Ryan can list the first 151 Pokémon all in order off by heart – a feat he calls his ‘party trick’ despite being the biggest introvert we know.

Ever since I first discovered the magic of Pokémon Red & Blue and Nintendo's Game Boy Color at the age of six, gaming has been an ever-present factor in my life. It will forever be one of my favourite hobbies.

Expertise

Ryan’s first ever console was a Game Boy Color, which was swiftly followed by a Nintendo 64! Since then he’s owned pretty much every console Nintendo has ever released, as well as every Sony PlayStation from the PS1 to the PS5.

His favourite console of all-time is the Nintendo 64 - not necessarily because it’s the best, but because of the nostalgia triggered by the console and its library of games. The N64 was the first home console he owned, and playing games on it with his Mum and spending every waking moment thinking about / talking about Pokémon was the happiest he’s ever been!

Picking a favourite genre is difficult because I usually need quite a mix of different experiences and to jump from one genre to another to keep things fresh. There's something about platformers, though – 2D, 3D, whatever it is, they're easy to understand and very hard to put down.

Ryan’s Favourite Games

Pokémon Red, Blue & Yellow (Game Boy):

OK, so I'm cheating a bit with this first one, but these almost identical games were what kicked off a lifetime of gaming for me. From a technical point of view, they're definitely not the best the industry has to offer, but they meant everything to me as a kid and you can't really ask for more than that.

Pokémon Snap (Nintendo 64):

This one's also largely in my top three thanks to nostalgia, but even today I find it so satisfying to play through a game that can be completed within a handful of hours on a lazy Sunday afternoon. I'm quite into photography and like to pretend I'm good at it – I think the passion probably started here!

Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock (Wii, PS2, Xbox 360):

My final choice is a bit left-field, but my love for Guitar Hero 3 largely comes down to the fact that it was one of a couple of major factors that influenced me to play real guitar – and in turn, make my own music. I can't imagine life now without being so into music and writing and recording my own stuff, and maybe that wouldn’t have happened if I hadn't spent the entirety of 2008 rocking out in my living room with Guitar Hero's plastic controller.

From the Archive

We asked Ryan to pick out his three favourite pieces of work from across his personal archive, and tell us why he picked them!

Feature: Game Of The Decade Staff Picks - Pokémon GO

My time as a writer on Nintendo Life was almost exclusively news-focused, so opportunities to write more personal pieces were rare. I knew this GotD decision would be controversial, but I didn't care – it was fun to write and I'm glad that we put it out.

One Month Later, Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ Review-Bombing Is Only Getting Worse

Purely for the wild attention it received. New Horizons was a huge event, and this story blew up, achieving page view numbers I'd never experienced in such a short space of time and appearing all over social media sites, YouTube videos, and more. It was bizarre but thrilling seeing my headline and byline be talked about and screenshotted all over the place for a few weeks.

Super Mario Odyssey Power Moon Locations And Walkthrough

Creating a guide campaign for any game is an absolute slog, and this was my first experience of doing so. It's definitely not the best way to enjoy a game, and the amount of work needed is frankly ridiculous, but the sense of achievement having finished a guide like this isn't really matched by creating any other article type.

  • Review Tumblestone (Switch eShop)

    Time to rock n’ roll!

The puzzle genre can be very hit-and-miss, particularly on dedicated gaming consoles where players tend to expect a higher level of polish and quality than most mobile games are able to achieve. Tumblestone, on the surface, looks like your typical ‘match-three’ kind of puzzler and might struggle to stand out from the...

  • Review Stardew Valley (Switch eShop)

    Star of the show

Stardew Valley is a universally acclaimed farming simulator that was initially released on PC in February 2016, before eventually arriving on other consoles later that year. The last few months have seen little other than pure hype and excitement from Switch players, however, as they finally get to see this Harvest Moon-inspired...

  • Review Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime (Switch eShop)

    Lovely stuff

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is a multiplayer experience that finds itself sitting somewhere between the action and party genres. Developed by Toronto-based indie studio Asteroid Base, the game has received a lot of love and attention across its PC and other console releases with its use of colour, imagination, and pure fun often...

  • Review Physical Contact: Picture Place (Switch eShop)

    Sudoku and demons?

Physical Contact: Picture Place is the third entry in a series of games from publisher, Collavier Corporation. It is also a completely unnecessarily long and misleading name for a game that is effectively just a collection of Sudoku puzzles. We haven’t been having much joy with the first two games in the series so far (Physical...

  • Review Tower of Babel (Switch eShop)

    Ups and downs

Not a great deal has been said about Tower of Babel; the game seems to have found its way onto the Switch’s eShop without anyone noticing where it came from. There isn’t even the slightest mention of the game on the official website or Twitter feed of its publisher, EnjoyUp Games, which is very odd indeed. EnjoyUp published...

  • Review Binaries (Switch eShop)

    Two characters, one control stick

Binaries has arrived on the Nintendo Switch eShop, adding another puzzle game to an ever-growing - and high-quality - list of games in the genre. In some ways Binaries is incredibly similar to Semispheres (a fun little puzzler released on the eShop not too long ago), yet at the same time is the exact opposite...

  • Review INVERSUS Deluxe (Switch eShop)

What’s black and white and dead all over?

Solely created by developer Ryan Juckett (previously of Bungie), INVERSUS Deluxe is a frantic shooter that asks you to manipulate the surroundings to your advantage in order to defeat your opponents. This ‘Deluxe’ version of the game contains a bucket-load of new content over the original release and...

  • Review BUTCHER (Switch eShop)

    DOOM's younger cousin

The news that DOOM is on its way to the Switch will have no doubt excited many Nintendo players who never had the chance to play the game when it was initially released last year. We still have some time to kill until it arrives, however, and luckily Crunching Koalas has brought the “DOOM-inspired” game BUTCHER to the...

  • Review Pokémon Gold And Silver (3DS eShop / GBC)

    Golden oldies

Pokémon Gold and Silver are the second generation instalments in the Pokémon series; released at the turn of the millennium, the games arrived just a few short years after their predecessors, Pokémon Red and Blue. Boasting a whole new world to explore, 100 new monsters (bringing the total to 251), and an entirely new cast of...

  • Review Beach Buggy Racing (Switch eShop)

Giving Mario Kart a run for its money?

Releasing a kart-racer on a console that already has the likes of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe spear-heading its software library is an interesting move; Mario Kart is a series widely accepted to be as close to perfection as we’re likely to see, so what is left for other titles to offer? Beach Buggy Racing (a title...

  • Review Semispheres (Switch eShop)

Two thumbs are better than one

Semispheres is the sort of game that in recent years would have likely skipped Nintendo consoles, instead finding its home elsewhere; platforms where quirky indie games, bursting with unique ideas and an overly “artsy” feel, would thrive. As it so happens, the game was originally released on PlayStation and Steam...

  • Review 36 Fragments of Midnight (Switch eShop)

A (very) quick stroll in the moonlight

The Nintendo eShop is a weird and wonderful place; some games are absolute gems, some are whatever-the-opposite-of-gems-is, and some leave you with more questions after completion than when you first started. 36 Fragments of Midnight falls into that latter category and, whilst it might work successfully if...

  • Guide Pokémon GO Raids, Bosses, Rewards And Winning Tactics

    Playing with the big boys

Niantic’s Pocket Monster-catching phenomenon is an ever-changing and adapting beast; regular updates and additions to the game have made Pokémon GO a much-loved but potentially confusing experience. The recently added ‘Raid Battles’ are one element that may well cause some confusion to new players and veterans alike...

  • Review Severed (Switch eShop)

    Gain the upper hand

From Canadian developer DrinkBox Studios – the creative force behind Metroidvania brawler, Guacamelee – comes Severed, an action-adventure game with RPG elements, real-time combat and a whole lot of slicing the body parts from various creatures onto the floor. The game was initially released on PlayStation Vita back in April...

  • Review Phantom Trigger (Switch eShop)

    Hack, slash, repeat...

Phantom Trigger is a self-described “neon slasher” featuring RPG and roguelike elements developed by two-man squad, Bread Team. Combining some rather tough gameplay with an intriguing storyline, it sees you make your way through various monster-ridden, dungeon-like worlds, whilst also attempting to make sense of what is...

  • Review Kid Tripp (3DS eShop)

    Have a nice trip

Originally available on iOS platforms, Kid Tripp has ran, jumped and smashed its way onto the Nintendo 3DS eShop. We’ve been following the progress of its port for a while now at Nintendo Life and can safely say that the tean behind this auto-runner have done an excellent job - giving us another reason to stop our 3DS consoles...

  • Review De Mambo (Switch eShop)

    Mambo No. 1?

De Mambo is probably as “indie” as an indie title can get. The game was created by The Dangerous Kitchen, a team of just three animation graduates who decided to learn how to code and use the luxury of a Premier Inn as their office space. After what we’re sure was a tough but enjoyable journey, De Mambo was born – a fighting...

  • Review Bulb Boy (Switch eShop)

    A playground of poop

Bulb Boy is a point-and-click adventure horror game, following the story of our titular hero as he wakes from a nightmare to discover that his house has been taken over by evil. Using a mixture of puzzle solving, exploration and Bulb Boy’s unique abilities (having a light bulb for a head is surprisingly handy it turns out),...

  • Review GoNNER (Switch eShop)

    Dead. Dead. Oh, dead again.

Having been released on PC and Mac in October last year GoNNER now sees its console debut on Nintendo Switch, brought to us by publisher Raw Fury Games and developer Art in Heart. Generally loved by players and critics alike in its original guise GoNNER is a roguelike platformer, consisting of ever-changing,...

  • Review Dark Witch Music Episode: Rudymical (Switch eShop)

    An abundance of Boing-Boings

Originally developed for iOS and Android devices, Dark Witch Music Episode: Rudymical is a spin-off from The Legend of Dark Witch series that was playable on Nintendo 3DS. In a complete detour from the two previous titles – The Legend of Dark Witch and The Legend of Dark Witch - Episode 2: The Price of Desire ??

  • Review Vroom in the Night Sky (Switch eShop)

    Or don't...

The Nintendo Switch game library is off to a very highly-praised start – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been making almost every man/woman/cat alive positively burst with glee and we've been loving games such as Snipperclips and Fast RMX here at Nintendo Life HQ. But unfortunately amongst the gems there have to be some...

  • Review VOEZ (Switch eShop)

    The first handheld-only Switch game

Tucked away in the Nintendo Switch eShop, underneath the games that everyone is talking about such as Snipperclips, 1-2-Switch and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (obviously), is VOEZ, a rhythm game originally released on iOS and Android device

  • Review Just Dance 2017 (Switch)

Unfortunately Will Smith’s “Switch” does not make an appearance

People all over the world have finally got their hands on the Nintendo Switch, and with a relatively generous supply of games supplied at launch when including Nintendo eShop offerings, choices on which software to buy must be made. One of these launch day titles is a port of last...

The titular character Dandara must jump from surface to surface, fighting enemies whilst travelling through a gravity-bending world...
