of the modern games in favour of the retro Zeldas. Breath of the Wild is still at number one, of course - but partly because it recreates the feeling of original Zeldas, with Keza calling it "the ultimate expression of what Zelda has always been about." However, Keza puts Phantom Hourglass at number 15, a crime for which there can be no forgiveness.

We give this list 7.5/10. We're running out of reasons, to be honest. These scores are pretty arbitrary.

According to the scores, Skyward Sword is an all-time great

Metacritic - Fox Van Allen, 2017

This one is a little unusual, as it's from Metacritic, the site which aggregates game scores from a bunch of different publications and totals up an average. Games can make it or break it based on their Metacritic score, and there have even been tales of companies withholding bonuses unless a game hits a certain number, which is pretty heinous. Metacritic's ranking is therefore based on the average of scores, and not on any one person's opinion - which, coincidentally, is what we're trying to do here.

  1. Ocarina of Time
  2. Breath of the Wild
  3. Wind Waker
  4. Twilight Princess
  5. Majora's Mask
  6. Link to the Past (GBA)
  7. Skyward Sword
  8. Link to the Past (SNES)
  9. Oracle of Ages/Seasons
  10. A Link Between Worlds

Two versions of Link to the Past make it into Metacritic's top ten, and both Oracle games. It's quite interesting to see Metacritic's list, defined as it is by score, because it helps us remember that all of these games were critically adored at the time. Yes, even Skyward Sword. Reviewing Zelda games is hard, because you're always blown away while playing, and it's only over the next few years that the general opinion becomes a little more cemented.

A good list, overall. We have to give this a 9/10, not necessarily because it's 90% accurate, but because it's the most scientific so far. Good job, Metacritic.

Link to the Past: the best Zelda of all time?

IGN - "IGN's Zelda Fanatics", 2017

Although it's not entirely clear who the Zelda fanatics are, it's safe to assume this is another team effort. Let's hope they're fanatic about being correct.

  1. Link to the Past
  2. Ocarina of Time
  3. Wind Waker
  4. Majora's Mask
  5. Link's Awakening
  6. The Legend of Zelda
  7. A Link Between Worlds
  8. Twilight Princess
  9. Minish Cap
  10. Oracle of Ages/Seasons

A pretty tight list, no real upsets, except for the omission of Breath of the Wild. This piece was updated last in May of 2017 - several months after BOTW's release - and the entry for The Legend of Zelda even mentions Breath of the Wild. So, what gives, IGN?

We're going to have to give this one a 7/10, because Breath of the Wild really should be in there.

A Link Between Worlds nestles next to Link to the Past in GameSpot's list

GameSpot - GameSpot Staff, 2016*

This one is an interesting one. Firstly, because it's a top 5 from a bunch of different staff members, which we added up and averaged to get a top ten. Secondly, because it features our very own Kate Gray (who is writing this right now, and does not remember making this top 5. Also, not sure if she agrees with... her past self). Thirdly, it's another pre-BOTW list, so bear that in mind once more.

  1. Majora's Mask
  2. Ocarina of Time
  3. Wind Waker
  4. Link to the Past
  5. A Link Between Worlds
  6. Twilight Princess
  7. Link's Awakening
  8. Minish Cap
  9. The Legend of Zelda
  10. Skyward Sword

Majora's Mask wins it, after a slightly complicated averaging process. Also, for the record, Kate's ranking was Majora’s Mask, A Link Between Worlds, Ocarina of Time, Minish Cap, and Phantom Hourglass.

GameSpot gets a 8.5/10. Kate gets a 8/10 for ranking ALBW a little too highly.

Skyward Sword gets more love from Famitsu

Famitsu - Famitsu Staff, N/A

We wanted to include Famitsu in this list, but since they don't have an official Zelda ranking, we've just gone ahead and used their scores for the individual Zelda games. As a result, most of them share the honour of first or second place. Four Zelda games so far have received Famitsu's perfect 40/40 score.

  1. Breath of the Wild / Ocarina of Time / Skyward Sword / Wind Waker
  2. Link to the Past / Phantom Hourglass
  3. Twilight Princess / A Link Between Worlds
  4. Spirit Tracks / Majora's Mask

Hmmm. This list is pretty wonky. We love Skyward Sword, but it's definitely not a 40/40 game - and Phantom Hourglass grabbing second place is a surprising turn of events.

This list gets a 6.5/10. It's just too darn wonky!

Link's Awakening ranks highly for Zelda Dungeon

Zelda Dungeon - ZD Staff, 2020

This one's got to be good, right? It's got Zelda right there in the name. Zelda Dungeon rewrites their list every single year, meaning that their chart can actually tell you if a game climbed or fell in their staff's opinions over the past 12 months.

  1. Ocarina of Time
  2. Breath of the Wild
  3. Twilight Princess
  4. Link's Awakening
  5. Majora's Mask
  6. A Link Between Worlds
  7. Link to the Past
  8. Link's Awakening
  9. Skyward Sword
  10. Minish Cap

The most interesting tidbit here is that, out of Zelda Dungeon's 30 editors, six of them have never played Link to the Past. We're wondering how they even got the job. Then again, some of us have some rather large holes in our Nintendo game knowledge, so we probably shouldn't question that too much, lest we lose our own jobs.

This list gets a 9/10. It's pretty good - and quite similar to Nintendo Life's, too!

OOT2
Ocarina wins again!

ScreenRant - Emily Brett, 2020

ScreenRant has two separate lists of Best 3D Zeldas and Best 2D Zeldas, and we were tearing our hair out trying to figure out how to combine the two, but it turns out they do actually have a Best Zelda Games list - it's just a bit hard to find.

  1. Ocarina of Time
  2. Breath of the Wild
  3. Oracle of Ages
  4. Twilight Princess
  5. Wind Waker
  6. Majora's Mask
  7. Skyward Sword
  8. A Link Between Worlds
  9. Link's Awakening
  10. Minish Cap

Wow, ScreenRant. You're the only site not to include Link to the Past in your list. What does it mean? Did you get LTTP and Oracle of Ages mixed up? Maybe they just really liked the time travel harp?

This one gets a 6/10 because, come on, no Link to the Past?

ALBW2
A Link Between Worlds gets a surprising amount of love from GamesRadar

GamesRadar - David Roberts & Sam Loveridge, 2018

Before we get stuck in to GamesRadar's list, let's just take a moment to appreciate that they think Ezlo - the birdhat from Minish Cap - is "one of our favourite side characters in the series". We like to think that Ezlo is the kind of hat we'd keep in a padlocked box in a cupboard, but each to their own.

  1. Breath of the Wild
  2. A Link Between Worlds
  3. Link to the Past
  4. Link's Awakening
  5. Wind Waker
  6. Majora's Mask
  7. Ocarina of Time
  8. Minish Cap
  9. Twilight Princess
  10. Skyward Sword

You know, it's interesting that none of these lists are the same. Just goes to show how Zelda games are not always universally adored or hated. GR's list ranks ALBW quite highly, even higher than Link to the Past, which is surprising. A pretty solid list, overall.

8/10 for GamesRadar. The N64 versions deserve better than that, surely!
