What was the best part of the Splatoon 3 Nintendo Direct yesterday? The Splatfests? The card game? The locker room? Unsurprisingly, it seems to be Deep Cut, the game's new musical hosts. They're turning out to be a big hit despite replacing the Squid Sisters, but one particular member from this trio has stolen the internet's hearts
Joining the Octoling Shiver and Inkling Frye is one very big manta ray — Big Man. We've never seen anyone happier to just exist, really. Big Man is a manta of few words; it seems the only word he can say is "ay" which is actually a stand-in for every single word imaginable because we then get a translation of what he's truly conveying.
As one of the game's three 'idols', Big Man will be stepping up every Splatfest to represent one of the three teams. For the first one, coming 27th August, he's representing 'scissors', which he says are "complicated" and "work your mind". We suppose not having hands doesn't help, there!
Look, we love him, okay? And it seems like pretty much everyone else does too going by Twitter. As soon as the big manta ray was revealed during yesterday's Direct, people flocked to social media to share their thoughts on the newest addition to the game
Big Man has proved so popular, that he's even become part of a Twitter trend where fans of something throw the word 'sweep' onto the end of a hashtag to try and get something trending. #BIGMANSWEEP it is, then.
But Big Man hasn't just won a legion of fans on his debut, but he's also getting a fairly big fan art following. We don't blame people — he's just a big, happy manta ray, and we all need a bit more of that in our lives.

These are just some of our favourite reactions and pieces of fanart of Big Man, and we're sure we'll see plenty of it in the coming months and years.
Splatoon 3 is out on 9th September, but you'll be able to see Big Man in the game as early as 27th August when the Splatfest World Premier hits.

Can anybody please tell me what he‘s wearing on his head? Looks like a Mario towel to me.
I’m loving the big man and I’m sure he will be a popular additional mascot.
Also, Splatoon 3 has a lot more upgrades over 2 than I was expecting. Totally justified new game and I don’t know why people were doubting that.
Why can't he be an amiibo at launch?
I love him so much
Even looking past the brilliant memes spawned from him, he's without a doubt the most refreshing idol we've ever had: male, as wide as the Great Wall of China and not even a Inkling or Octoling. I was going to pick Scissors for the upcoming Splatfest anyway but Big Man being the heralder for that side pushed me over the edge, he's absolutely fantastic. Or should I say: manta-stic?

......I'll see myself out.
I actually laughed out loud when Big Man revealed himself in combination with the air horn. That was good stuff!
(There’s another big man in Splatoon 3 though: Murch)
Big Man for Smash Bros!
It's all about Shiver for me, wheres my Shiver fans?
Big Man's got his Big Fans, Frye's got the forehead memes, what does Shiver have?
I read this early in the morning and at first I read it as "Big Mom", my mind immediately thought "What's this One Piece crossover and how did I miss it?"
@stinky_t Right here. I love her traditional Japanese aesthetic. And it looks like Frye may have some sort of Middle Eastern or Indian aesthetic going on, which is pretty neat, too.
I look upon the magnificence of Big Man, whose beauty makes the brightest stars dull by comparison.
Big man Amiibo now!
Big Man is love, Big Man is life! Ay!
big man is the coolest
He is loving it.
I mean, it makes sense. Big Man is the outlier character to the standard expectations of the idols in Splatoon.
The last two games had duo Squid Gals each time, it'd make sense to EXPECT that again. You're not going to blow up over expected.
Remember, Marina also blew up for being an Octoling.
For good reason. Big Man is Best Man!
It's funny how the first male idol isn't even an Inkling or an Octoling but an anthropomorphic fish. It still makes Deep Cut really unique. I actually like that anthropomorphic fish are playing more roles, whether it's Big Man or the Staff that seem to run Turf War all of a sudden.
Frye is my favorite personally but all three characters look cool.
@Kirbo100 Shiver's got the best fans
@Royalblues Why would he automatically win? Popularity isn't always the way to win. If you remember Splatoon 2, the way to game the system at one point was to vote for the team that was clearly going to be less popular.
@Royalblues I remember in the early days there was a massive anti-Pearl crowd based on people not liking her. There was also a lot of people who automatically preferred Marina based on her looks. For me I usually just went with whichever answer felt best for me, or if I didn't have an opinion, I went with whichever team a lot of my friends were going on.
