Sonic the Hedgehog 2 opened in Europe, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand over the weekend, topping the charts and grossing $25.5 million over 31 markets. When compared with the original 2020 movie, the sequel's performance is tracking 2% higher, and Paramount Pictures is said to be "delighted" with the results.
The movie is not due to release in the US until this coming weekend, but saw strong performances in key areas such as the UK ($6.4M/651 locations), France ($5.7M/675), Australia ($2.8M/289), Spain ($2.2M/339) and Germany ($2.1M/553). Sweden, Czech Republic, Austria, Norway, Belgium, New Zealand, Slovakia and South Africa all also saw No. 1 starts.
It's no surprise Paramount is so pleased with the performance. Sonic the Hedgehog 2's movie producer recently spoke of creating a Sonic Cinematic Universe, and it looks like this is already underway with the announcement of not only a third movie, but also a live-action Knuckles spin-off series. Whether Jim Carrey will reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik is currently up in the air, however, with the actor recently stating his intention to retire from his acting career.

It's a fun film. Probably just a messy kids' film if you don't know or care about Sonic. But fans will probably like it. I think it works because there's a real earnestness to it - Ben Shwartz, in particular, gives Sonic a youthful fragility that really makes me like this version.
I'll avoid spoilers but I have worries about the future of the series. It seems like it's going to move into material from the later games, which, for me, were not as good or as interesting.
When Sonic 2 movie will be released in Indonesia 🇮🇩 ?
I heard the schedule for Indonesia was in August 2022, not 8 April 2022 (on this week).
I saw it, I liked it. Nothing truly outstanding but definitely worth a watch. Jim Carrey is the best actor they could've hired for Robotnic too, his performance is amazing.
Even though I didn't like it as much as the first, I'm glad it's doing better. Pretty much guarantees a third film.
@Anti-Matter According to IMDB, it releases 6th April in Indonesia.
Yeap I love it, it's better than I expected. For the third film though they'll probably get into the Sonic Adventure era aspect of the series. If they hadn't kept Sonic in his world for the time being they probably won't be able to in future sequels cause future Sonic games focus more on the boring realistic world that Sonic got into instead of the more unique fantasy world his past games created so yeah I guess we got rob of ever seeing Sonic's unique worlds in the cinema.
@ImagineerNik
Oh, thanks. 😀
I will check out my local cinema.
We went to see it at the weekend, pretty enjoyable, and there was plenty of people in the cinema.
@Xiovanni my only problem with watching movies at home is that 90% of the time I fall asleep. But much better food at home other than popcorn.
Guess the first movie wasn't just a fluke after all...
Saw this coming a mile away. They already addressed the problem of getting rid of the hideous original design style, they got Jim Carrey who is perfect for the role, and Sonic is still a popular brand.
@Splodge It’s the first film in a long time where what happens in the third act actually met my expectations. I’m one of those “why didn’t the hero just do that?” people who spoils his own enjoyment of things far too often by overthinking.
As soon as Knuckles mentioned ‘whoever holds the Master Emerald gains godly powers’ or words to that effect it was fairly obvious where the film was going but I’ve been burned so many times it was so satisfying to see it actually happen.
@Specter_of-the_OLED Yeah, I’d be 100 times more interested in these films if they took place in the colorful worlds of the first few games.
I saw the movie on Friday, and despite its flaws it is definitely better than the first movie, especially the last 30 or so minutes
Saw it yesterday, absolutely loved it. As others have said, if you don't care about Sonic characters/games, it's a pretty ambitious, decent but unremarkable kids' film. But as a Sonic fan, it's elevated far beyond that. My only gripes were a couple of weirdly placed fart jokes (those were in the first film too. I'm not a prude, just don't find them funny, and I don't remember that being a part of Sonic's character in previous forms) and the dancing and wedding scenes were a little too long. But thats at max 8 minutes that I would skip past on a rewatch, and around 2 hours of really cool film.
I loved how Tails and Knuckles were portrayed, and Carey's Robotnik was far more unhinged than in the first, which was fun. Though I liked the first film, my biggest problem was how most of the film was set in "non videogame" situations and there was more time dedicated to the human characters and real world settings. Thats not a problem here, and to me that makes it 10 times more enjoyable. 😁
I recognize Sonic as a Video Game Legend but I just never could truly care much for the games. I've played several of them and have enjoyed them to an extent but I just don't really care too much for the gameplay aspect of them.
Myself, my wife and the kids loved the first movie, I'm sure we will enjoy this and are looking forward to when we can preorder it on Vudu where we bought the first one.
I agree with others, I'd like to see them go to Sonics world.
